Rune Tzorfeld
Location: A warzone
Feeling: Nervous, rushed, trying to get stuff done without getting killed

The world was a blend of shadows. Wispy clouds hung in the air, obscuring the stars and painting the night a textured kind of darkness, dropping the smallest drifts of snow tumbling to the heavier, more loaded blackness of the forest below. The snow danced in the wind, melting upon contact with any of the collections of shades in the forest, from the darkness that hid between the leaves, the shadows thrown upon the ground, to the muddy soil underfoot that was essentially black. The forest was almost deathly still, most forms of wildlife having been chased away by the noise and battle. If any human foolish enough to be here stretched their arm out into the dark, they might not have been able to see their fingertips.

Of course, that might be a blessing. Despite the stillness, there was still life in these woods, but they weren't especially friendly, eyeing each other carefully for weakness as they waited for their chance to strike. The armies fighting nearby were made of humans, and as strong as these creatures were, being able to see them wouldn't help the soldiers put up much of a fight. Best to travel in a group, think of the the sounds as harmless deer and birds, and to hope that the creatures watching you weren't hungry.

A snowflake managed to dodge the leaves, twirling as it fell slowly. Without a sound, a hooded shadow on a leggy mare broke out from the pool of darkness thrown by one of the trees, coming closer and stretching out a hand. There was a pinprick of ice upon contact, then a water droplet sat in Rune's palm, before she wiped it off against her breeches. The creatures watched curiously at the duo, their attention making the mare snort nervously, but the rider ignored them. When one of them stepped forward, however, the rider turned, the glowing amber gaze under the hood stopping it's movements.

Taking the reins once more, Rune squeezed gently, her mare dancing forward. She could feel the mare growing more panicked through their bond, all but ready to bolt, and she sent an emotion of calm towards it as she patted it's neck. It was not all that strong a link, connecting them enough to steady it but not enough that her mare's panic would overwhelm her, or for her own anxious energy to add to the mare.

This had been a surprise assignment, which was quickly growing to be the Church's usual from Rune's scant few years of experience, much to her own distaste. She'd just been relaxing at an inn a few days after a completed assignment when they gave her the message, and she couldn't help but feel like she couldn't catch a break.

Details didn't seem to be a strong point of the Church, either-the assignment only spoke of joining a warfront in the north and bringing an end to a war being fought there, with no real mention of what they were fighting for, how long they'd been fighting for, or even how exactly she was supposed to just 'bring it to an end'. Never mind that she'd only ever really heard of wars on the lips of gossiping women and disillusioned men, nor the fact that she'd been sent on small missions so far, tasks of espionage and diplomatic shows of force where she simply had to turn and sit there. When the Church had first spoken of assigning her jobs, she'd been worried that they would send her out to battlegrounds immediately, where she'd end up killing as many friends as foes with her bulk alone, but when the situation had differed, she'd allowed herself to relax. She'd even found herself wondering if the Lunarch was nicer than he'd let on, actually respecting her preferences. But of course not. They were simply keeping her as an ace up their sleeve, and it was now time to play their trump card.

The only other thing they'd told her was that Elwin, a more experienced dragon rider, would be there, which didn't really reassure her as much as they assumed it would. It did help that there would be someone else she could look to, but whilst Rune had heard of other dragon riders, she'd only met Calypso so far, and hadn't really been keeping track of who anyone was. Was she supposed to know who he was? Conversely, had he been keeping tabs on her?

Rune didn't think she'd attracted any attention, but if the church had told him she was a mutant-or from their words, gifted with the power of a dragon- that would have been reason enough for her name to stick. She didn't think they would have, but the church was always surprising her, and Rune had long resolved to try not to assume anything of them. Her dragon form had attracted plenty of attention, the Church boasting of the new, absolutely huge dragon that they had tamed with the help of Avacyn, but the fact that she was a human, or what the dragon's 'rider' looked like had never been uncovered, which really helped with all the stealth missions she'd been on. Would the other demand an explanation? Or would the emblem of the golden dragon be enough for him to leave the matter as it was?

But the trees were thinning, and Rune concentrated, pulling her aura over her and her mare. She'd found that there was a way to manipulate the dragon's aura somehow, during her years travelling. When she concentrated and put force behind it, it seemed to intensify, filling everyone near her with a vague sense of intimidation and fear. But when she focused on pulling it around her, as if an extension of a cloak, it worked almost in the opposite way, people seemed almost unable to concentrate on her, their eyes sliding over her as if she was a part of the scenery. Trotting past the guards that stood at the wall, Rune stuck to the shadows, knowing it wasn't foolproof, but also admiring how alert they still seemed to be. It looked like the general knew what they were doing and was able to get their orders carried out, at least.

