ＢＡＣＫＧＲＯＵＮＤ

this universe is definitely of fiction, by the way.
the world that this competition is set in is a futuristic world where all the buildings are sleek and angular, and all the technology has advanced, although it's not very far flung from what we have today. there wasn't much chance for development, you see.
one of the most important things to keep in mind for this universe is that the world has just gotten out of a fourth world war. some countries sided with the population with genetic mutations, and others fought for the dominance of regular homo sapiens. eventually, the mutated percent of the population won out after ten long years of fighting. it's been twenty seven years since the war. many people still remember it.
after the war, there was a period of reconstruction. the mutants set up something that was similar to the Nuremburg Trials, calling on all people that had sided with the humans in the army to a trial and judged which ones guilty and which were innocent. in the end, most high ranking generals were imprisoned, and the high commander and his close commanders were executed. the generals are still imprisoned, although the prison is pretty much unbreakable.
the setting of the rp will essentially take place in the capitol of one of the richest countries in the world. it is dominated by mutant authority [as there are some small countries that still have homo sapien leaders]. it's important to note that mutants are still the minority. homo sapiens far outstrip mutants in terms of numbers, it's just that they've lost the war and it'll be difficult to regroup again under the eye of the mutants.
the mutants, in other news, have attempted to make a perfect nation, but of course we all know how that goes. it started out as something to make sure there was never any ostracizing of any race ever again, but that didn't really work out. at a glance over, it seems like a perfect place. the streets are clear of trash and the buildings are pristine. but you should think of it like the US Gilded Age: it's coated with gold on the outside but inside everything's rotting.

ＭＵＴＡＮＴＳ

• primarily of the middle-upper to upper class
  
• dominate most roles in law, politics, sciences, education, and law enforcement
• they were born with mutated DNA, which give them particular enhancements or abilities separate from humans
• because they are a branch of human, they're not overly different from regular homo sapiens. evolution takes time. they might have a few irregularities, but you don't see many Hulks walking around.
• there are still some disgruntled sentiments against humans. some have even taken extreme positions against homo sapiens. others are tired of fighting. you can choose which applies to you
  
  ＨＵＭＡＮＳ
• primarily of the middle-lower to lower class; there are a few that are in the middle-upper class.
• dominate most menial roles. trash collection, janitor duties, fast food cashiers, and the like. some of the more intellectually notable were able to keep their roles under close supervision
• war veterans are under watch, although most made it out of the trials alive.
• they outnumber mutants by a long shot.
• most don't act against the regime because they're afraid. some want a full out rebellion, and some are just pleading to the others to let it go. they're tired to fighting. you can choose which applies to you.
  
  ＳＰＬＩＣＥ ＢＡＢＩＥＳ
• this is what we're calling them until someone thinks of a better name
• they're the lowest of the lower classes. if you know anything about the untouchables caste in the Indian caste system, then you should compare it to that.
• they were created in genetic experiments by the humans during the war in an attempt to level the playing field against the mutant armies.
• most are unemployed; very few people will even look at them, much less hire them
• they're usually covered with scars from surgeries.
• their powers are typically uncontrollable, and they're more prone to physical deformities than regular mutants are
• going along with the assumption that one was created the last year of the war, a splice baby should be around 27. you can get away with 26, but yeah. they should mostly be older. because their genetics were falsely tampered with, they can't reproduce and get other splice babies. they're lab-made, after all.

the usual rules. you know. in addition to those:


1. listen to the moderators / judges. those would be smamm, flyn & risu, and an asian to the knee
   
2. only one character per person
   
3. please don't make your character an all powerful person or something.
4. your character must be completely new. you may not use a character you have in the wings. this is in the spirit of the competition!
5. if you miss the date for the writing prompt, you will be eliminated [unless you contact any of the mods with a good reason. because of the length of time we're giving you -- about 1.5 to 2 weeks -- to finish, however, "lots of homework" is not the best excuse. sorry!]. because we go by eastern standard time, please use the clock provided in the "writing prompt" section to check what time it is in EST c:
6. your writing must be centered around your character specifically. there's not much harm in alluding to the other characters, but don't powerplay them or anything in a writing sample.
7. in your downtime, you're welcome to roleplay with your character in the thread here.
8. please pm questions to the moderators. please. this is the first time this is being done, so there are bound to be questions. don't be afraid to ask!

prompt 1 [date due: Monday, March 4th, 12:00 AM EST]:

lately, there have been more and more reports of uprisings throughout the cities. buildings are burning, hospitals are being destroyed, and the authorities can't seem to track down the culprits. it's clear to everyone that there's something brewing beneath the paved streets, but it's not clear what it is, exactly -- except for a select few who are part of these acts against the city and the mutants presiding over them.
the last act of violence was devastating and extravagant. the rebellious infiltrated the city bank that was a large joint in the economy of the city and neighboring communities and drained the entire stores of money, physical and electronic, as well as some valuables stored there in vaults. it was well orchestrated and exact. of course, most of the contents there belonged to mutants. the rebels redistributed the money -- quietly of course -- to the lower classes of the city [except for the splice babies, who no one seems to pay attention to].
meanwhile, the insurance claims of the mutants on their money and items has forced the bank to declare bankruptcy, and everyone is in uproar. stocks have plummeted as businesses have lost significant profits and claims, and many mutants find their valuables gone as well as, in some cases, their life savings. meanwhile, the human class [and some splice babies, if they were wily enough], remain unscathed. there is no question they were behind it, but the question is ... who?

write about where you were on the day the act on the bank occurred. what was your character doing? seeing? feeling? were they there? did they commit the act? were they far away?
in addition, add in a few details of the next day. what were the effects of the act on your character? how did they feel about this happening?
this is a great way to establish where your character's loyalties lie -- or if they lie anywhere at all.
feel free to make some creative fabrications [for example, how the act was done, what time of day it was, some NPCs, anything is fine as long as you don't completely ignore the description above and don't control the other competition entrants].
