Appleheart's ears swiveled in the direction of the call, then his head turned. He gave Brindlecloud a small smile and slowly padded to the small group, dipping his head in greeting to the other two medicine cats and mewing a hello to the EchoClan she-cat.

Ashleaf walked into the gathering of medicine cats with a loud sigh. He did not want to be there, but knew that he had to since Blackberry was busy with her sister's kitting. He calmly walked over to the rest of the medicine cats and sat down.

He looked around, seeing that even some of the apprentices were bigger then him, even though he was twice or three-times their age. He sighed again and waited for someone to comment on that.

Brindlecloud smiled at her secret mate before looking back at Crowcloud when he asked how Echoclan was doing. "One of our queens, Witheredstalk, had her kits. A tom and a she-kit." She mewed. "I'm afraid that's the only good news we've had..." Brindlecloud looked sadly at the other medicine cats.

"This strange sickness has infected some of our warriors, and one of our warriors, Shrewtail, died from it a few days ago. I've never seen anything like it, it's so horrible. She started bleeding from her nose and eyes and she was convulsing." Brindlecloud's eyes glazed over as she thought about the young she-cat's death.

"Have any of you experienced this sickness before?"

"I was a loner." Crowpaw mewed. "I lived in the large twolegplace with my family and a few others. They were all caught by Twolegs but I managed to escape."

At Brindlecloud's words, Appleheart's eyes narrowed a little in puzzlement as he racked his brain for any idea of what the illness might be. Unfortunately he got nowhere and could only shake his head. "I'm sorry, I've never heard of such a sickness before. What herbs have you given them? Have they had any effect at all?"

He sat and listened quietly as Brindlecloud told her story. It was not something he had ever heard of before. He wished desperately that Blackberry was here, she might know something. His thoughts turned sour and he grimaced as he remembered just how much more time Blackberry was spending in her den rather then doing proper medicine cat duties. It always took him longer to do things because of his small legs, and having her with him always made him feel better.

"I wish that I could help you, Brindelcloud, but I just do not know." Ashleaf said in as polite a tone as he could muster.

He had always been a sour cat, grouchy and easily annoyed. He normally always sounded like he had a thorn in his paw whenever anyone approached him; that was something that Blackberry could never rid him of.

Crowcloud barely noticed as two more medicine cats joined the group. He shook his head, inwardly repulsed. How could such a sickness exist? "I don't know how to help," he said softly. "I hope you find a cure soon. I'll be on the lookout for this sickness and a possible cure." But he would certainly ask Starclan to send guidance to Brindlecloud while he slept.

"Oh." Dustpaw hadn't really heard of her clanmates talk about their pasts, but she was fairly sure that everyone had been a loner before joining, and no one had lived in a twolegplace. "Do you like your clan?"

"It's fine." She mewed to Ashleaf. "If any of your cats start to complain about their paws and eyes burning and they eventually collapse, that's how it started with Echoclan cats." She mewed. "I've tried every herb that I had that went with their symptoms, but nothing worked."

Crowpaw nodded happily. "Everyone in Echoclan has been nice so far. We have a few sick cats so Brindlecloud and I have been busy. Do you like Forestclan?"

"Maybe you need a new herb?" suggested Crowcloud. He didn't know of any herbs that could help with this, but maybe that was because it required something completely new.

Dustpaw nodded enthusiastically. "Well, it's my birth clan!" she said in a teasing tone. "Everyone's really nice and supportive. My littermates are about to become warriors and I wish 'em good luck on their assessments!"

Because this Gathering takes place just before Fleckstorm gives birth, Oakheart is found, and Dustpaw's littermates become warriors, everything they say will be going off of this assumption.

"Perhaps you should try an herb that does not match their symptoms? maybe an existing herb that we know and have has another use?" Ashleaf suggested before nodding along with what else was said.

"I have to go." Squirrelstar croaked, hauling herself onto her aching paws. The light ginger tabby groaned in pain as she took a step, agonizing pain shooting through her paws.

"You will do no such thing!" Brindlecloud hissed at the leader. "You will stay here and get better. Pick a warrior who can make announcements at the gathering for you." Squirrelstar glared at her medicine cat, opening her mouth to argue. She sighed and slumped back into her nest.

"Go tell Raggedtail he's going to take my place." Squirrelstar grumbled. Brindlecloud nodded before turning and leaving the medicine cat den. She headed over to where the tom was sharing a shrew with his mate.

"Raggedtail, Squirrelstar wants you to go in her place and do announcements for Echoclan." Raggedtail's eyes widened in surprise.
"No point in arguing, we gotta go." Brindlecloud mewed. Raggedtail nodded and scrambled to his paws, calling the gathering group to head out.

Raggedtail led the small group into the clearing, looking around with a scared look. "Don't let too much slip." Brindlecloud whispered to him before leading Crowpaw over to where the medicine cat's gathered. Bramblingflight brushed affectionately against her mate's shoulder before following the other Echoclan cats.

The ginger tom sighed and padded over to the leader's rock, looking up with wide eyes. He bunched his legs under him and jumped up onto the rock.