Walking the mare to the horse post, she untacked her, running a quick brush over her coat and letting her take a drink. "Thanks for the help." She whispered softly, placing her forehead on the mare's neck and sharing her feelings of warmth and gratefulness with the mare, who nudged her affectionately. That done, she took a step back, taking a breath before walking away. Once she got far enough, people would start noticing the mare and taking care of her. It was a war, after all. No one would question the gift of another horse.

It was currently a rest period, the air unmoving, but with an anxious charge in it. She'd timed it as much, not wanting to appear on the battlefield when both the armies didn't know if she was friend or foe.

As much as she questioned the Church's decisions, she vaguely understood why they wanted an end to the war. Even without the snow as a hint, when she breathed in, the air was crisp and cold. Winter was fast approaching, and if the war lingered into the cold there would be an even bigger strain on the grain, clothes and resources needed. In fact, Rune had a vague feeling that she wasn't especially prepared either. Whilst the hood and her leather coverings worked well both in battle and the cold, giving her around 3 layers in this cold weather, her hands were uncovered, and should probably be turning blue. However, it seemed the dragon's powers were helping there too.

But, what now? She'd chosen to appear in the middle of the night for safety, but even generals would be asleep at this point, wouldn't they? Pursing her lips in thought, Rune suddenly saw someone in one of the more central tents leave their quarters hastily, fully clothed. Shrugging, she followed. It was more of a lead than anything else, and she had snuck in especially because she hadn't wanted to deal with all the soldiers guarding the area. She followed him to a lit tent nearer the center of the encampment, dimly surprised at how the person in there seemed to be awake.

He opened the tent, and Rune had tilted her head slightly, aiming for a quick look. However, her eyes locked with telltale red ones that pierced through her cloaking, the gaze too intense to be any kind of an accident. Blinking in surprise, Rune only just stopped herself from taking a step back. Whilst she didn't know what the creatures in the forest were, and she'd only heard of the one before her in tales, she'd grown up in Presh, and knew exactly what was standing before her.

Vampire.

The dragon in her stood straighter, bristling at the challenge of the eye contact, whilst the human in her fought the urge to drop to a knee. Unlike the humans outside of Stensia, who viewed vampires as a thing of myth, something unholy or intimidating, Rune had been taught that vampires were very real, and were the masters of the humans, something best submitted to if you wanted to keep your life.

But she was a dragon rider now. What did that mean status wise?

Not sure which of her impulses to follow but very much not wanting to get into a fight on friendly territory, Rune settled for a mix of all of them. She dissipated her aura, ignoring the surprise of the man she tailed, awkwardly dipping her body in a bow before straightening herself back up. Grasping the emblem in her pocket, she quickly lifted it up before him, letting the golden dragon speak for her and identify her as a rider before putting it back. Did he know she was sent here? Other dragon riders wore their emblems on their hoods, but she never really felt all that qualified-and the type of missions she went on were ones where discretion was key anyway.

That done, she met his eyes once more, keeping her posture straight and her air calm, though she was also mentally ready to flee if need be. Belatedly, she wondered if she should introduce herself, but then it also felt a little rude to speak before he did. As such, she simply kept her position and waited.

Markov Manor, a hilltop estate overlooking the Kruin Pass. It had a view of Thraben and was within a night's walk of the Voldaren
Estate. Standing on the barren floor at the foot of his towering home, Elwin felt a swell of apprehension. He had never liked the
place, always filled with a sense of ostracism despite being surrounded by his closest relatives. In his young life, the people he
was most familiar with dwelled in that brooding abode, yet he felt no sense of longing, just something eerily close to
discontentment. He shook his head at the thought, dismissing anything other than undying fealty. The Vampire had yet to visit
the main manor once, not since before he was the wide-eyed apprentice of one of the army's blacksmiths. Being nurtured by
a crowd of callous, yet pristine, vampiric knights had taught Elwin the beginnings of what he'd now execute firsthand on the
battlefield.

