COYOTEPAW
Image
Coyotekit Coyotepaw Coyotesong

gender tom
rank medicine cat apprentice
sexuality biromantic asexual
voice Dipper Pines (from Gravity Falls)
[ADULT :: Tramp (from Lady and the Tramp)]
first impression Rude, but clever

build small and lithe, rather long legs compared to his body
fur wiry, medium-length. This tan and brown-striped tom's mouth always seems to carry a smirk, which complements his smooth gait
eye color dark amber

+ traits Confident, clever, perceptive, cooperative, amiable, diplomat
/ traits Private, stubborn, unaggressive, honest, contradictory
- traits Selfish, passive, clumsy, impulsive, insubordinate
quirks Pretty much useless at anything physical, but has deadly accuracy

heritage Coyotepaw's mother is a former loner named Lichenfoot, although her original name was Lola. She joined TaigaClan while heavily pregnant, and has stayed there ever since. It's unknown who their father is, although Coyotepaw doesn't particularly care. Coyotepaw's kind older brother is Bearpaw (eventually Bearclaw), and his timid little sister is Lynxpaw. Lichenfoot tends to favor Lynxpaw over Bearpaw and Coyotepaw, although Bearpaw was apparently named after their father
other notes Generally distances himself from his family, although he still loves them a lot.
When trying to impress someone, it either goes really well, or he falls on his face
Lichenfoot refers to the three siblings as Bear, Coyote, and Lynx. He originally began training as a warrior apprentice. However, he got paired with a bad mentor, and became a medicine cat apprentice after said mentor pretty much crushed his chances at becoming a warrior
Slight problem is that his sister, Lynxpaw, had hoped to become the medicine cat apprentice but was too shy to ask or say anything. So now the two of them are at odds, although no one's sure why
based off this

( I know my reply is long so don’t be daunted by it if that’s not what you’re used to. xD I don’t want to assume what your writing length is but I figured I’d make the starter long and then mirror whatever length you did for your posts afterwards. c; )

Littlepaw hated the forest that Starclan called home. She was lonely, so very lonely, and she was sick of it. At one time - how long had it been? Days? Weeks? Surely it couldn’t have been any longer - another cat had been around. Her name had been Featherflight, or something along those lines. An old Taigaclan medicine cat who was supposed to lead the way to where everyone else stayed.

But Littlepaw had fallen behind, and before she knew it, Featherflight had disappeared. Had the she-cat even noticed that the one she was guiding had been left behind? Probably not. Featherflight hadn’t even let her get a word in edgewise; she hadn’t even asked Littlepaw’s name.

So Littlepaw had found herself stuck, alone in the woods of Starclan. She’d tried to look for others, but there was no sign of them, and she eventually gave up. Obviously she wasn’t meant to find them. But why was she cursed to live alone?

A rustle in the bushes nearby caused the dead apparentice to jump, drawing her from her thoughts. ”Is someone there?” She whispered the words to herself, crouching down and slowly approaching where the noise had come from. Prowling closer, Littlepaw forced herself to recall her training, and after getting into a crouching position, pounced into the bush.

But apparently she hadn’t remembered her training as well as she thought, for she tumbled through the bush and landed less than gracefully on the other side. Littlepaw groaned, her face stinging a bit from the fall, but her pain was forgotten as she looked up to see who she had just tried to jump.

A cat. But this cat wasn’t a cat that should have been here. He was alive. Littlepaw wasn’t sure how she knew; she just did. Her eyes widened, not sure what to make of things. ”Who are you?”

(ahah, no worries. my posts tend to start out decently long but fortunately/unfortunately begin to decline from there. let me know if, at any point, my posts get too short for you to enjoy the rp properly~ but for now, dear god have fun with this monster. i don't usually write this much, but i was excited xD)

--

Coyotepaw was padding along rather closely to his new mentor, Addercloud. The half-moon was high in the sky, and the stars were shining brightly; the perfect night for a new medicine cat apprentice going to visit StarClan's Gift for the first time--or rather, the Blessed Ice, as his new mentor told him the medicine cats called it. Nonetheless, Coyotepaw found himself unused to travelling alongside cats from another Clan, despite knowing that these were medicine cats, and would never even try to harm him. But that brought up another point that worried the new apprentice. He had trained to be a warrior for a moon before just... Giving up and choosing to become a medicine cat instead. The brown and tan apprentice's tail swished nervously. What if StarClan didn't accept him for his reasoning? What if there were other reasons that StarClan didn't accept him, either?

