------>cinder rubbed the back of her neck as the elevator glided downward. the machine hummed smoothly, sending a slight buzzing sensation through her body. her eyes stayed glued to the floor as awkwardness filled the gap between the tributes. she hadn't dared speak to mackey, let alone look at him, since the night before. though she could not remember much of what happened then, she knew something did. domitria had refused to explain anything of the evening. faolin simply laughed and giggled when cindara attempted to approach the subject. cinder hadn't mentioned it to mackey yet. did he even remember anything at all? her green eyes flickered to the side, catching a glance of the boy's shoes. it was the last day of training. tomorrow they would be sent to their death in the arena. they had to be completely focused today. maybe it was for the best she didn't say anything at all.
------>she had not taken a full step out of the elevator before something bad happened. reflexively, cinder shoved the person colliding with her body away from her with defensive strength. her breath caught as she watched the smaller girl fall to the floor in front of her. she had not meant to be that rough. her cheeks flushed red when other tributes as well as station officers turned to observe the scene. out of the corner of her eye she also noticed some peacemakers beginning to advance toward them. panic seized her being. no, it was an accident! she hadn't done anything wrong! cindara quickly crouched down and met eyes with the girl, extending her hand in an effort to mend the incident. "sorry, i didn't see you there." she grit her teeth and plastered on a smile. cinder hated apologizing. it was a sign of weakness, remorse. besides, it wasn't like she was the one who ran into someone. but with everyone watching the two, it seemed almost mandatory to say.
------>cinder was expecting some sort of an apology in return as she heaved the girl up. instead the younger tribute, who couldn't be more than thirteen years old, glared at her with malice. "watch it, blondie!" she spat. cinder was shocked. was this child serious? a new found anger replaced the tribute's previous anxiety. "excuse you?" she let her grip slid, sending the girl back crashing back on her butt. she towered over the smaller girl, easily becoming more intimidating. her fists clenched, green eyes flaming as they narrowed on the brunette. everything in her body was screaming 'hurt this girl'. nothing else mattered then. not punishment, not any sort of reason. the capitol already had a death wish tattooed to her soul. what worse things could they possibly do to her if she did it?

➳ mackey foxwood, the nice guy [ post 11 ]

    the clearest way
    into the universe
    is through a forest
    wilderness

s the elevator gilded downwards, mackey couldn't help but feel a sudden rush of excitement. something about it dazzled him. maybe because he could see from all the sides or maybe because he liked the motion. whatever it was, mackey wasn't afraid to admit that he'd love to play with it all day long. his eyes settled on cinder for a brief moment before his gaze followed her's down to the floor. did he do something wrong? the thought had been troubling him all morning. first domonitra was acting weird, then foalin giggled suspiciously, the other district seven mentors were odd too, but cindara too? they were like peanut butter and jelly on day two of training and now this? he thought that he'd be a little more then an allie in the games to cindara, but mackey guessed that he was mistaken. 'i'm just her allie' mackey quietly told himself. he accepted the thought, cindara and him were like friends the day before because that naturally is how it would of gone between them if they were back in district 7. but it's not district 7. the pieces were starting to piece together in his mind. 'cinder is readying herself for the games. by limiting her connections with me...it's probably for the better.' mackey thought.

the elevator soon came to a hault. as the doors opened, a small little girl collided with his district 7 allie but was quickly pushed to the ground thanks to cinder's quick reflexes. assuming that no harm must of really been done, he quickly forgot about it. but he was wrong. he stood behind cinder as the whole scene was blocking up the elevator door, walking past them now felt rude to him so he stayed behind like the gentle giant he was. watching cinder help the little girl up- 'what was her name? ah yes, darcy from district two. a tiny little twelve year old.' mackey recalled to himself. missing in on the words exchanged between the two girls, it really caught him off guard when he saw cindara's grip slide away from the little girl's hand. a little alarmed, his eyes immediately scanned cinder's face, taking note to her balled fists. slyly sliding himself next to cinder, he very gently placed a warm hand on her shoulder. trying to find her eyes for a second with his forest green ones, he leaned over to cinder's ear and whispered, "don't do this here, cinder" gesturing to her, trying to remind her of the peacekeepers. "you can do whatever you want to her in the arena..." mackey paused for a moment, trying to think of something not so violent. "punch her face to your deepest desires, just not now." mackey's last two words sounding a little desperate, trying his best efforts to calm the situation down. it didn't look so good when a girl like cindara was towering over a little girl. he was unknowingly already watching cinder's back, even if they aren't even in the arena yet.