The deep glade they were stationed in was coated in hues of murky greens, purples and occasional hints of a brassy orange, a
palette Elwin was all too familiar with. When he was a child he would scale the sharp and jagged rock face as though it were
his backyard, escaping the confines of his high-strung family and their all-consuming walls. It wasn't until he had an accidental
encounter with a beast that dwelled within that he was found out, forbidden from returning and not long after, cast away from
the main family. Uncanny black hair ever a burden on his shoulders. What he couldn't understand for the longest time was the
severity of the situation he was caught in, simply enamored with the little discoveries such as faintly glowing rocks or
fumigating fungi. Long since having forgotten his love for adventure.

In spite of his skepticism, he was well aware that the results of the upcoming battle were to be reported back to none other
than his father, if he could even call the man that. Schooling his expression for concern of the recruits scuttling around him,
he focused that energy on the task at hand; guarding the Kruin Pass for crucial supplies to reach the people of Gavony. Gavony
was a collection of human settlements founded on the rocky moors surrounding Thraben. The Lunarch Mikaeus stressed the
importance of this mission as the smaller human towns were constantly under the barrage of night creatures consumed by
Emrakul's madness, not to mention the threat of the deranged Falkenrath. Many of his family had quietly lamented the loss
of another vampire race, beings such as himself succumbing to the pressure of Emrakul's wrath much sooner than others. As
the seat of the Avacynian Church, built as a city of walls and various bulwarks designed to keep supernatural threats at bay,
Thraben was one of the safest places for their people while smaller settlements were constantly under siege by monsters,
yet little was done to quell the death and panic.

Trapped in thoughts of what his backward family were gaining from this stunt, Elwin found himself unconsciously pacing around
each corner of their encampment, ever the guard dog Tartarus liked to joke he was. Soon fed up with his own antics, he traced
his steps back to the most central tent where he knew Tartarus lay skulking around, likely bored out of her mind but hopefully
dozing off. Lucky enough to catch her sleeping curled behind his room, the vampire thanked the darkness of the night sky that
he wouldn't be caught in any mental sparring, at least not until his friend undoubtedly rose. While they shared a bond not far
from a strange love, he did get tired of the constant yapping in his mind, recently growing more and more concerned by his
own responses as they grew further and further from his character. He found himself quipping back where he used to remain
silent, returning Tartarus' energy in full and betraying his own nature in lower moments that he refused to acknowledge. Well
aware of the tampering done to his own draconic partner, he hoped that this was a common side affect among riders, even
going as far as probing answers from the others that he'd met. Yet to receive any satisfactory responses, Elwin grieved his
seemingly bleak future with her. Having little to no control over their bond, and at times his own mind, he feared for the
worst when the familiar sense of skepticism breached his otherwise unfaltering heart.

Contrary to popular belief, vampires did in fact get tired, and that was exactly the mindset he was in when he came face to
face with an unfamiliar humanoid. His face not once betraying the inner recoil he experienced in that moment, intrigued,
annoyed or confused, he couldn't decide so he simply crossed his arms and straightened his back. Hopefully conveying how
unimpressed he was by the sudden confrontation. Stood in front of himself was a hooded figure he would barely have been
able to make out if not for his impressive night vision, noting the strangers hair colour before having his attention brought
to the golden clump in their hand. Suddenly he wished that he could sleep so as to have an excuse instead of having to deal
with the new arrival. Amongst the thickening smog and shadow she blended quite nicely, obviously a more covert operative
and a good one at that, slinking past the few defenses Elwin and his soldiers had put up. "Tell her she smells nice," choking
silently before he could even get a word out, scrunching his brows in disapproval at the very eloquent approach Tartarus
suggested. Ignoring his companion for his own sanity, pausing briefly, not quite sure what he'll accidentally let slip between
different potential conversation starters. Understanding that he'd been staunching stock still from the moment he left his
tent, he figured he should speak up sometime soon. "I can't believe they were serious when they said that they were
sending the new dragon rider
,"
muttering in hushed disbelief. "Welcome Rune Tzorfeld. I am Elwin Markov, the leader of
this operation.
"
He spoke evenly with an accented curl to his words, having no interest whatsoever in entertaining
what he had already deemed an outlier in his masterfully curated battle plans.