Eventually, Addercloud shot a look at her apprentice, making Coyotepaw pause in his thoughts. Were his facial expressions giving away what he was thinking? What ever the reason was for his mentor looking at him like that, the apprentice shook his head to clear it. It was far too late to give in to self-doubt now. Besides, he was normally a confident cat. This shouldn't be any different than any other time. And so, he lifted his head up a little higher. "We've almost made it to the Blessed Ice," one of the other medicine cats announced, and it took Coyotepaw moment to realize that he was addressing him. The apprentice awkwardly dipped his head to him, and turned his gaze back to the trail ahead of them. Now, he couldn't help but feel a quickening in his step, his ears were perked, his tail was high, and he felt a small, growing bubble in his chest. Was he--was he excited? After another moment of introspection he supposed that yes, yes he was.

Through the trees' leaves, he caught a glimpse of the glacier known as the Blessed Ice. He wasn't even there yet, and already he was in awe! It was huge! Tail waving, Coyotepaw found himself bounding forward, much to the amusement of the cats behind him. He didn't have to go far before the Blessed Ice was before him in all its glory. He skidded to a stop to simply just stare. "Woah," he whispered to himself, staring at the ice reaching to the sky. Just standing on the top of the hill, it was already noticeably colder. His gaze slowly fell from the top of the ice to the base, seeing a small mass encased inside. Those must be the founders. The apprentice slowly looked around the edge of the Blessed Ice, seeing frozen ice leading the way to its base. The tan and brown tom glanced back at the other medicine cats with a wide, uncharacteristic grin. They were exchanging amused glances with each other, the younger cat's excitement obviously rubbing off on them. Addercloud gave him a nod of approval, giving him permission to meet them there. Coyotepaw didn't waste any more time in rushing down the hill and to the ice.

Immediately, he found himself sliding. The tom let out a yelp, paws flailing everywhere. He wasn't quite sure how he managed to regain his footing, but when he did, he was a lot more careful crossing to the Blessed Ice. Upon making it the the glacier's base, Coyotepaw found that he couldn't see the sky anymore when he looked up. Letting out a shaky breath, he turned to look for the other approaching medicine cats. But as he turned, the dark mass he had seen on the hill was clear. The tom softly gasped and slid back a couple paces. He stared at the three cats sitting in a circle, seeming as if they were talking to each other. They looked... So alive. He couldn't help but shiver, knowing that they had been dead for generations. "Taiga, Tundra, and Steppe," he whispered, reciting the names of the founders that he knew so well.

"That's Taigastar, Tundrastar, and Steppestar to you," came his mentor's laughing voice. Coyotepaw was caught unawares, and ended up jumping straight at the glacier. He grimaced in displeasure before turning to face them. He flicked his ears in greeting as Addercloud continued, "You know, the stories say that this depicts the moment the three founders decided to create their own groups of cats. Although, no cat's quite sure. All anyone knows is that one night, all three of the founders left their Clans on the same night. They woke up and searched for them, eventually finding them encased in the ice. It caused chaos. Some cats tried to claw through the ice to get the founders out, but the rest of the cats blamed each other, and thus started a bloody battle. It wasn't until some cat crunched the ice that the founders spoke to her. She went on to pass the message, and thus ended the war. Now, we medicine cats and leaders break off pieces of the glacier and allow it to melt. We visit StarClan for as long as it continues melting."

Coyotepaw blinked. He had been aware of the glacier's history, but he had never heard of how cats would be able to speak with StarClan. He supposed that would make sense though; it would be a well-kept secret. A secret that was now being shared with him. Another shiver made its way through his body, but not because of the cold this time, either. But there was one thing that bothered him. "So... We only get a few moments to share tongues with StarClan?" he questioned.

