LYDIA BAINE
once amity, now erudite

these sorts of scenes look like they've come straight out of lydia's worst nightmares. all these factions, in a room, glaring at each other? this is not peace. this is hostility. it goes against every single thing lydia has been raised to do - to keep the peace at all costs.

well, what she's about to do goes against everything her family stands for too. so this atmosphere doesn't really make much of a difference.

lydia stands, palms sweaty. she wears the amity red and yellow dress she's worn her whole life - only in slightly different size. it was embarassing when they had to give her two a year when she was shooting up like a weed. but obviously, no one got mad about it. no one ever gets mad, ever shows any kind of emotion besides happiness. it's always been a sharp contrast to people at school. lydia sticks with the other amity girls but she doesn't really belong there. lydia always watches the other faction members in school, and sees them show emotion. she was jealous. she wanted to show emotion and not be penalized for it. well, now's her chance. when she got an erudite option on the simulation test they gave her lydia was thrilled. erudite could be her escape. but amity's where her family, her mother and father and little brother are. she can't let down thom or he'll never forgive her.

who's she kidding? lydia knows what she is going to choose. thom will forgive her because not forgiving might cause conflict. her family will be able to let this choice of hers go. it's lydia to whom this matters most. and now it's time to put her planned course into action. her name has been called and she's shaking now, petrified, rivulets of persperation running down the back of her neck from the base of her hair. it is time to change her life for good.

lydia, when asked later, cannot recall any of the walk other than a single pounding thought. i didn't tell them. i was tol scared they might cause conflict. why didn't i prepare them for this? and then she's cutting her hand open with a knife and there's blood everywhere, something she was raised to fear and it's all too much. lydia begins to cry, silently, so no one can hear. but they can see. the amity girl doesn't know what to do. why doesn't she? everyone knows that amity never raises any transfers.

coals for dauntless. no way. lydia's not brave. spiders still scare her.

glass for candor. she was raised to hate that faction and a part of her still hates their brutally honest culture, even though she'll probably end up interacting with some at some point during her initiation.

water for erudite. her hands hesitates but she forces herself to move on and consider all the options.

smooth gray stones for abnegation. lydia knows she's a little bit vain. abnegation is not for her. she'd never be willing to give up everything she had for a stranger as they are.

soil for amity. strong, steady soil; the stuff she's poured her work into her whole life. but it's not for her and never has been.

lydia's hand hesitates once more before moving decisively over the water. she can't look at her parents or her family or her faction. she just walks with her eyes cast downwards away from here. she was one of the first to be called. lydia will be avoiding her family's looks the rest of the ceremony. she's not looking forwards to that.

-------jett knew from a young age that he was never meant for candor. he told his parents so, and they told him to never lie. now, thinking back upon it, he realizes that they thought he was joking, because he was only a small child, and small children never know what they're talking about. but that's not the truth; they're the most honest, level-headed humans on the planet, with the exception that some of them like to think there are fairies and monsters in their closets and under their beds. but what's wrong with ruining their fun, especially if they're an amity child. but jett wasn't an amity child; he was their arch-enemy. he was a candor. he was the honest.
------- the key word is was
-------you see, when his aptitude test results were given to him, jett knew automatically they were true. he wasn't meant for candor, because he had begun lying so easily from such a young age. how on earth could he have belonged in the faction he was born in. definitely not amity, because he was raised to think they were a bunch of liars [just because he lied about his true nature didn't mean he had to like it]. not dauntless; they're hell raising idiots who jump from a building for the first part of their initiation. and not abnegation, because jett can't keep to himself; he's too selfish for abnegation. but erudite, on the other hand fit everything about him. an intelligent young man, who knows facts, and has a photographic memory. the boy who thirsts for knowledge, even at the expense of his family. the ultimate price. to get though it, he told himself "faction before blood" until it was engraved inside his cranium. it made sense. he wanted to be blue instead of white.
------- the flashbacks of aptitude test day do him no good now. after being wrapped up in his own thoughts for so long, jett merely stumbles forward when his name is called, towards the end. alphabetical order, lead by a leader of abnegation; the man who offers jett a knife after giving it to countless other sixteen year olds. he knows his choice, and he knows he won't hesitate. he simply knows his destiny isn't to splash the blood from his hand onto the glass, but into the red-tinged water. but still, he pauses after dragging the knife over his palm. for a moment, he clutches it to his chest, staring at the transparent material, realizing this is the last time he will ever see his family. he looks up at his mother and father in the crowd. they nod -- his father glumly, his mother with a determined grimace -- as jett sticks his hand over the watery bowl that symbolizes erudite, the faction of knowledge, and lets the blood from his palm fall into the basin.
------- his fate is sealed, but jett doesn't mind. he's comfortable with who he has become, even if it means he can't see his family. they won't mind, he hopes.

