Ayal chuckled at Trevor’s question while Bansendon was simply confused. I’ll explain it later, Ayal mouthed. Bansendon nodded. “Yeah,” he said to Trevor. “And it’s a chance thing, but I’m hoping to get one sooner than later.” He shrugged and smiled. “An avian’s almost as good, though. The staff’s in charge of the ‘aviary’ and it’s fun working with them. They’ve got just as much personality as a ‘lizard.” He hesitated. “Should I give you the eggs now or should I…send them later?” He had no clue how he would find the underwater village or if he’d get a friendly reception—something told him that it would be dangerous to try—but whatever Trevor said…

Wax’s smile grew by a tiny bit. He and Tamara were on the same page, clearly. “Fire-lizards are good messengers,” he said. “They can convey some words, emotions, and images so long as you tell them who to go to. They can also carry small objects like paper or tools. And,” he said, suddenly remembering something, “they’re pretty good at finding things. Baridna’s told me that her Gen sometimes finds trace minerals that they take back for smelting. And Anna’s Reggie found an old compass once.” Wax shook his head in amusement. “Little guy couldn’t lift the thing, but she certainly tried.” Shulli returned to his shoulder and he hid his wince as her tiny claws dug into the unprotected portion between his collar and shoulder. “They do have the unfortunate tendency of hiding their eggs in unreachable places, and I’ve heard from some cotholds that if they’re not kept in fairs, they sometimes disappear. Not die,” he said quickly, “but…run away to join a wild fair.” He shrugged. “It’s never happened at the weyrhold but we’ve got a small fair between us.”
Wax cocked his head, trying to look honestly curious. “What about your cats? Do you find them…useful?” He had never been to Cyrrane but reports from the dragonriders claimed that it was a fairly small, remote, and primitive hold. Farming was obviously not alien to them, as small fields had been spotted, but it was nothing like the larger operation that the Farmercrafters ran. So if there weren’t large granaries, what were the cats good for? Maybe that’s why they were being traded; useless animals being exchanged for something more useful.

Rorria mirrored the frown, nodding slowly. "That's fascinating," she said with a second look at Endyr. It still looked wrong to have a dragon that wasn't clearly one of the five colors and looked so different from their own dragons but... She supposed that the Beacontowners would know better than she.
"What's life like in your hold?" asked Fella brightly, hoping to move the subject along.
