Name: Jayden Lydia Brooke
Gender: Female
Age: 16 year, her birthday is December 19th.
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Ability: A basic description would be mind reading. Jayden can feel the thoughts of another person or being by coming into physical contact with them, and can maintain this connection as long as some part of her is touching the subject. The power is controllable, in the sense that she can choose whether or not to use it, but sometimes she can gain too much information and become overwhelmed, leaving her no choice but to draw out of their mind. Most of the time the only knowledge she can gain is what the subject is thinking, but if she has been in their mind before or knows how they think, then it is possible that she can see memories as well as thoughts. To her, the each mind is like a slightly different code, and once she learns the patterns she read the message. Humans have always been unaware of her intrusion into their mind, but when Jayden tried her power on her horse, the gelding bolted away from her, breaking the contact. It is much harder for her to read non-human thoughts, because something that is not human cannot mentally put them into words, so they are expressed just as raw feelings.
Hair colour: Dark chocolate brown, like a mahogany bay horse, and it gets glossy in the summer, when she pays extra attention to it for parties and beach dates.
Eye colour: Jayden’s eyes are an unnaturally pale shade of blue, with uneven patches of darker, navy blue bordering her pupil and the edge of her iris. Catching the light can make them appear almost see through, and often she wears sunglasses to avoid stares from passers by. The color is most likely a gene linked to the one that gave her a power.
Skin colour: Her skin color is very pale, almost an ivory shade, and her cheeks turn a rosy overtone if it’s cold.
Special Markings (tattoos, scars, etc): Pierced ears, and a small, diamond-shaped scar on just above her right elbow, which she got from a horse bite as a child.
Height: Jayden is 5'6", so about average, but she doesn’t mind, it lets her ride either short or tall horses without feeling awkward or messing up the balance that is needed to help a horse move at its best.
Clothing style: Preppy would be an easy word to describe almost all of the clothing that lines the racks of Jayden’s enormous closet. She likes sweaters and mini skirts, skinny jeans, ruffled tank tops, and anything with a tiny bit of sparkle and detail, to distract from her piercing eyes. To her old school she had to wear a uniform, (bleh!). Shopping with friends means bringing out the ballet flats, lip gloss, frilly cardigan, and miles and miles of plaid and navy blue, all from expensive designers that appeal to her teenage ideals. Jayden doesn’t usually make her own styles, whatever’s popular will soon be found in her closet. When riding she wears pastel polos to brighten up her pale skin tone, along with maybe a rhinestone-studded belt if she feels blingy.
Hairstyle: A bit of styling on Jayden’s part easily transforms her hair’s appearance for any number of social events, but naturally her hair is wavy and thick, ending at a little more than 3 inches below her shoulders. She likes to curl it the most though, and will wind it around her fingers during class. Whenever she rides she puts her hair into a tight bun or french braid and keeps it under her helmet and out of her way.
Frame: Jayden is about average height and weight for her age, and athletically built from riding horses most of her life.
History: Jayden grew up on a prestigious horse farm just outside of Boston, Massachusetts, riding since “before she could walk”. Her father taught her on an old lesson horse named Henrietta, and she fell in love with the sport and the animal. Once she was old enough, she started competing in local horse shows, and then she started winning, lining her walls with blue and tri-colored ribbons. Her parents realized that would be wonderful publicity for their barn, Bel Canto Farms, and pushed her to win more and more, putting a huge amount of pressure on her. Even though they wanted the best for her, Jayden often felt like she was just an advertising gimmick, and became distant from her parents. She reacted to the way they treated her by blowing up once, which did not work, and then holding her tongue, whispering her feelings to Red while he munched on hay. While she does love horses, Jayden was taught to do anything for a blue ribbon, and the pressure made her grow up insecure about herself because once she would win, her parents would just expect her to do better and better. At school, Jayden is about average in terms of academics, but because of her family’s wealth, she always had a place within the circle of popular people. Part of popular cliques and at the top of the social hierarchy, she never told anyone about her power, for fear of being branded as one of the weirdos at school.
Personality: Because of the constant pressure placed upon her by her parents, Jayden grew up insecure, and to people not within her circle of friends she can be rude and snobby, though on the inside she wishes that her life could was as secure as theirs appear to be. She’s nice enough, and always ready with a joke to crack up her popular friends; she loves to make people laugh. Jayden doesn’t speak about her horseback riding much, since it isn’t “cool” to be totally obsessed with something, but she thinks about riding every day, and it is a part of her life that she will never let go of. Her horse, Red Raven or just Red, has been her constant companion, helping her cope with anxiety about school or horse shows by comforting her, and letting her explore his mind, communicating in the most intimate way possible.
Likes: Jayden loves horses, fashion, and whatever’s “in”. When she was little, she had a mobile that played “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” when it twirled, and she has always especially liked that song. She also likes drawing, though she doesn’t get much time to practice it.
Dislikes: Anything not popular, riding Western, and large prints on clothing.
Strengths: Jayden is a talented equestrian, good at working her way to the top of a social hierarchy at school, and using her power to get people to do what she wants, by reading their thoughts and appealing to what they want.
Weaknesses: If someone were to hurt Jayden, physically or emotionally, she probably wouldn’t be able to fight back, even though she might sometimes be the one to start a fight.
Greatest Fear: Jayden’s greatest fear is suffering an accident so severe that she wouldn’t be able to ride again. Another smaller fear is that she will read a mind with so much in it that she will go insane, and never be able to draw out.
Greatest Desire: To reach the Olympics with a horse trained by her, using only natural horsemanship methods and her power.
Goals in life: Jayden wants to be in the Olympics for eventing, and then become a horse trainer, using her powers to figure out what the horse is afraid of an dhow she can help.
What Does He/She Regret: One day, when she was little, Jayden tried to read her friend’s mind. She found out a very dark secret, and now she is always slightly hesitant about reading minds, because she feels that something that personal shouldn’t be read by an intruder.
What is He/She Proud of: Despite complaining about shows, Jayden is proud to be a good equestrian with a possible future in that career, as well as her power, which she is determined to use for good when she grows up.
Family life: Jayden lives with her parents, Michelle and Vincent Brooke, and her little sister who is nine, Lyra ( pronounced Lie- ruh). They often get on each other’s nerves, especially since Lyra’s power is mind bending, she can make people want to do things for her, but most of the time they are allies. Her relationship with her parents is always a little tense, because of the pressure that they put on her, and the fact that they are seemingly unaware of it. Even though she knows her parents wouldn’t intentionally hurt her, sometimes it feels like they don’t realize that she doesn’t want to be an advertisement for their farm. Once, when she was just getting her power, around her ninth birthday, Jayden tried to use it on her parents. She thought it would be funny, and discovered what present they got her. When she told what she had done, they got very mad at her, and she hasn’t read their minds since. Jayden’s best friend is a girl named Mallory, who lives in her home town. Even though she is leaving, Jayden’s confident that her friendship will remain strong, because of a mutual love of horses between them, and daily Skype sessions.