Curious but too proud to ask how exactly she had arrived unnoticed, believing he was merely too distracted to detect her. He
did feel the need to ask about her dragon, however, noting that unlike the few other dragon riders he had met, he didn't sense
a familiar presence close behind. She was also the first one he'd seen to carry around that ornate hunk of scrap metal, the
others being discernable by aura alone. Pausing to peer around her figure as though he'd missed something obvious, he still
saw nothing of a divine beast nearby. "Surely you weren't foolish enough to leave your companion behind?" He couldn't help
but grate scornfully, making it clear that he was ridiculing her as though she wasn't going to be of much help alone. The haughty
man sized her up from head to toe, sure to take his time in judging her stature. From the moment they first made contact, he'd
figured that she had somewhat of a problem with him, unease briefly crossing her stance but he paid it no mind, fairly intimate
with such a reaction due to his vampire status. Wondering what exactly caused the tough posturing despite this being their
first interaction. Unconcerned with her discomfort, he was a little taken back by the charisma she quickly exuded, quietly
miffed by her lack of fear in his presence. At her confidence, he further deemed her a hinderance that future Elwin would
have to deal with, finding his current self somewhat on edge of ire.

Resigning to a more polite tone purely for the fact that she was now a teammate of his, he dropped his shoulders slightly and
cleared his throat of any remaining malice. At least... that's what he'd hoped to have achieved. "If you require sleep, I'm sure
one of the knights wouldn't mind showing you the way to a vacant tent
,"
he grumbled as kindly as he possibly could. "If not,
kindly mind your own business and don't bother me
."
Desiring nothing more than to return to his thoughts,he prayed internally
that she wasn't bold enough to require a briefing now, both parties possessing the knowledge that he would be awake regardless
and have no choice but to fill her in on tomorrow's plans.

Rune Tzorfeld
Location: A warzone near the Kruin pass
Feeling: Awkward, Nettled, resigned

The silence drew on for a while, tense and uncomfortable, the other simply drawing himself up and crossing his arms. The both of them ended up staring at each other, not saying a word. The vampire's gaze slowly drifted up and down her body, taking her measure at his leisure. Uncomfortable with just about any attention, Rune fought the urge to fidget, using the gap in time to try and at least find out more about him in turn.

He had the pale skin and red eyes of legend, the two contrasting to create an intimidating, striking presence. Taller than her, with black locks and a commanding presence, he was very likely the general. Though she'd just met the vampire, Rune already couldn't quite imagine him taking orders with any sort of acceptance.

There was the slightest of movements, the briefest stir in the air, and though the other was still staring at her, Rune found her gaze drifting behind the vampire, though she couldn't say exactly why.

Two sets of eyes, just as piercing red as the vampire's, staring curiously at her, and as Rune's eyesight adjusted to the darkness within the tent, she found herself face to face with a two headed dragon lying just behind. Though it was nowhere near the size of her when she turned, it was large enough that she knew she'd have a pretty bad neck cramp if it was standing. Rune's eyes widened slightly, and she sent out a mental greeting to the other greeting instinctually, her mind politely brushing against the other's to let out a polite telepathic rumble of greeting. "My name is Rune, it's nice to meet you. You're beautiful." It was true. Where her dragon form was large and brutish, green and forceful as if a manifested guardian of the earth itself, this dragon's presence seemed graceful and imperious, the inky blackness of their scales and their red eyes matching their rider perfectly, giving them a sense of symmetry. Wait, rider?

At the side of her vision, the vampire's eyebrows furrowed, and Rune found her attention slipping back to the vampire, mentally cursing herself for the lapse in concentration. If he'd been in a bad mood, he might have ended her before she'd blinked, status or not. His words were elegant, having a learned, almost smoky lilt to his speech that might have been pleasing to the ear if he wasn't being openly condescending.

All the same, it wasn't like Rune was going to disagree. She wouldn't have thought she should have been sent to a warfield either, but here she was. It seemed like he already knew her name, and when he introduced himself, Rune startled just slightly. She'd suspected it upon seeing the dragon behind him, but was a vampire really a rider? Thinking about it, there was no reason why he wouldn't be, but somehow, she hadn't expected that. It wasn't like she'd met any other rider other than Calypso, and he certainly seemed to have the similar aura of efficiency and regal poise. How old was his dragon, then? Nodding slowly, Rune simply tucked the information away.

Dragon rider and leader of the operation, all in one, then? Perhaps it was good that vampires didn't need sleep. It sounded like a lot for one person, no matter how skilled. There was something vaguely familiar in his gaze that reminded Rune of the Lunarch, and as she watched him, she dimly realised that it was the way they looked at her, as if figuring out how to fit her into their plans. But where the Lunarch seemed flexible, almost eager, he seemed almost irritated or unfazed, if his tone was anything to go by. She certainly couldn't tell anything with his poker face, but he seemed quite stubborn. Or did all vampires just stand stock still?