      LYDIA BAINE
      once amity, now erudite

xxxxxx"erudite, this way," they say. but lydia's not ready to go just yet. after all this time avoiding her mother's searching eyes she wants to see them one last time. her father isn't looking at her. he's congratulating the amity transfer. there's a twist in lydia's stomach as she watches him do this, ;like he's already forgotten about her. or is just acting happy to avoid causing a scene, her rational side says. but lydia doesn't want rationale. she wants to be full of herself for once. lydia wants to be selfish and petty so she doesn't have to think about the trials ahead. as expected, she's the only amity transfer to erudite. there were a few people who went to abnegation, but other then that no one born in amity transferred. she's on her own. isn't that what you wanted? that little voice in her head asks. no, replies lydia. not really. was this just a huge mistake? she has to live with it for the rest of her life. numbly, lydia turns and follows the rest of the transfers out. her red and yellow dress clashes with their blue. there are a few candor transfers, no abnegation, and maybe one or two dauntless. she can't quite tell. just before she leaves the larger room, lydia realizes who she didn't see. her heads turns automatically, almost of its own volition. and she sees him.
xxxxxxthom is not looking at her either. he's clinging to his mother's hand, head down. it shocks lydia to realize that she no longer considers her mother her mother. erudite is her new family. and so lydia turns her back as she exits. the roup streams out of the double doors and towards the train stop, where one is already waiting. lydia breaks into a run - she's not about to be left behind. that would mean failure of initiation almost immediately. lydia will not be that girl. she runs and just makes it as the doors slide shut, slipping between them just as they close where her fingers were. the train car is full of erudite, and none of them look too friendly or welcoming to the amity outsider. lydia's used to being around smiles and happiness. this is cold, stony silence. the difference disturbs her more than it should. wasn't this what she signed up for anyways? lydia looks for a seat. finally, she spots a candor boy with an empty seat next to him. better to befriend another outsider, rival faction or not, then stand the whole ride. at least they have the transfer part in common. and it looks like the only available seat on the bus. lydia's sure she can win the boy over. she's done it before.
xxxxxxlydia sits next to the candor transfer [who do you think it is? c;] and offers her hand in his face. "hi," she says, voice as bright and cheerful as she can make it what with the shock of everything going on. "i'm lydia. and you are?" her voice seems too loud and shrill to her own ears. lydia realizes just how nervous she truly is. if this stranger turns her down, then lydia will have been rejected by another transfer. and lydia doesn't know if she can take that blow.

