Zaos and Almtrude were on their patrol. They were far from Cyrrane territory, and neither spoke, tense and listening for any suspicious noise. If there was a problem, they were alone. In uncharted territory, one never knew what they could encounter. For once, Almtrude had stopped smoking- much to the relief of Zaos. He hated that smell.

As the two advanced, Zaos suddenly heard something and stopped in his tracks. A sort of rumbling, and hooves hitting earth and stone.. "Almt-" the scout chief had raised a hand and was looking intently in the direction of the sound. Zaos understood she had heard it too. Slowly, the two went closer in the direction of the sound.. Until somehow, they found themselves on the end of a small dirt road. In front of them, a cart arrived, pulled by oxen.

"All right," called Waxinnan, "let's take a break. We're going to be heading off the road soon so better rest up." He hopped off the leading cart with a wince (When had his knees begun to hurt like this?) and dug a hole in the ground with which he tied the lead around. The bovines won't be going anywhere, he thought, satisfied. Glancing behind him he saw Saltul helping Kali get down from her cart and Renolla gently disembarking with the sleeping canine pup. Kivee, apparently, was still asleep. A glance in front of him showed two people--wait, what?! Wax stood up so quickly that he got dizzy, a common symptom that Shollun had warned would happen if he sat for too long. One of the people looked familiar, a short woman who wore the clothes of an unknown Hold. And then he realized who she was.

"Almtrude Lightfoot?" Wax asked slowly, bewildered. "What are you doing here? It's been such a long time!" He remembered the dwarf from a single chance meeting many turns ago, back when he was still a young boy in a trader's caravan. Her stories had inspired him to apply for a Harper's apprenticeship at Southern Hold and then he had become a part of another caravan that spread stories until he had settled at Black Rock Weyrhold. He brushed his shirt self-consciously even though he knew the tan shirt was as clean as it could be, after almost a sevenday of travel.

(sorry about taking so long, school just started again. )

"Almtrude? You know this.. person?" Zaos was looking between the unknown man in front of them and the scout chief, who was still standing by his side. Almtrude did not move for a while, her head cocked and her eyes thoughtful. But then, her mouth opened in an 'o' before she grinned, and walked forward to greet the man. "Waxinnan! I almost didn't recognize you! By Giyn, you've grown so much!" the dwarf took his arm and pulled him into a warm embrace, still as motherly as she had always been. She clapped her hand on his back. "How have things been going? You've changed companions since last time we met."

Wax blushed but gave into the hug. Almtrude, from what he remember of her, was an extremely determined woman. "I've grown," he agreed, "settled down at a Weyrhold, taught an apprentice, have a wife." He stepped back a bit and waved for his companions to come. "I'm a Master Harper of Black Rock Weyrhold, now. We--" and here he indicated the others who had approached, "are heading to a Gather we hear is a couple of sevendays from here."

Renolla approached him slowly to avoid waking the pup in her arms, eyeing the dwarf and the tall man suspiciously. "You know them?" she asked Wax, not taking her eyes off either person. Etasi, her gold fire-lizard, chirped from her place on the Headwoman's shoulder. "She's greeting you," said Renolla, no friendliness in her voice.

Almtrude looked over Waxinnan and stepped back, shaking her head. "Oh my oh my, a wife already?" she had noticed the other woman coming closer, but that couldn't ruin her good mood. "I knew Waxinnan when he was a kid." she smiled. "And I am greeting your firelizard too, miss." Almtrude inclined her head. She had no wish to have problems with Waxinnan's new homepeople.

Zaos hadn't been only concentrating on Almtrude's reunion with the unknown man. He had also kept an eye on the other people, who, in contrary to the man, seemed more hostile. As the woman came closer, Zaos walked forward too, his hand instinctively dropping down to the grip of his sword at his side. He didn't talk.

Renolla inclined her head in return. At Almtrude's cheeriness, the Headwoman smiled apologetically. "We've been traveling a long way," she explained. "I'm sorry if we gave the wrong impression." Etasi chittered disapprovingly and Renolla gently bopped the gold's snout. "Be quiet, you," she said gently.

"Yes, a wife," said Wax with a sideways grin. "Nitia, a Master Beastcrafter. Very talented with caring for the animals, and a good woman in every way."

Saltul and Kali approached, Saltul standing slightly in front of Kali. "Nice sword!" Kali chirped, pulling off her sunglasses and rubbing them on her shirt. She closed her eyes as she cleaned them and only opened them once her glasses were back on. "Where did you get it from?"

Almtrude shrugged, her smile slipping for just a second. "One can never be too careful." she replied to Renolla. Then her smile was back and she clapped Waxinnan on the arm. "Good choice! Got yourself a woman you admire, who has different strengths from you. Any children due yet?" she asked. "Can't believe you've grown up so fast. Makes me feel old." she mumbled to herself while waiting for the answer.

Zaos felt the tension go down and he relaxed, the hand falling by his side. And while it did not go back up, the elf still tensed when the two people came closer to him. He was surprised that anyone came up to talk to him. "My sword was forged by elven smiths in the Solis clan. We all have one usually." the elf hesitated. "And err, thank you." he stumbled over the words, not really used to saying that. But he was well aware that being polite would only serve to their advantage.

"No," said Wax with a chuckle. "No children yet. We're talking about it, though." He shrugged. "Right now, I think we've decided that whatever comes is whatever happens. We've got a good Fostering staff and some of the older kids can take care of younger kids if needed."

Saltul frowned, curious. "I've never heard of them," he said. "But we haven't really had any need for swords, yet. Perhaps we could figure out a trade?" he asked the other man, a small smile on his face.

Kali snorted with amusement. "Please forgive him. We've been traveling a long way with some animals and he's desperate to get rid of them. Especially the calf."

"Good, good." Almtrude nodded slowly. She was glad to see Waxinnan. He seemed to be happy where he was- and that was very important for her. Then the Dwarf looked behind the two, at the wagon behind. Here seemed to be many things on it. "May I ask why you're traveling with a wagon?" she inquired. She knew they had talked about a Gather, but she wanted to know more.

Zaos cocked his head. "No, I will not be trading away my sword. And I cannot.. Get you in relation with the smiths of my clan." his voice was dark. Talking about this made him remember his lost status in his clan, which just put him in a bad mood.