He was peering around her now, and though she knew the question was coming, having it asked so disdainfully definitely didn't make it easier. If she was in her dragon form, her spines would definitely be raising. Despite the condescension in his voice, however, his words made Rune fight to hide a smile, reducing it to the slightest twitch of the corner of her lips. It wasn't the first time she'd dealt with the arrogant, and though he might be more skilled than most, the way to deal with them was the same. She let her gaze drop as she lowered her head appeasingly. "Of course not," she said softly, unable to stop the way her smile widened bitterly now that her face was out of the other's sight. Leave her companion behind? She couldn't do that if she tried. "There's no need to worry, my companion will show up if required."

She'd heard the insults both spoken and unspoken clear as day, and the beast in her was starting to cock it's head and pay attention, but she held it back. There was no need to cause a fight here, and to be honest he wasn't wrong. It was her first time at a battlefield, and it wasn't like she was aiming to do exceptionally well either, or the Lunarch would start sending her on more of these missions. Thinking about the similarities between the way the two looked at her, Rune mentally decided that though both were annoying, she preferred Elwin's manner a little more. At least she knew where she stood with him for now.

Beyond all those reasons, however, it was clear that this man was prideful and skilled, and appeared to have it under control. Fighting him would be troublesome, and she would then have to make decisions. Rune was perfectly happy with having him underestimate her.

And he did, seeming to try and control his ire as he spoke, though it didn't quite seem to translate into tolerance as much as it did reluctance. She looked up as he spoke of a place to sleep, nodding at the arrangement. At his next statement, however, she cocked her head. He seemed to have the same idea, then, perfectly happy to shelf her away without asking her about what she could do or help with. Did he think her that useless, or had he already gotten the plans all sorted out where he didn't need the help?

Either way, Rune would be happy to accommodate that decision, especially when it meant she got to stay out the way. However... "A place to rest would be appreciated, and I'd love to be out of your way, but I think I'd be able to do that better if I knew what you were planning to do." Cocking her head slightly, Rune spared the briefest second to look around the tent. "Would it be okay if we took a seat?" If this was long, she had no intention to keep standing here awkwardly in the middle of his tent.

At the kind greeting Tartarus mentally purred, it was rare for a human to address her with the respect she deserved, even
rarer for her killer instincts to remain dormant at such an intrusion. The beast stretched her dual necks to reveal sharp
frills, slowly jostling them in a display of preening at the compliment, "The pleasure is mine aromatic green one." Feeling
the need to point out her thoughts on Rune's scent, it was familiar in a way that she believed it to be more entertaining
should she keep it to herself. Habouring her suspicions, she eyed the unassuming Elwin raptly at the announcement of Rune's
dragon, or lack therefore of.

As one might expect, his expression greyed once more as dark clouds seemed to swarm his mind, their connection telling the
dragon all she needed to know. "Not only do you arrive with all the grace of an assassin, unannounced, but you lack
the foresight to introduce your dragon to your superior
,"
this time he announced his thoughts without hesitance as in his
mind only their dragon could be of any help. It wasn't unusual for him to dismiss humans, having a general distrust for such
a greedy race. He had originally been mildly excited to meet another dragon, revering their every move much like his own,
yet this puny thing had denied his request. Under his shrewd gaze were glimpses of distaste emanating from the one in front
of him, feeling the juxtaposition of their natures clashing before they'd even spent a full twenty-four hours together. The
need to groan in frustration was rapidly pursuing his voice as he self-soothed with a hand pinching his brows, at the sound
of interest in his plans he decided to tuck away his exhaustion in favour of doing a good job. "In that case, sit," he spoke
unceremoniously and pointed to the chair closest to them, voice void of anything in particular as his work persona took over.