-------jett hears something from far away -- something about erudite. without hesitation, he follows the sea of blue with a few colors mixed in. no grey, he notices, but there is another transfer; a girl in the traditional yellow and red amity children sport. he tries not to spit hateful comments at her. jett was raised to hate the amity because they hated confronting what really mattered; they maneuvered through tetchy waters that would start a miniature debate war back in his old faction with ease, because they discussed it so peacefully. nobody ever stood up for what they believed in. everybody settled for melancholy. for peace instead of what they wanted. nothing was ever really resolved in amity.
---------- it's hateful and stupid. he's glad he was never born there.
---------- the rest of the initiates shuffle down the most logical way -- an elevator that five at a time take. he notices over his shoulder that the dauntless sprint down the stairs and a few jump out the window and onto the ground from floor two. idiots.
---------- his turn in the elevator comes and goes, and soon, his white in the sea of blue begins to stand out. once the new erudites are outside, and walking towards the train, he manages to be separated from something he used to stand in the middle of. jett realizes he's an outsider here. he wants to change clothes because that simple act is something he thinks might fix his problem. he knows he's smart. he knows he could work well with them. but the wretched white he's wearing doesn't help his case.
---------- he slips on the train before it can get going too fast for him to catch. jett shuffles to the back in a corner by a second set of doors that a few people come through. he's by himself -- two chairs sit on either side of him, and none other than the amity girl who barely slipped on decides to park herself right next to him. "it's none of your damn bus-" jett halts suddenly. he's not going to be a candor anymore. he's an erudite. erudites have a rivalry with abnegation. he is not in abnegation. his old faction's rivalry with the amity does not apply to him anymore. "jett," he says instead, taking the hand thrust in his face. "jett white."

      LYDIA BAINE
      once amity, now erudite

xxxxxxthis new transfer isn't at all happy to see her. well, what did lydia expect? they'd come from rival factions. not anymore, though. now they were both erudite. "jett," he says, sticking out his hand to shake hers. "jett white." the introduction is so much more formal than lydia's that she's caught off guard for a moment. he has a firm grip compared to lydia's nonthreatning limply held hand. the two of them look rather similar, lydia thinks, like they could be distant relatives of each other. lydia should know. she's looked in a mirror, unlike those abnegation. and lydia thinks her blonde hair and blue eyes - not pretty, really; more stark than that. but rather regal. this boy - jett - is not bad-looking either. being the girl she is, lydia considers him from a purely romantic point of view. but she doesn't know enough about jett to judge him. lydia's a big believer in holding your tongue until you have the full picture of something.
xxxxxx"my full name's lydia baine," lydia offers helpfully. she doesn't know what else to say. obviously jett's not about to start a conversation - no one does friendly like amity, she'd heard people say. the amity girls lydia had been with hadn't minded. she had - lydia really isn't the extroverted, airheaded girl she pretends to be. but it is hard to drop the habit. besides, lydia honestly doesn't want this to be one of those silent rides she dreads. maybe she can get jett on a roll, then withdraw within herself and just nod along happily. that's what she's done before, in amity. "so, you were candor? i bet you're really, uh -" lydia searches her vocabulary for something that isn't rude. the amity do not view candor favorably. "- forthcoming," she finally says. "what was it like there?" this is the honest erudite curiousity that had led lydia here - the desire to learn things, from as many different views as possible, until she had the full story. she wanted to hear about candor from someone who'd been a member and did not view it disfavorably. if anything, initiation would be a chance to truly learn things that the amity around her didn't understand or avoided. it will be the opportunity of a lifetime, whether she ends up factionless at the end or not. lydia just wants the facts.

-------jett coughs, and takes his hand back from the girl who introduced herself as lydia bane. he can't help the heat that rises to his cheeks; he shouldn't have been so rude so quickly. she very well could be a kind girl; one who would be a nice friend. there was a reason she left amity, after all -- she didn't fit in. they both belonged in erudite, so that means that they already have something in common. besides their solitude in being the only two transfers to the faction of knowledge.
------- jett honestly didn't expect the girl to speak again, but she does, offering as much information as one can to a total stranger. lydia's her name. lydia baine. not bad, and rather unusual for amity. baine. that's a somewhat upsetting term, isn't it? similar to bane? as in, "she's going to be the bane of my existence". but maybe jett's just making things up to convince himself he won't ever like the girl. she's too stuck up. he thought. but maybe she isn't stuck up ... just bubbly. "you could call it extroverted," he chuckled. "or brutally honest. i have horror stories over how honest candor was." no, i'm not going to tell you. you obviously want me to keep talking. that's not how i am. "Everything is the same. always. nothing varies, we all bicker and fight over what we want to do and who is right. it's not fun anymore. especially after we start degrading other factions.