------>cindara felt mackey's hand touch her shoulder. it sent a wave of electricity through her body, one that fried the veil of rage that been clouding her better judgement. she turned her head and blinked at mackey. the green palates of their eyes melted into one another in some sort of an unspoken understanding. he was right. this wasn't going to get her anywhere. if anything it was going to make things worse for her as a pawn in the capitol's games. cinder still didn't like the idea of apologizing to the younger tribute, especially since she wasn't the one to do anything wrong. but she decided it was better to swallow her pride than to make things worse for herself in the arena.
------>by the time cindara turned her head back around to face darcy, the twelve year old had gotten up from the ground and was standing arms crossed, hip popped out, head cocked, with a finger tapping impatiently on her forearm. a diva from district two, what a surprise. cindara gritted her teeth and let out a breath, my bad." she gave the blonde a faux smile and reached for mackey's wrist. she tried her best to ignore the wave of electricity that rushed through her body when she touched him, but found it rather difficult. she scanned the large warehouse-looking room for nothing in particular, just a way out of the situation she was in. instinctively she headed toward something familiar, something safe. she didn't let go of mackey's wrist until they were secure in front of a large rack where an array of axes and hatchets hung proudly.
------>she didn't want to catch eyes with any of the other tributes, and she certainly didn't want to look at mackey; not with the rush his touch gave her still buzzing through her. she leaned on the nearby steel table. her fingernail clicked as it made contact with the smooth metal. 'what had we come here to do, anyway?' she side glanced toward the rack of weapons. 'train, that's right.' she pushed herself off of the table and took a few steps to the right. "um, thanks." she said as she rummaged through the rack. the rush he had given her had finally begun to sizzle out. "for back there. for keeping me from doing anything stupid."

her touch was so comforting... in a weird way. the guy would have flinched, but it felt like her firm grip on his hand was like the gravity that kept him grounded to earth. plus, the little girl from two was a demon trapped inside a twelve year old. mackey mindlessly followed cindara to their little unspoken safe zone- by the rack where the axes were. he could almost smell a fine layer of sawdust on the glittering, deadly blades. but of course, it was only his imagination acting up. there was a slow release of pressure on his wrist, making him feel rather disappointed when cindara let go. she was still angry with him about something he couldn't even recollect, but it didn't keep him from wanting to be near her all the time. cindara was like a living piece of home, a little morphine for his burning homesickness. and he loved sniffing her. whenever she walked by, he always caught the faint, but delightfully good smell of pine trees in her silky hair. mackey on the other hand smelled like wood shavings and mushrooms. not to mention cindara's adorable height; the blonde reached just to mackey's shoulder, just perfect for him to embrace and lay his head on top of her's...and sniff her hair all day.

green eyes settling on her face, they quickly darted away and found the axes to view instead- not as nice as cindara's face, but better then an unapproving scowl. his tan fingers ran along the wooden handle of a well crafted hatchet, gaze lingering past cindara for a millisecond before catching a cold, emerald watch on him. it was the sinister eye of the girl from one, jewel. she was as good as cindara's twin: same blonde hair, height, build (although she might be a bit curvier then cinder), and graceful stride. except, jewel's green eyes radiated a rather malefic feel, very un-district seven like. the career flashed a flirty smile, her teeth too unnaturally white to begin with. in return, mackey frowned, his eyes floating over to the little freckles that dotted cinder's nose. "um, cindara." he was back to a fullname basis with her, "would you like to start with some target practice?", disregarding what she had just mentioned. mackey prayed she would accept his offer quickly, trying to create as much distance between cindara and jewel as possible. as much as the two were very similar looking, they definitely didn't get along.

[ hahaha. interesting thought there. though, i love goldfish. their soo cute! as well as our little charries. <3 ]

------>she flinched in disappointment when she heard her full name. just moments ago mackey was calling her by her affectionate nickname. now he was using full names? had she offended him by grabbing his wrist? her cheeks suddenly grew hot. cindara wasn't one to care about what others thought of her, but there was something different about mackey. something that made her not want to mess up around him. and now she had messed up around him twice today. it wasn't near enough to make them even for the night before, but it still proved enough for cindara to mentally kick herself.
------>she brushed her fingers over her lips. his mouth had been on hers. he'd kissed her. a kiss he probably didn't remember. she stole a glance at his perfectly tan face and perfectly shaped lips and perfectly green eyes. no, scratch that. of course he didn't remember. he was drunk. and, and she was drunk... ish. 'dont be an idiot,' she scolded herself. he'd kissed her while under the influence of whatever that milky white stuff in the cabinet had been. of course it didn't mean anything. 'but it felt so...' so what? its not like cinder had anything to compare it to. she had never kissed anybody before. or rather, gotten kissed. the spark it gave her was something she hadn't forgotten. no matter how much she told herself to.
------>it sucked. cindara had thought one of her strengths in the games was the fact that she had no ties to any of these kids. so it would be easy for her to think of them as things and not people. but mackey had wrecked that strategy for her the moment he shook her hand at the reaping. and now, thanks to their erratic escort faolin, the other tributes' identities were forever drilled into her brain. she had no idea how she was going to kill these people. or how she would be able to live with herself afterward.
------>'would you like to start with some target practice?' cindara's hand, which had been stroking the fine woodsmanship on the axes hanging from the rack, dropped to her side. the tension in mackey's question hadn't exactly been concealed. she sucked in a breath and put on a 'thirty seconds of courage' face and turned to look at her district partner. their eyes met, but what mackey had been looking at before didn't go without notice. because whatever it was, it was clear mackey didn't want cindara to see. curiosity eventually took over, sending cindara rocking on the balls of her feet to see past mackey, who's height made things ever so harder for her to see past. in an instant her eyes locked with another's. jewel moorebucks. her platinum blonde hair and striking emerald eyes were't exactly subtle or forgetful. her gaze on cindara didn't falter as a boy began obnoxiously spearing a practice dummy in front of her, which made the cynical blonde uneasy. what interest could a career possibly have with two burnouts from district seven? cindara quickly focused back on mackey, doing her best in pretending jewel's stare wasn't burning through mackey's back and into her. "target practice sounds good." her voice quivered a little towards the end of the sentence. her thirty seconds of courage was up and she found herself once again averting mackey's eyes.