Addercloud softly smiled. "Oh, no. I suppose that would be confusing, but time runs longer in StarClan." Hesitantly, he gave a short nod before turning back to the glacier. "Are you ready, Coyotepaw?" Asked his mentor. After a moment of hesitation, Coyotepaw nodded. The light brown tabby she-cat nodded. "Good. StarClan will be pleased to meet you. Now, use your claws to scrape off a bit of the Blessed Ice, and allow it to melt in your mouth."

And Coyotepaw did just that. After placing the glacier's ice in his mouth, he curled up into a ball. The effect was immediate. When the apprentice next awoke, he was in a place he had never seen before, let alone fell asleep in. The apprentice got to his paws and looked around. Where was StarClan? Surely they hadn't rejected him...? "H-Hello?" he called out, ears flattened and tail swishing worriedly. Hearing no one return his call, Coyotepaw hesitantly chose a direction and began walking. Soon enough, something definitely happened. A small, orange she-cat leaped out of the bushes. The tan and brown tom stepped back in surprise, simply staring. *A StarClan cat!* his thoughts supplied eagerly, upon seeing the stars in her fur. *StarClan didn't reject me!*

But then... She didn't seem to know what was going on. He felt his tail droop slightly, but answered the small orange cat. "I-I'm Coyotepaw. The new medicine cat apprentice for TaigaClan," the tom looked at her, hoping that would jog her memory.

( no worries, I love it! long lengthed posts are awesome. c: I’ll let you know if they get too shor. my posts also tend to get smaller in length as things continue, so please let me know if mine are too short. cx )

--

It took Littlepaw a few minutes to fully comprehend what the tan and brown tom said. She was too focused on the fact that this cat was alive. How did he get here? Eyes wide, she walked in a circle around him, simply taking the sight of him in. Just seeing another cat was so refreshing after having been alone for however long. Sure, it probably had just been days, maybe a week or two, but that didn’t matter. She was just so happy to finally be interacting with someone else.

But when she came to a stop in front of him again, his words finally sunk in. ”Taigaclan? You’re from Taigaclan?” Littlepaw stood up a little straighter, eyes shining with exciment. He was from her clan! She poked at his side, testing to make sure she could actually feel it. Starclan, you’re actually alive. You’re alive! How’s the clan?”

She blinked, suddenly realizing she hadn’t actually introduced herself. “Oh, and, um, hi! I’m Littlepaw. Uh, what did you say your name was again? Thinking back on his previous comment, she giggled, shaking her head. What could she say? She was giddy from finally interacting with someone again! ”Oh, Coyotepaw! That’s right, your name is Coyotepaw. It’s nice to meet you! Wait...” There was something else that she had wanted to comment on, something that she had forgotten. It was something that had seemed off about what he’d said previously; or, to be more specific, how he said it. And then she remembered. ”...new medicine cat apprentice?”

What about Bearpaw? She frowned at the ground as she thought about her friend. Did something happen to him? There hasn’t been enough time for him to become a full-fledged medicine cat, has there? Then again, she couldn’t really remember that much about said friend. Had he even still been an apprentice when the...accident happened? Littlepaw honestly wasn’t sure.

”I’m sorry,” Her tail drooped as she realized this Coyotepaw, this medicine cat apprentice, was not expecting someone as useless as her to be the first one to meet him, ”I’m probably not what you expected.”

(honestly, i have literally no complaints on how short a post can be lmao. i'm lazy ;P
Also, I think that you might like to know that when i do
this, that basically means subconscious thoughts, as opposed to *normal thought* ^^)

--

As the she-cat walked around him, Coyotepaw's head kept trying to follow her. He had to stop after a few moments, as he swore he was about to get whiplash. She was... Certainly rather hyperactive. But at the same time, that didn't feel like the right word. Eager? Excited?
Lonely? What ever the word, the tom couldn't help but feel his heart begin to sink. She obviously hadn't been sent to greet him, so that meant that he wasn't in StarClan's favor. He curled his tail tightly against his side, more or less ignoring the she-cat. Had it been why he decided to be a medicine cat? Because he'd been too much of a coward to stick with warrior training? Was it his herit--

The apprentice's thoughts were cut off as he was suddenly poked. He yelped and slightly jumped, turning to glare at the other cat before she continued on. Then he was simply confused. "O-Of course I'm alive!" he huffed, staring at her--oh, Littlepaw, apparently. Fitting, he supposed--in bewilderment. She continued on. Inwardly, he thought that it seemed like she had gotten used to being alone. As if talking to herself had become a normal thing. However, Coyotepaw didn't exactly register that consciously. At the moment, it was just... As if she was just really talkative.

