"I . . I," she sputtered. "I don't know how you knew anything in the first place but for your information we were friends, just friends! He was in love with my very pretty, much prettier than me friend! And you were the one that acted like you didn't want me around, always so busy." Her eyes were shooting fire now. "I just . . . I . . ." She couldn't speak and just shook her head angrily before turning and walking away. How could he?

The stallion's ferocity grew into an inferno. How dare she! At least he had his priorities in check. The stallion reared and bellowed a loud angry roar of a whinny before charging her down. He flew over the fence and bounced to a halt after half twisting to face her. Veteran was at a full stop panting hard. His nose was inches from her own and his eyes boiled to a glow. "How dare you turn your back to me and walk away again! It's not my fault that you never seemed interested, especially when you are always walking away! How am I suppose to know what's going on? Everytime I turn around I hear you're with someone else and yet you don't do as much as take a glance at me!" Veteran paused for a moment to get his bearings and to focus his thoughts. "I don't know what you want and you fail to make yourself clear. I'm sorry that you don't understand why I'm busy. I'm still taking care of my trouble-maker of a brother. Why can't you understand that?!"

"Because you didn't tell me," she said, her voice a harsh whisper. "I am not open with my feelings with anyone, I can't help it. It is just the way I am! I have been hurt one too many times and it makes me especially cautious!" She hadn't meant to add that last part and instantly wished she hadn't.

"You are not the only one that has lost those that were close to you." Veteran's voice was crisp and clear, but a quite whisper.

"I know," she said softly. "But I was afraid of losing another one."

Belle glanced over at the horizon, not sure what to do or say.

Belle felt her cheeks growing warm and turned her head slightly to look at him, her eyes wide.