Between the pair and dominating the center of his tent stood a large round table covered in various maps, diagrams and scrolls
of information on the opposition. The vampire unfurled a single map closest to him, having read the article a hundred times
over the sight only proved to remind him once again. "Early tomorrow morning in the guise of dawn we will leave, I have
assigned two small infantry groups to be stationed at the front and rear of our precious cargo, Tartarus and I will be
following above and you
..."
Gesturing from his wonderful partner with reverence to mostly disappointment directed at Rune,
he made a point to pretend to ponder extra hard about where she might come in handy. "I believe you would be best suited to
your own covert unit, travelling within the rocks and conifer that frame our main route, do familiarize yourself with this
map before then
."
Despite his obvious disrespect, Elwin had already assigned her to this role in his mind the moment she'd
arrived, having been impressed with the one able to avoid his detection. "If I'm completely transparent, you will be in our
front lines as I expect the enemy to use that cover to ambush us
,"
he drawled feigning disinterest as he sized up her response
to such a position.

After the concise briefing, it was time for the vampire to demand privacy. Elwin was never one for sharing his space, the
near-empty yet grand tent was tantamount to that fact, it was unusual for anyone to breach his solitude for anything other
than work and that wasn't about to change. "Now would you kindly exit and follow recruit Dore to your tent, they should be
to your immediate left once you leave my space
,"
he made sure to add extra annunciation to both 'exit,' and 'leave,' before
adding that he'd see her in the morning.

In his thoughts he had many thing to mull and stress over, particularly this missions hand off, too many outward factors were
attacking his mind to the point of intense fatigue, something uncommon for his kind. It was days like these that Elwin found
no comfort in his companion, already feeling Tartarus' nagging presence pushing and pulling him in directions he'd never go
were he truly himself. The raven haired man berated himself to no end, furious at his weakness and the powerlessness he felt
when Tartarus swayed his morals, melding them into her own whenever he was at his lowest. The threat of visiting his father
or the failure he might bring his mother an all-consuming weight. The man had no option other than to hunch over and grasp
his head, hoping the pressure might alleviate some of his brain-splitting symptoms. "This matriarch suggests you allow her to
control the situation tomorrow
,"
Tartarus hollowly suggested. It wasn't the first time the onyx creature offered to solve his
problems, unfortunately it would do more harm than good to let her loose, he knew just how destructive she could be under the
pretense it was him she was protecting; though he had foolishly granted her control in the past, nothing but death and darkness
followed.

"You aren't needed for such a small conflict Tara," flattery was perhaps the only form of communication his friend would listen
to, reminding him of his own condescension as it was a shared trait they'd bonded over. "I supposed you're right," and with
that, Elwin had swiftly avoided what could have been an even greater conflict. Finally backing down, he was washed over in a
shared sense of ease, his breath evening and the fog clearing. Choosing to spend the rest of his night and early morning going
over the plans a hundred more times, he conceded to his obsessively meticulous nature in the lone silence of night.

Moments before the first sign of lightening in the morning sky, it was time for Elwin and his troops to assemble. Hurried and
hushed, his soldiers moved with a trained efficiency that seemed almost mechanical, having experience their fair share of the
captains wrath should his orders and their movements misalign. Having reflected on their first meeting, this time he approached
the fellow dragon-rider with more patience, time to himself seeming to have cooled his ire. He greeted her with a nod when he
spotted her emerging from her tent nearby, "your unit will be leaving first to scout, I will be listening out for a signal of
your choosing to confirming it's clear for the rest of us to move out
,"
awkwardly and unsure of himself, he skipped a proper
hello in favour of talking directly about the mission, something that came much easier to him then pleasantries.

Rune Tzorfeld
Location: A warzone in the Kruin pass
Feeling: Awed, surprised, bemused, resigned

The black dragon stretched, her movements limber and smooth as her frills fanned out, an impressive visual display that had Rune's own dragon taking more interest. As she listened to the dragoness' words, she hid a smile deep within her, knowing that it would probably sour the vampire's mood more. All the same, from her words, it was clear that her Dragon wasn't as hidden as she thought it was, even with all the training. Did her smell give her away?

Even so, perhaps it was because of how she was part dragon now, but she felt a camaraderie with the other, and as such was happy that the other seemed pleased by her presence. If they'd had more time-and more privacy- Rune felt like she wanted to get to know the other more, perhaps even take a joyride through the clouds. Maybe after the mission was over, they could steal a little time for themselves.

Or perhaps, the relief was also borne out the sharp contrast of Tartarus' reaction to her rider's, whose negative feelings about the whole situation were abundantly clear from his expression. With how he was clearly in charge, Rune didn't particularly want to ruffle his feathers, but it seemed like it was an inevitable process.

