ωнαт'ѕ уσυя ∂єƒιηιтιση σƒ ιηѕαηιту?
Is it not right in the mind? Bonkers? Mentally disturbed? We all have our own definitions. There are different perspectives on insane. Crazy. Mad. Off your rocker. Lost your marbles. Out of it. Loony. Not in a right mind. Mentally handicapped. So many names for such a varying perspective. ωнαт'ѕ тнє ρℓσт нєяє?
Enter 1850 A.D. London, England. A maiden has been locked up for three years now; kept in a private house with a private doctor because everyone has deemed her strange - their superstitions have led them to thinking she's a threat to society. Yet, never once has she demonstrated any type of insanity. Sometimes she will have her moments of depression or angst, but never once has she gone about in the way these skeptics say she has. So, the doctor has agreed with the more reasonable members of the community that this lady, in her mere twenties, cannot be imprisoned and kept away from society for no good reason. What do they do about it?
The maiden is sent from her "home" to that of a young man, living alone. She is supposed to stay there for a trial period of two months. If he can report that she is successfully sane in every perspective, she may go about on her way.
...But what happens if she isn't?

N a m e ;; Shayna Grace Raiz.
A g e ;; Physically twenty-three. But really...?
G e n d e r ;; Female, you twit.
S p e c i e s ;; Shhh, don't tell... ναмριяє.
Shayna Grace Raiz is a girl who has become accustomed to the high standards and heavy etiquette of the Victorian era. Though she is a full blood, she is surprisingly not that old for her kind. She is reckless and stubborn, standing out like a princess in the middle of a peasant street. Except... different than that. Locked up because of her hard-headed nature, which the older women viewed dangerous to them, Shayna is perfectly civilized and sane... except she isn't harmless in the least. People of this time period feel women should be submissive and follow the set course for them; this girl isn't going to sit back and watch her life go by without her piloting it. Irish in descent, her temper is as flaming as hair and just as dangerous as Shayna herself.
If I were you, I'd watch your back... And your neck.

Clenched teeth fought back a hiss as the girl composed herself. She couldn't let her emotions get the best of her; not just yet. She finished straightening her lightweight red gown and glanced down at her steel-toed boots. Not exactly in fashion, but it served a different purpose. Gaze returning to the full-size mirror which was about an inch taller than herself - who stood at a whopping 5'10" - she tied up her flaming hair in an elegant knot on the top of her head using red and black ribbons.
Hearing her name called, no, bellowed from the base of the staircase, she threw a last glance at the mirror before walking smoothly and confidently down the marble stairs. Even proper ladies of this time were clumsy compared to Shayna's grace, one that was inhuman. Dress skirting the floor as she reached the base, her sharp green eyes stared down the doctor that had been "taking care of her" for three years. What a pushover. Clearing her throat, she smiled, back as straight as a rail and hands folded in front of her. Impressions, impressions. She could have escaped from this place long ago, but she had a reputation to uphold - a civilized one.
She was waiting for her escort - a young man, apparently about her "age" who was supposed to be sharing his homestead with her for a whole two months. The thought aggravated her. She was perfectly sane; the old crones merely believed it wasn't sane to have a mind of your own. If they had not been so dusty and withered, and if she hadn't been raised civil, she could have easily shown just how independent she was. She fought back a yawn, face blank. She would handle this professionally... Or, somewhat at least. But what good was having new company if you couldn't have some fun? She'd gotten bored with the doctor, since he never remembered a single thing she had pulled on him. She needed.... fresh meat. What a wonderful expression. That brought the corners of her mouth twitching upwards and a light to her eyes before it dulled again, and she was once again submissive as she waited for the servant to escort her new entertainment in. Ahem, sorry, her "caretaker."