The tan and brown apprentice paused at the sudden segway. "Yeah..." He mewed in confusion. "Addercloud needed an apprentice, so I stepped up. But... Aren't you a part of StarClan? Isn't this something you're supposed to know?" Coyotepaw watched as she suddenly went deep in thought. But whether it was about his questions or not, he wasn't sure. Of course, her next thoughts made him feel a little bad, even if he did want his questions answered. The tom looked away from her.

"I-no, it's fine..." It wasn't fine. Nothing was fine. "It's just... Where are we? Is this really StarClan? Where is everyone?"

( Awesome! And that makes sense, thanks for telling me! ^-^ )

--

Addercloud? Who is that? Littlepaw wracked her brain, trying to put a picture to the name. After a moment, she gave up, having come up with nothing. She couldn’t remember there even being an Addercloud in Taigaclan, or even an Adderpaw. Then again, she was coming up dry in her struggle to even remember her mother’s name, or her father’s, so it wasn’t that much of a stretch to guess that she’d forgotten Addercloud was the medicine cat.

So had she made Bearpaw up? Or perhaps Bearpaw hadn’t been Bearpaw, but had been the medicine cat? This was too confusing. She must have recalled the wrong name, mixed up two different cats. Yes, that was definitely it.

”Starclan? Pft, wha-of course this is Starclan!” Despite her attempt to sound confident, Littlepaw couldn’t even fool herself. So, she sighed before amending her statement. ”That is...I think it is?”

But what if it wasn’t? The thought wiggled its way into her head, nestling in and beginning to nag at her brain. Featherflight, the one who was supposed to take me to every other cat...Hadn’t she mentioned some other place when she was talking? Some place where cats went when they were cruel in life and not good enough to stay with the rest of their ancestors. What was it called again? The Dark Forest? She froze at the thought. Hadn’t Featherflight said they were destined to wander alone for their crimes as penance?

Was that why she was all alone now? But why would she be there? She hadn’t been bad when she was alive; she was sure of it! Besides, Featherflight had been leading her to Starclan. Surely she wouldn’t have come if Littlepaw wasn’t meant to go there? Besides, she’d never heard of a medicine cat meeting the Dark Forest. For Starclan’s sake, she hadn’t even heard of the Dark Forest till Featherflight mentioned it amidst her rambling!

No, Littlepaw hadn’t done anything wrong, and besides, even if she was alone, this forest looked nothing like a dark forest. Then again, despite always referring to it as the accident, she could barely recall the event that had resulted in her arrival here. She knew there had been a battle, but that was about it. She didn’t even remember who had been it.

Had she done something horrible to deserve this fate in that fight? No, no, that couldn’t be the case. Though she wished she remembered what happened so she could put the question to rest.

”I-I am a part of Starclan,” She mewed hurriedly, having convinced herself for now, ”but I...I don’t know anything. I’m sorry, I-I really wish I did, but...well, I haven’t seen another cat in at least a week.” She shuffled over a bot, crouching down so she could look him in the eyes so she could try and gauge his reaction. Her ears flicked back as she tried to figure out what to say. Finally, she decided on the blunt truth, and embarrassedly mewed, ”They sent someone to guide me to everyone else, but...well, I guess I fell behind, because one minute she was there and the next she was gone. I haven’t seen anyone else since; well, besides you, that is. I honestly don’t know where anyone is. I wish I did.”

She quickly sat up, licking her chest. After a moment of avoiding eye contact, she snuck a glance at him to see what he made of it. Maybe he’d have an idea on how to help her find the other Starclan members? He was a medicine cat, after all. Weren’t they supposed to be experts in Starclan stuff? Sure, he was just an apprentice, but surely he could help. Right? The entire job of medicine cats was to help cats. This Coyotepaw could be exactly what she needed to find out where she was supposed to be!