At his accusing tone, Rune looked away in what could be a rough approximation of shame, though her eyes widened slowly as she made sense of his words. There was his insult- which was actually quite the compliment, to be acknowledged for her stealth, even negatively was quite the accomplishment, and even more so from the vampire. Though she'd only known him for a few minutes at most, Rune could already tell that praise was something you'd probably only hear from the man if he was delirious.

But more importantly, he didn't know.

As Elwin snidely chastised Rune for not bringing her dragon, Rune let out a soft breath, something that had been tightly wound in her body since she heard of the mission starting to relax. He didn't know what she was.

For a brief moment, Rune actually felt grateful to how vague the Church often was.

Of course, he would have to know in due time, and it wasn't like she was going to hide it if it came down to it-the mission was more important than her ego or how she felt about her situation- but at least with this her reputation did not walk before her. He'd not had to wonder about the half dragon half human whelk entering into his compounds. He could meet her, as a dragon rider. The mutant part could come in later.

Of course, exactly when he would need to know was debatable. There was an argument to be had about telling him of the truth now, and knowing that Tartarus knew, Rune waited for the inevitable change in his demeanour when the dragoness would share her knowledge. When Rune looked up, however, there was only annoyance and dismissiveness in his body, and she held her tongue. "My apologies. She... prefers privacy, but she will be here at any time if she is required."

After all, he'd said she could just stay out of his way, right? If he had this skirmish in the bag, perhaps she could even get through this without turning, be a foolish but stealthy dragon rider in the vampire's mind for a little longer. Of course, she'd had training, and she'd fought and subdued others, but an active warfront? It was her first time, and she wasn't exactly chomping at the bit.

Their personalities couldn't be more different, but at the end of the day, it seemed like he prioritised the mission's success over any of his personal grievances. He was clearly tired, and open about his dislike for the situation, but she could almost see him bundling his emotions and pushing it away to look at what was at hand, and no matter what he felt about her or what she might feel as a response, that was something worthy of respect. Taking a seat as instructed, Rune wondered if he was simply a person that took great pride in his work, or if he was like her.

Did the Church have something on him too?

All the same, that was hard to imagine, that such a proud and confident person would allow himself to follow any sort of orders. And yet, she couldn't quite imagine the Lunarch not being obeyed either.

Either way, that wasn't pertinent to the job at hand. Leaning forward to look at the map, Rune let her attention roam across the drawings and the markings of the placements of the troops, trying to commit it to memory. Perhaps if she'd been better versed in warfare, or maybe even geography, she could glean more understanding of the condition this war was in, how many men they or the other side had, or perhaps even an insight into the character of the other dragon rider himself. Unfortunately, her understanding was at a basic level, if even that, and so she simply tried to remember where the mountains were, or where the army would be standing.

They circled round the cargo, with Elwin and his partner protected the skies, and when Elwin paused after speaking about her, Rune momentarily hoped that his dismissive attitude would go so far as to just let her sleep in as an attempt to wound her pride. When he continued, however, Rune tried not to let her disappointment show, simply nodding as she considered the main route she had to safeguard. So it was a job to transport things then?

Momentarily, she wondered why they couldn't just heft the cargo directly to where they wanted to go if it was just about transporting. If she was completely frank, Rune had no clue about the place or even the situation, courtesy of the vagarities of the Church, and this was the first real glimpse she'd had into the going ons that were happening. Perhaps it would've been too cumbersome for Tara to lift over alone, but to Elwin's knowledge, they now had two dragons. Was it more about the protection of the pass then it was really about the transport?

Still, Rune wasn't about to ask and disrupt the vampire's thought process, and knowing that the only thing she knew was that she had a lack of information, she looked at the markings again, continuing to commit it to memory. If she was to be honest, she'd rather not fight at all, but the mission seemed simple enough. Just don't let anyone through, right? "I can do that." She said blandly, hoping to sound as uninteresting as possible. She'd already seemed to have displayed enough that he thought she could be deployed, and any more would be quite at cross purposes with her own thoughts.

Then, she was being dismissed. Taking a last look at what was quite possibly the real thing she'd be thrown into tomorrow, Rune mentally thanked the stars for being a person that learned more quickly on the ground than by studying layouts. Given the Church and this rider's behaviour, she was probably going to have to get used to it.

