indentCaspian was yanked by the collar and slammed against the alleyways cobble walls before he could even comprehend what was happening. Pain blossomed at the back of his skull, and he knew that a bump would be there if he reached his fingers back and gingerly touched it. Gathering his composure, Caspian clenched his teeth together and scowled. A hiss of pain escaping his lips as he quickly looked down at who decided to assault him this early in the morning.
indentOf course it was Fallon Nicholai who had him pushed up against a wall. A blazing look of fury on her face as per usual. Caspian’s scowl only deepened as he took her in. Her wild mane of dark brown hair was pushed out of her face, tied back by string. Her eyes were as black as midnight, but where much more unforgiving then the night sky could ever be. She looked pissed, but when was Fallon ever happy.
indent“Okay, Ow. No need to be hostile, Silver.”
indent“It’s Fallon to you,” she spat. Hands digging deeper into the fabric of his collar. She sure had a grip. “And you were supposed to be at the castle by now. You’re late, Aerais.”
indentCaspian rolled his eyes. So dramatic. He was sure the King and Queen didn’t mind if he was a few minutes late. He probably wasn’t a priority anyways. Cas knew better than to say that out loud though. He didn’t want to show up with a black eye in front of royalty. He gently put his hands on her wrist, grinning down deviously at her as he dragged her lithe fingers off his loose linen white shirt. She hissed at the contact, quickly snatching her hands away and taking a step back.
indent“Don’t worry, Captain. I was actually on my way to the castle right now. You can tell the syndicate everything is under control,” he said. Voice growing low at the mention of the secret organization.
indentFallon’s eyebrows furrowed for a second, making her look much older than she actually was. Before she nodded and moved aside, letting him pass freely. Finally. He stepped away, black boots meeting stone. He was about to let this eventful conversation drop, before he spun on his heel. Walking backwards as he delighted the young pirate Captain with his voice one last time before he left.
indent“Who knew mermaids could be so feisty!”
indentHe laughed as she started for him again, but he was already gone. Finally getting onto the kingdom's main road. Effectively disappearing into the crowd of people and losing the angry brunette. The information that Silver was half mermaid wasn’t well known. In fact, he was pretty certain her ship's crew knew nothing about it. Information like that was always valuable, especially if you know how to use it.
indentCaspian walked the road up to the gates of the large castle. Marveling at both the large structure as well as the busyness of the town. The winter solstice was in a couple days, and it seemed everyone was stalking up for the cold winter that was soon to come. While the country of Ashain was busy for their own reasons, he knew that the fae of Thedial were busy for another. Every solstice was a big deal to the fae. Huge parties were thrown to celebrate the changing of the seasons. To not only celebrate the seasons cycle, but to celebrate the unity of the unseelie and seelie courts. Even if there was always going to be a tad of hostility between them.
indentCas hated Winter. So he was less enthusiastic about celebrating it then most. Especially since he didn’t even grow up in the courts like normal full blooded fae would. He didn’t know if it was because he was a Summer seelie fae, or if it was because he simply just hated the cold. Whatever the reason, he was much less happy than most about the solstice. He could probably guess that Iqaella was excited. She was a Winter fae after all. She’d be given more magic power in only three days time. Lucky her.
indentBefore making it to the gates, Cas checked that his glamour was still in check. He knew it was, otherwise he most definitely would have been spotted in the city. But it was always good to make sure. Nonetheless, he could feel his glamour working. The buzz under his skin signifying that it was up and covering his fae features. His long pointed ears would have been a dead giveaway that he was fae. And if it wasn’t his ears, it was the long wings protruding from his back.
indentEven though his glamour was always up and working when he was in Ashain, Caspian still wrapped the thin wings around his torso with bandages. He could never be too careful. Even if he had to sometimes lock himself in a room alone to unbandage and rebandage them when the pain got too unbearable. Finally making it to the front gate, he stopped right in front of two guards that gave him rather tense looks. He grinned back at them as he cleared his throat to speak.
indent“My name is Caspian Graham. I’m here to see the King.”
indentThe younger of the two knights looked to the other nervously. He couldn’t have been older than 18. The older dark haired one nodded to the younger, before turning to Caspian with a controlled expression as he spoke.
indent“Right. Please follow me.”
indentThe gate was opened and the knight walked forward, leaving the younger one alone as another knight came to take his place. They made it inside, and Caspian pretended that he couldn’t help but take a moment to stare wide eyed at the long archways, gold and marble walls, and beautiful art pieces that seemed to cover the place. He’d seen it all before, but the knight before him didn’t know that. The knight caught the perfectly crafted look on his face, and chuckled.
indent“That’s probably everyone's reaction when seeing it for the first time. I’m sure I looked the same way.”
indentCas would have probably been embarrassed of his fake expression if this didn’t give him an opportunity to get information.
indent“It is rather impressive. How long have you been here?”
indentThe knight contemplated for a second or two, his steps slowing for a second before picking up once more. “Probably about 11 years. Been here since I was 16.”
indentCaspian nodded with a controlled grin. He probably knew every inch of this place. Could be useful to get to know. He placed his hands behind his back, innocently looking at the knight beside him as he let a low whistle escape his lips. “That’s a long time. You must know the royal family well.”
indent“I suppose. Take a left here.”