Running his hands though his thick, wavy blonde hair, Gideon stalked about his home in a flurry. He hadn't intended to let himself become as late as he was - such a thing being unheard of, especially with something as important as this - yet somehow he'd managed it superbly and was darting about his abode like a mad man. Locating his waist coat, he pulled the infernal thing on over the top of his chrisp white shirt before he also found his black blazer strewn over the back of his desk chair and flung it over his arm.
Gideon set a fast pace as he headed out of his home, instructing the few servants he had to prepare the home for one he arrived back with the girl. He'd heard a small amount about her and about the accusations against her and had to admit there was a part of him that was remotely concerned about it all. Then again, the doctor and his circle had entrusted him with this task he was sure as Hell going to follow it through to the best of his abilities.
Repeating that in his mind, the young gentlemen climbed into the ready waiting carriage and, as he closed the door, the thing started forwards and almost sent the young man flying. He cursed quietly under his breath as he sat down and slipped on his blazer and straightened out his clothing and hair. Tardiness wasn't something he went by and he made sure to make this a one off occassion, calling to the driver to move as fast as possible.
Before long, the carriage rolled up in front of the doctors home and Gideon let out a sigh of relief at arriving. Of course, he still felt remotely nervous but managed to keep it out of his facial expression and eyes and carefully climbed out of the carriage and towards the grand home. On reaching the door, a servant was already ready and waiting for him, leading him through the main entry way to where the doctor and the young woman were waiting for him to arrive. He was mentally psyching himself up, calming himself down, so by the time he reached the doctor and the young lady he was as calm as ever.
The servant introduced him to the pair and a smile curved Gideon's lips slightly before he stepped towards them. Of course, for a few moments his eyes and attention was taken by the young woman who was, without any fault in his mind, very beautiful. Her red hair and pale, freckled skin were a dazzling mixture. But Gideon managed to control himself enough to glance back at the doctor. "Sorry for my tardiness, Doctor. The streets are quite conjested this time of morning," he explained - the latter being a lie however but he was here nonetheless.

As her gaze landed on the lad, the young woman's lips curled into a small, almost nonexistent smile. Oh yes, this would be fun. After the doctor gestured for her to step forward, she gracefully came closer to this man, her steps airy and silent. "You may simply call me Shayna," she said sweetly, forcing her smile - which was hardly innocent - into a more friendly posture. She watched out of the corner of her eye as the doctor and servant left. Well, she was glad that was over. Raising a ginger eyebrow at their now not present forms, her attention turned back to him.
She had heard his name was Gideon. A rather good name, and by the look of him, he would not only be entertaining, but collected. Oh, the calm ones were always so fun to mess with. He seemed to be rather nice, actually. In human standards he would actually be quite handsome. There was a small shuffle as the servant came back with her suitcase of personal belongings. She muttered a nearly inaudible thanks, taking it. Normally she would have him carry it, as in proper culture, but she cared not of that.
Emerald eyes blinking innocently, she cleared her throat as she glanced at her escort and host. "Shall we depart?" she hinted subtly, passing it off as a soft inquiry. She wanted to get out of this wretched hole in the ground and breathe fresh air for the first time in three years. The thought was exhilarating; she couldn't wait. Any place was better than here. Utterly boring, no fun at all, and no difference... Same old routines.

Gideon had to admit he was rather amazed at the young woman standing before him. Now that he had mulled it over, simply calling her beautiful would be an understatement. Her pale skin almost seemed to glow and he wondered how any man could keep firm hold of his senses within her sights. Of course, Gideon knew not to act like a blundering fool and that she was only to be under his care for two months simply for survalence and medical purposes only.
At her introduction, Gideon snapped back to his senses and a warm smile curved his lips once more and he tilted his head in acknowledgement. "Shayna," he repeated, the name not being one he heard often, "I'm Gideon Lightwood." He was sure she may have heard his name already but it simply seemed appropriate for him to reintroduce himself to her nonetheless. Repeating her name in his mind, Gideon couldn't help but think a beautiful name for a beautiful woman before mentally slapping himself around the face. Like any good gentlemen, he had to keep his wits about him and treat her with the upmost curtosy. Not dribbling over her everytime she so much as exhaled in his general direction.
Gideon had barely noticed the Doctor and servant taking their leave until he heard the servant return, Shayna's luggage in hand. When her gaze returned to him, Gideon finally remembered that they were supposed to be leaving at her inquiry. He immediately shook his head a little as if to clear his mind. "Sorry, yes, of course," he replied before indicating that the servant lead them back through the house and to the waiting carriage. Gideon then gestured for Shayna to walk ahead of him before he followed behind her. He internally cursed at his impudence and guessed that catering for this woman would require much will power on his part.

