benji gave another small nod. he could understand that. he personally wouldn't buy overpriced coffee even if he did have the money to do it. "i doubt it's you. probably some stupid thing. but who knows. could be anything, really," benji said with a shrug. if he was being honest with himself, he knew his mother didn't like their family because she knew that sophie often got into trouble. but it could run deeper than just that. "oh. a party? i don't know. i'm not sure. i don't go to parties a lot," he murmured. the only reason he didn't go often was because he always tried to get out of them somehow. he'd always seen portrayals of parties in movies and they made him anxious. so many people drinking and dancing together didn't strike his fancy. "i could try, though, if you wanted."

Sophie nodded, though secretly she knew that that could be a fraction of the reason, but said nothing more on the topic. She looked back up at him as he spoke, and bit her lower lip gently. “Well, there’s a pool, and music. Probably pong. Other games. Drinks of course, but you don’t need to take one. It’s fun, basically just everyone hanging out. You don’t need to, I just thought I’d invite you.” she said, giving a tiny smile.

benji chewed on his cheek. "okay. alright. when's the party?" he questioned, having a feeling that maybe he shouldn't be wondering about it. he fiddled with the edge of his sleeve. he probably would go since he'd already asked about it. he didn't want to come off as rude. that wasn't what he wanted to be known for. "i might decide to go."

Sophie smiled a little, maybe she could even get to know him at the party. Then again, she also didn’t want him to be uncomfortable going if he didn’t want to. She knew it was more her scene than his “It’s tonight, starts at 9:30. I can text you the address if you want,” she said with a shrug before placing her hand over his to really get his attention “But, Benji, seriously. If you don’t want to go, you don’t have to. It was just an offer.” she told him with a nod and a kind gaze before taking her hand back.

benji swallowed and licked his bottom lip. "no, no, don't worry about how i'm feeling about it! i'll go, it's fine, i don't mind. you can send me the address," he quickly explained. now there was no backing out of it, he thought. he'd already said he would go. well, it really was about time he actually started to interact with people. maybe he could do it just this once. he'd have to put an outfit together but he could probably find something in his closet somewhere.

Sophie smiled again “That’s awesome, I’ll text it to you.” she told him with a nod before she felt Cassie tug at her arm. She had forgotten the girl was standing there this whole time. “Oh right, sorry.” she said before turning her attention back to Benji. “We have to go get groceries for her apartment, and I need to put together an outfit. I’ll see you later!” she said with a polite wave goodbye before she followed her friend out the door. The two talked for a while about the exchange while shopping before she was dropped back off at home before the party that night. She quickly sent Benji the address after putting his phone number in her phone under the alias of “Betty-Coworker”.

benji blushed a bit in embarrassment when he realized that he'd been holding her up for quite a while. "thank you. and i'm sorry for holding you up for so long, i didn't mean to keep you forever," he apologized. "see you later," he said as she began to leave. after she left, he grinned widely, feeling proud of himself for actually having an alright conversation with someone for once.

after closing up the library, benji headed back home and checked his phone, thanking sophia again for the address before changing her name in his phone. he set it to "will - cute barista" before shutting off his phone and beginning to scan his closet for an outfit. he was getting more anxious by the second, but it was too late for him to back out of this now.

Sophie stood in front of her closet for a while as she scanned her clothes. She’d been to so many parties, but why did it always seem so hard to choose an outfit. As she heard a knock on her door she quickly moved to lay on her bed, reading the book she had gotten that day. Her hair cascading over her shoulders. “Hey hon, you in for the night?” her mom asked after opening the door. She looked up from the book and smiled before nodding “Yeah, mom. You heading to bed?” she asked, the blatant lie rolling off her tongue easily. After her mom had said goodnight, she locked her bedroom door and went back to scanning her closet before choosing a pair of higher waisted shorts and cute graphic crop top, enough to just show off the belly button ring. She quickly dressed before laying on her bed, waiting for the clock to hit 9:15 when Cassie would pull up.

benji hummed to himself and grabbed a pair of black skinny jeans, black combat boots, and a white sweatshirt that was only slightly big on him. he tensed when he heard a knock on the door, but it was only his mother alerting him of dinner. he gave a quiet reply, saying he wasn't hungry. he rested on his bed for a few minutes, overthinking what would happen. he took a few deep breaths before standing up and quietly beginning to walk out of the house.

unfortunately, his step-father noticed him leaving. "where are you headed off to?" connor questioned.

"uh, heading to a new friends house," benji explained quickly and slipped out the door. he was an awful liar, but at least he had said something instead of nothing. he pulled up the directions to the address he was given and began walking in the direction he was supposed to. he shot sophie a quick text that informed her that he was on his way.

Sophie glanced at her phone as it buzzed before replying to his message, asking if he needed a ride or if he was good. She turned on her salt lamp and turned off her main light so that it was dark in the room, but light enough so she could see when she got back. Cassie pulled up, right on cue, headlights off for the time being until they got past the house. She smiled and climbed out her bedroom window, a weekly occurrence, her mom just didn’t know. She climbed down a tree that was right next to her window and slid into the car. “Hey!” she greeted her friend, as if she hadn’t seen her like all day previously.
