[Veins Of Opal]

Lucien reached out and quickly took the journal, feeling the aching place in his chest he usually felt every time he grabbed that notebook. He tossed it back beneath the seat, silent, trying to ignore the sound of Sigma crying. It brought back memories that made him want to scream and go on a rampage. So, not bothering to tie his hair back, he stuck the key into the ignition and began driving once again, focusing on the sounds of the cars, not the sounds of crying.

[Falls]

It took Sigma a few minutes to calm down into a small case of the post-crying hiccups. She watched the window absently, hardly noticing the cars and streetlights as they whizzed by. After a few ours of driving, she grew hungry enough to the point where she dared to turn back towards Lucien to grab the bag of beef jerky.

Lucien flicked his eyes to her as she grabbed the bag, then looked back to the road. Finally, he spoke; "How much did you read?" he questioned in a calm, icy tone, not looking towards her. He gripped the steering wheel quite tightly, tight enough that his knuckles were white, whether he was aware of it or not. He felt like he was a bottle ready to explode and shatter, harming everything near.

Sigma opened the bag and stared down at it for a while, allowing the silence to drag from the realms of awkward into painful. She felt ashamed for reading such personal, painful thoughts; even more ashamed because they were indirectly connected to her. "...I'm sorry," she whispered, her voice choked. No, she would NOT cry again. She was determined. Don't cry. Do NOT cry, you little...

Lucien was silent. Clearly she had read enough to know why he had such difficulty forcing himself to attack her. He glanced at her, the painful hole in his sternum growing as he saw the tears in her eyes. He swallowed, his adam's apple jerking as he did so. "Why?" he asked, his deep voice close to a growl. He wasn't truly angry at her, he had been furious until he saw the tears. Her voice hurt him to hear in such sadness. He bit the inside of his lip, focusing on the taste of the blood.

Sigma hesitated, a little confused. That was such an open-ended question. It could refer to a lot of things. She turned away from Lucien and stared out the window so that she wouldn't have to see his expression as she answered in several different ways. "Because I read you notebook. Because I thought I wouldn't find anything deeper than blood and gore in the book. Because I remind you of... her." She took a deep, calming breath and focused on a dirt speck on the window instead of Lucien's reflection.

Lucien was silent, his heart pounding so hard that it was as if it was booming like thunder. Lucien was silent for a good five minutes, glancing at Sigma every minute or so. His loose hair was stirred gently by the air conditioner, and even in a state of anger and sadness, the handsome assassin had a look about him that spoke silent novels. "Stop crying." Lucien growled, realizing how harsh and cruel it sounded, he difficultly added; "Please."

Sigma thought of about 3 different sarcastic responses, but bit them all back for Lucien's sake. "I did," was all she said, her voice heavy and weary from crying before. She sighed and wiped the remaining tears from her eyes and cheeks with the back of her hand to finalize her state of not-crying before remembering the jerky and popping one into her mouth. Swallowing that little bit of food was quite possibly the hardest thing she'd physically done in quite a while.

"Ask questions, if you must. You've already delved into my business." Lucien growled as he drove, seriously contemplating just turning on music to drown out all conversation. He noticed that they weren't extremely far from where they'd have to get on horseback to travel, and he gave a weary sigh.

[Falls]

Sigma flinched, visibly flinched, at Lucien's statement. She set her jaw and stared out the front window, still quite unwilling to look over at him. "I've had my fill, thanks," she mumbled softly. With a sigh she reached down and flipped on the radio, coming to the same desire for an absence of conversation as Lucien had. She left the music on the station it turned on to and turned it up just loud enough to make talking over it a little hard.