Rune stood up, giving both of them a small bow. "Then, I'll see you in the morning. Have a good rest." After she'd spoken, Rune frowned a little, contemplating to herself. Did vampires sleep? All the same she wasn't about to ask him such a thing, so she straightened, turning and finding Dore at the exact spot Elwin had mentioned. The soldier lead her to a new, private tent, and when she enquired as to who she'd apparently uprooted, Rune was surprised to learn that they'd erected the tent in the time of the short exchange of words she'd had with Elwin. Expressing her thanks gently, Rune wanted to meet the mare she'd rode in, but as she lingered at the entrance, it became quite clear that the soldier had also appointed themselves their guard, not being permitted to leave till she was safely ensconced within the quarters. Giving them a word of thanks instead, Rune watched the soldier fight their own surprise, and as she went in, Rune got herself settled for the night as she thought. Whilst maps and warfare weren't her specialty, she'd been watching people since she'd been turned, and the way one's men behaved told people a lot about their leader. Clearly, there was a lot to unpack here.

As such, she wasn't too surprised when she'd left her tent and found them all standing at attention in the morning, nor was the fact that Elwin had already seen her and was making his way over. Returning his nod, Rune found herself the recipient of further clarification of the previous day's orders, 'her' unit already stepping up as he mentioned this, their movements precise and efficient. He was clearly a man used to precision and obedience, and one that cared not only about the goal being reached, but that it was done right every step of the way.

And so she only tilted her head at 'her' unit, leading the way with them into the trees till they were out of even supernatural sight and earshot before she stopped. The unit stopped in turn with her, all of them hyperfocused both on the forest and on her actions. Clearly news of her being a dragon rider had gone around. "Look," she started, before pausing, not quite sure how to say what she wanted to put forth, "You guys had the role of scout before I was even here, right?"

It took a while, but after a moment, they all nodded, bewilderment flashing across the faces of some of those that weren't as guarded as the others. Allowing herself a small smile, Rune continued. "Just do what you were going to do from the start, and I'll assist you if required. I don't really like being looked at for what to do."

There was a bigger pause, before the one from before-Dore, if she remembered correctly, stepped up cautiously. At Rune's nod, she proceeded forward, and the others formed up seamlessly behind her. That done, they looked at her curiously, and when Rune only continued to smile encouragingly, continued onward.

And it was a blessing that she'd done so too, for when they fanned out and there were the sounds of a skirmish, she looked over to see three of the scouting unit and an inhuman screech, before staring down some newly familiar red eyes.

Swallowing the sound of surprise that instinctively rose from her gut, Rune looked up at the scouting unit, giving them a thumbs up and only barely stopping herself from shaking. "Good job."

When they turned around, sending off the signal that their current area was clear, Rune simply followed as they moved further along, covering their backs numbly. Rune placed a hand on her heart, mentally trying to calm the rapid gallop it had started up as she gritted her teeth. For all the things in the briefing he'd said (that to be honest, she didn't understand quite a lot of), she would have remembered if he'd mentioned she'd be fighting other vampires.

She knew that in other parts of the world governed by the Church, vampires were seen as monsters, on the same level as werewolves or other creatures of the night, but Rune had grown up in Presh, and her instinctual reaction to seeing one was simply to submit and accept death. Of course, the situation, and even who she was was different now, but to see three humans taking down a vampire, though an uncoordinated one... It felt unnatural, making a chill run through her body.

In that sense, it was good that she'd been sent as a scouting party-Elwin definitely would have a lot to say about her reaction if he'd seen it. It was a period of desensitization, with the scouting party uncovering one vampire, then another, using teamwork and coordination to dispatch the stronger but mentally corrupted beings, and when there started being more of them, she had gotten over it enough to provide adequate backup, tearing a Falkenrath off one of the soldiers with a scaled hand clothed under leathers when they were overwhelmed.

They stared at her in astonishment, possibly having assumed that she wouldn't step in at all, but Rune only shook her head, hiding her discomfort at the attention. "I told you I'd assist you all. Come on, we're not safe."

Even as she said so, she tucked her fully covered hand behind her back, but they'd taken her words to heart, already stepping forward. Was it just her, or did they seem to be faster now?

Though even her assistance had it's limits. When the Falkenrath burst out the bush, this time with the numbers that they were known for, she grabbed Dore out the way of a deadly attack as the soldier set off the first alarm after a series of 'all clear's. Cursing, Rune tightened her hood as green started to colour her neck, the skin already hardening. It had been hopeful of her to wish for an uneventful passing, and now it seemed like the fight had well and truly begun.