She could practically see the cogs turning in his head. It amused her greatly. She was aware that she was gorgeous by human standards, though her kind would find her quite ordinary. "It's a pleasure," she replied lightly. At his indications, she walked ahead of him, walking past the servant as he opened the door for them. She carried the weighted suitcase as if carrying a roll of parchment; as if it had no weight at all. As the door to the carriage was opened, the servant took her baggage to the back of the coach and she climbed in, sitting primly.
Smoothing the folds of the dress, she leaned in. The doors were closed as Gideon got in on the other side, and with a jolt, the horses started and the carriage began to roll. She stared straight ahead, rather lost in her thoughts. She tilted her head ever so slightly, her breathing having temporarily been heavy as they got outside. It seemed so dreary, but to her it was paradise in the streets. Crisp air that put her lungs to work, and other people besides the servants and the doctor. No stuffy indoors air or boring hours wasted; she had someone new to toy with, and a different setting. She liked where this was going. In fact, the anticipation was getting to her. Control yourself, Shayna, she soothed, calming and gazing out the window now. This would definitely be interesting.

Following the servant and Shayna back towards the entrance of the house, Gideon found himself oddly comparing his own home to that of the doctor's despite the current situation. The doctor's home was very grand, that was clear, and it was fairly blatent - what with all the wood work being as intricate as it was - that he was a professional of high status. Even the servants seemed pristine and organised, their attire neatly pressed and iron. The servants were to reflect that household that they were in.
Gideon's home, although large, was not as grandly designed as the doctor's home. The pebbled driveway was fairly large to accommidate for carriages and was naturally lined with oak trees. But the lengthy drive way lead to quite an anti-climax of a house. It was fairly simple; grand but not too grand, simple without being overlooked and stately without the sounds of snobby laughter calling through the air. Gideon was, in fact, a trainee doctor himself and it was only because of his upper class background that he managed to keep a firm hold of such a home.
Slipping back to reality, Gideon found himself heading towards the carriage. He watched as the servant retrieved her luggage as she climbed into the carriage. Walking around to the other side of the carriage, Gideon thanked the driver - he had hopped down from his perch to open Gideon's door - before he too climed inside the carriage. As before, he'd barely sat down when the carriage jolted and the sounds of pebbles crushed under wheels and hooves could be heard. He glanced at Shayna as she turned her attention to the world outside of the window and realised he was at a loss for conversation; despite being a relaxed and welcoming man he wasn't exactly one for deep conversation. To avoid unneccassary words - and embarressment - Gideon also turned his attention to the streets passing them by.
Before long, they had begun to roll up the driveway towards Gideon's home and he heaved a quiet sigh of relief. He strangely found himself, however, hoping the young woman would not be disappointed with her new surroundings. As he had said, his home was not as becoming as the doctors nor were his servants as well-trained. Yet, for him, it was enough. Just.

Pulled out of her mischievous thoughts and daydreaming about freedom, Shayna felt the carriage lurch under them as it pulled to a stop. She popped her head out of the window in an unladylike manner, grinning. It wasn't as grand as the doctor's, but that meant less empty rooms. Her eyes finally coming to a brighter hue, they flashed with a demonic sheen as she slipped her head back in, opening the door for herself. Sure, she wasn't being completely proper, but here she was, in a new setting, with no stuffy old doctor or whispering servants to aggravate her.
A true smile broadened on her features, and Shayna smoothed her gown as she felt the gravel beneath her crunch. Pulling her luggage off the back of the coach herself, it was clear she did not want to dilly-dally with impressions anymore. Green eyes blinking, she walked silently ahead slightly, pausing only to glance back and wait for Gideon. Thrilled by this new place, she seemed much like a dog who had been given a fresh bone. More to explore here, more people to get acquainted with... and this Gideon fellow to mess with.
Yes, the possibilities were endless. She'd have to be subtle, because that way it was more fun to see the bewilderment on his face. ...Ah, humans, she never got tired of playing with them. At the thought, her eyes momentarily darkened with a cruel pleasure, and her tongue ran along her canines, which sharpened from the pressure. Her face was blank, her mouth closed the whole time, though her eyes held every emotion. "Well, Mister Gideon, I must say I'm impressed," she said cheerfully over her shoulder to him.