indentCas took a left, ignoring the clipped response. It didn’t matter anyways. They had made it to the throne room. Caspian schooled his facial expression, but he couldn’t help but feel his hands become a tad sweaty. He was usually a rather collected and suave person, but he supposed that meeting royalty of any kind would be nerve wracking.
indent“Thank you..Sir?”
indent“Sir Maron Zachari.”
indent“Thank you, Sir Maron,” he finished, trying to memorize the bearded man's face before spinning towards the large marble door. It was pulled open to reveal a throne room. The king sat in a large throne, reading a scroll in his hand. The more he read, the more his lips pierced and his eyebrows strung together. Interesting. Sir Maron cleared his throat from beside him, shifting on his feet.
indent“Your Majesty, I have Caspian Graham here for you.”
indentThe king finally looked up, a greying black hair escaping it’s place under his crown and falling onto his forehead. Caspian was surprised the man still had hair. From beside him, the knight quickly bowed respectively before turning on his heel and leaving the room. Caspian took a couple steps forward before doing the same. Bowing low and sweeping his long black overcoat behind him dramatically, before standing up again to meet the dark eyes of the king. He was sure that the King’s eyes were probably a grey, but from where he was standing they looked an inky black.
indent“Caspian Graham. So we finally met. I heard you’re the best mercenary a man can buy. Is this true?”
indentCas grinned. “I’d hope so, Your Majesty. Otherwise I’d say my reputation has failed me.”
indentThe King chuckled. It wasn’t a nice thing to hear. “Excellent. I hear you like gold, yes? How would you like to do a job for me. Though do bear in mind, it might take you a bit to complete. Even if you're as good at gathering information as you seem to be.”
indentCaspian’s grin wavered, just a tad. That didn’t sound good, even if he was getting paid. “Well you know my price, Your Majesty. That’s all you need to buy my skills. What’s the task if I may ask?”
indentGods, he hated being polite.
indent“I’m sure you’ve heard about our little fae problem,” The King said, twirling his hind in the air as if brushing away a fly. “I’ve been notified of the gathering of more and more of these creatures. Hiding in the shadows of Ashain, waiting for attack. It seems that we might be on the brink of war with Thedial from the looks of things. I’ve already started taking care of the infestation we seem to have. But what I need from you is to dig up information on this little group calling themselves “The Syndicate.””
indentCaspian wanted to throw up.
indent“You’ll be compensated, of course. Would triple your usual prices be sufficient? I’ll even give you a place to stay at the castle for the time being. Until you can dig up information on this annoying thorn in my side.”
indentHe didn’t know what to say for a second. This would definitely complicate things. Cas would most likely have to talk to Fallon again soon. Even better if he could get a hold of Iqaella. This might make things both harder and easier for his original goal.
indentThe Syndicate had contacted him weeks ago for a job. Poison the Queen. He’d been doing that well so far, slowly but surely. It was hard though. Sneaking into the castle was never an easy task. When he had gotten the offer to meet the king to discuss a job, he had been thrilled. It was easier access to complete the job he was already hired to do. The Syndicate knew that as well, which was probably why Fallon paid him a little visit. The conflict of interest didn’t matter as much to Caspian as it would his other employer. Caspian had always been a rat, a traitor, a mercenary. He followed the gold. Who cares if he was a double agent? Even if something inside of him told him that he was betraying his kind.
indentCaspian quickly got over it, and he knew that the Syndicate would as well. They would probably use his new found access to the palace grounds to their advantage. Cas smiled up at the King. He couldn’t refuse
indent“Sounds like we have a deal, Your Majesty.”
indentThe King grinned, though it wasn’t a pleasant sight. Not after the Kings whole anti-fae speech. He clapped his hands together, before gesturing to a servant beside him. “Perfect! I’ll have someone direct you to where you’ll be staying for the time being. I’ll get more detailed instructions about your job for you later.”
indentThe servant stepped forward the same time Caspian bowed goodbye to the King. He was an old man with a bald head and a beard. He looked much too old to be working still. The old man gestured for him to follow, and just as he was about to, he heard his name spoken one last time.
indent“Oh, and Caspian?”
indent“Yes, Your Majesty?”
indent“If any fae decides to get in your way,” The King paused to give him a smile. “Do kill them for me.”
indentCaspian could only nod, before turning away and following the servant out the room. He followed dumbly after the servant, not really sure how to process the last couple events that just took place. Cas almost ran straight into the bowing figure of the servant because he wasn’t paying attention. It took him five seconds to wonder why the servant was gently bowing before he made direct eye contact with the person he has been slowly poisoning for the past couple weeks. Blue eyes blown wide, Caspian quickly bowed. Desperately trying not to make eye contact as he stared much too intently at the floor. She passed rather swiftly, smiling gently at those she passed. Cas almost felt guilty for slowly killing her. Almost.
indentAfter the servant had continued walking, he followed behind. Glancing inquisitively at a man staring after the Queen, before passing a group of knights discussing debating the rights of fae in Ashain. Cas almost barked out laughing. Like fae had any rights in the first place in this godforsaken country.
indentFinally making it to his room, the servant bid him goodbye before turning on his heel and walking away. Caspian looked at his door, sighed, and swung it open.
indent"This is going to be an interesting job," He grumbled to himself.