Coyotepaw shuffled his paws, looking around the surrounding area as the orange apprentice tried to assure him that this was, in fact, StarClan. He supposed that he shouldn’t have been surprised when Littlepaw admitted that she wasn’t actually quite sure, but he had still been clinging on to a little bit of hope. The medicine cat apprentice let out a low moan, hoping that the ice would melt soon. He didn’t want to be here any longer. He didn’t know where he was, the cat who was here didn’t seem to know what was going on, and to be perfectly honest, he was scared.

He wasn’t scared that he wouldn’t be a good medicine cat; he was confident he could be if given the chance. But what would happen if he continued on without StarClan’s blessing? What if some cat found out? Was there some special way for his mentor to tell if StarClan rejected him? And what if the ice didn’t melt? Addercloud had said time worked differently here. What if he was going to be trapped here forever? Quickly, he leaned down to lick his tail. It had begun to bristle, and Coyotepaw didn’t need this Littlepaw to know how on edge he was.

The she-cat began to speak again. Her words didn’t help his nerves at all. Not only did Littlepaw not know what’s going on, but she also didn’t know where she was. The other apprentice had been here for several weeks, and she was still here? Coyotepaw suppressed a shiver. How did he get here; a place where apparently only a lost spirit resides? Had this happened to any other cat before? He glanced up at Littlepaw, trying to catch her eye. Unfortunately, she kept her gaze cast down.

Coyotepaw closed his eyes for a moment, taking a deep breath. He had to stop panicking. He was a smart cat; he should be able to figure something out. The lithe apprentice couldn’t afford to place complete dependence on an apprentice anyway, even if she was a StarClan cat. Supposed to be, anyway. She was as lost as he was. The difference was, he was on a time limit. She was not. The tom turned his gaze back to their surroundings, this time taking in the details. The sky was a mix of black, purple, and pink with stars scattered all across it. If nothing else, the galaxy was a gorgeous sight. The trees surrounding them were so very large; much larger than any tree in the living world. If he were to stand right next to its base, then the apprentice wouldn’t even be one eighth of the width on one side. They stretched high up into the sky, and Coyotepaw swore that they were touching the stars. Most of the trees’ bark seemed to be twisted, as if the tree itself were a vine that got too large and began supporting itself. The other trees’ bark seemed to be showing patterns. Pictures, perhaps?

The medicine cat apprentice let out a breath he didn’t realize he’d been holding. This place was absolutely gorgeous. It certainly wasn’t a terrible place to get lost in, but at the same time, Coyotepaw felt almost insignificant compared to the towering trees. Being lost here alone… Coyotepaw couldn’t imagine just how lonely that would be. The apprentice turned back to Littlepaw, finally opening his mouth to speak. But once he did, the world began to spin. He blinked a few times before sitting back. “I… Think I’m waking up.

Littlepaw flinched at his words as if he'd struck her. How was that possible? He'd barely been here, and yet now he had to leave? How was that fair? She didn't want to be alone again! "Wh-What? Already?” The she-cat hadn't meant to sound whiny, but that was probably how she came across. She just couldn't help it. She was terrified of being left in these woods along again. ”You can't be waking up already!”

Heart thudding in her chest, Littlepaw looked about wildly, as if she could somehow find some way to halt the process. Please, please don't,” She whimpered, meeting his gaze again as her voice quivered, ”I...I don't want to be alone.”

Her eyes were threatening to water now. Starclan, this was humiliating. This poor apprentice was going to think she was completely mousebrained, but she couldn't help herself. She didn't want to be left here. And that terror was building up inside her, threatening to explode. Her head hurt, and Littlepaw groaned, almost shaking from the pain.

And finally, she let out a silent scream, feeling as if she was being ripped apart. The orange apprentice crouched down before giving a choked cry as a feeling akin to being doused in water washed over her. It brought to mind memories of screaming, of cold, and of pain. Eyes scrunched tight, she tried to latch out for something, anything, to stop it. She didn't want to have this in her head. And though her eyes were shut, Littlepaw could see a light ahead of her, and she threw herself towards it simply because there was nothing else for her to try. The feeling of water disappeared in an instant, and slowly, Littlepaw forced her eyes open, shaking as she looked about, certain that Coyotepaw must be gone by now. In fact, it might even be his fault.

But then her surroundings came into focus, and Littlepaw let loose a horrified scream as she found herself face to face with three cats seated in a circle - cats that were now encased in ice.
