"I'm afraid once something is truly lost it can never return."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ciel sat at his large wooden desk, fingering an envelope from the one and only Queen Victoria. The sealed letter had arrived earlier in the day, and still there it sat, unopened by the boy who was drumming his fingers on the wooden desk aimlessly. He wanted to avoid opening the letter, and yet he must. It was his duty, as the "Queen's Gaurd Dog" to fulfill any worries that Her Majesty may have. However, the said lady was recently pushing Ciel more and more, giving him a new task every day.
They were all quite ridiculous tasks as well, such as him recovering things like money from recently deceased men so that thieves wouldn't get their grubby prints all over the bills. All of the requests resulted in him having little to no time for lessons, and though Sebastian would find a way to work meals and tea into their packed schedule, the only time the Phantomhive would truly be allowed to have silence was when he slept. Sighing in resignation, he pulled out the sharp blade of a letter opener, and sliced open the red seal that hid the contents from view.
As his eyes scanned the front page of the thick stack of paperwork, he shook his head. Yet another murder case to be solved. People were apparantly being drowned in their baths before they were stabbed repeatedly in their chests, and many were found with their heads shaved. After finishing the first page, Ciel continued to read through newspaper articles, as well as information on the victims. There were no witnesses to any of the crimes, and no major clues were found, so this case could actually prove to be rather difficult for the ordinary man. Once he finished his reading, he called for Sebastian.
After promptly preparing the morning's tea, the raven haired butler glanced at his watch with a sigh. His young Master had been extremely busy lately, and it seemed as time passed they had less time for anything that wasn't solving a case of sorts. This, above all things, but Sebastian in quite the predicament. Meals had to be shorter, lessons cancelled - and the luxury of extra time did not loom over them any longer.
The butler heard Ciel summon him, but was already on his way. He picked up his pace, tea in hand, the sound of his light footsteps the only thing disturbing the silence of the manor's halls. He soon reached the door to his Master's study, and knocked three times with his free hand, before opening the door and heading inside. He placed the tea down on Ciel's large desk.
"For today's morning tea we have Lapsang Souchong, imported directly from the Wuyi region of the Chinese province of Fujian," the butler explained, bowing slightly. "Is there anything else you might require this morning, my lord?" he asked, crimson eyes training the the newly opened letter in his Master's hand.
"Her Majesty has once again asked for our help in solving another murder case. There are unfortunately no witnesses, but I still need you to begin generating a list of possible suspects. Make sure to also contact all family members of the victims to make sure nothing was unusual. And here, you can also take the information to read through."
He handed the thick stack consisting of newspaper clippings and documents to the raven-haired butler.
Ciel picked up the cup of tea that Sebastian had set down in front of him, and took a sip of the tea. He said nothing for a while as he drank some of it, before he finally said something. "I like this tea's flavor. Make sure to prepare it again sometime."
He turned his gaze down to his desk, and it appeared as though he was inspecting the wood to make sure it was flawless. In reality, he was just lost in his own thoughts, already decoding what the killer's strategy must be, and fantasizing about how he was going to catch this murderer. The Phantomhive hoped to catch him quickly and effeciently in an attempt to move on to his more personal, pressing matters.
[ pardon my absence, i've been on vacation. ^^ ]
The raven haired butler nodded, taking the thick stack of papers from his Master. "Of course, my lord." Ah, this again. Sebastian had been hoping, for his Master's sake, that the recent cases would not be followed by another - such a bother they had been recently. Yet, it seems, they would be off again on another murder. He would have to make this quick - they couldn't be late for Elevenses.
At Ciel's comment on the Souchong, he smiled. There certainly was a reason the tea was popular around the world - and hard to find. "I am glad you find it satisfactory," he replied, "is there anything else you may require at the moment, my lord?" his gaze followed his master's cearulean eye to the desk. Of course, he was already consumed in the case, wasn't he? Just like my young master, he thought.
At Sebastian's usual question, the boy thought for a moment. He wasn't really all that hungry at the moment, but perhaps it would be for the best if he ate something. After all, he tended to get distracted and easily irritated if he was hungry, and that happened once he skipped Breakfast. "I would like a scone as well.' Ciel finally spoke; it was quite strange about he always wanted something as simple as a scone. He could have anything in the world that he desired, and yet he chose an easy to find food.
A sigh escaped as he looked up from the desk, chasing away the thoughts of the case for a moment. Pulling some other papers over, he knew that the rest of his work would need tended to since there was no telling how long the case would last. Usually it took a very short amount of time, but it was always in his best interest to be prepared.