she was averting her eyes from mackey as much as he was averting hers. just one more day in this training center and then they'd be polished up for interviews. as difficult as it was in training right now, especially with the cinder situation right now, he'd favor staying here then moving a day closer to killing a bunch of kids- let alone allow the imprudent styling team 'make him handsome'. the horrors the capital actually called 'beauty'. when would they realize that the rest of the world would turn their noses away from looking like a bunch of cartoon characters. just let mackey be the stylist and he'll fix everything up, and make himself presentable for his meeting with caesar flickerman. of course, he was just kidding on becoming a stylist. if it was up to anyone, mackey was certainly not a fashionista. he could barely keep up with the fads back in district seven, not that they had many anyway. the brunette had a pretty atrocious sense of style when it came to looking 'nice'. everyday wear? no problem. the outdoorsy look? painless. but when it came to the nicer occasions, he was a recipe for disaster. mackey could still remember the countless times he'd let his sisters pick out what he wore. first he'd try on an outfit of his own invention to have everyone scoff at him, but then his two sisters, jen and jamie would fix him up quite nicely. it was the good old times. now that he was hundreds of miles away from his family, he couldn't just rely on the capital freaks. the boy was quite reluctant even for the opening ceremony when they painted his whole body a shimmery brown and forced him to wear a leafy-skirt-thing. according to domitria, it was a hit. but to mackey, it was arduous to accept fashion advice from cartoon characters. the thought crossed his mind a couple of times to ask for cinder's inspection when he was all dressed up, but he shoved the idea to the back of his mind. he had a haunch that his blonde companion was still pretty angry at him for something he can't recollect. mackey sighed, reckoning domitria's opinion will have to do.

'target practice sounds good' cindara had said, and mackey could have not been more allayed from the thought of practicing with the district one brat. he was all too happy to get away from the cold-eyed beauty, mackey could have almost skipped to the targeting station, a pinch too eager to start. he watched jewel from the corner of his eye, keeping a close watch on what her next move might be. mackey's fingers traced a small, but lethal looking blade. with one swipe of his hand, he picked up three and handed them to cinder with the butt end for her to hold. jewel made her way to the neighboring station to keep a close eye on the pair. figures, she wouldn't dare to get out shined by the district seveners, but once the two showed any sign of struggle, she'd be sure to waltz in their way to show them up. "you ready?", flashing a shy smile.

[ maybe she'll forgive him over a round of target practice. ]

------>cindara followed mackey to the station lined with targets. she didn't want to look back at jewel, but her pride forced her head to eventually turn. there was a new person by her side. a boy. a tall, broad, muscular boy who couldn't possibly have come from anywhere other than a career district. it didn't take long for cindara to match the face to the name. jaythorne. zayden jaythorne. cinder recalled he had gotten a score of ten from the gamemakers. expected and typical of someone from one, but what made the feat memorable was how one of cindara's stylists had swooned over him while the scores were allotted to the public. swooned over an eighteen year old murderer. soon to be murderer anyway. cindara had to admit, he was handsome, but...

------>"oh couldn't you just eat him up?!" primauve, cindara's head stylist, gawked at the holographic image of the district one tribute plastered on the living room television screen.
------>cindara shook her head and scoffed, "he's a di-"
------>faolin squeaked, censoring the girl's not so polite description of the career while giving her a tight 'ladies don't speak like that' smile.
------>"jerk." she returned the escort's faux smile along with an eye roll.
------>"oh personality doesn't matter!" primauve insisted, smittenly waving her hands. "you can be the most detestable boy alive. if you're good looking, girls will still find you attractive."
------>the dirty blonde just stared at the woman. her brows furrowed. "i don't find killing people attractive"
------>with a disregarding giggle primauve continued, "well dear, here in the capitol we strive for equality of all- no matter what your past actions may label you as."
------>"so what you're saying is that it's okay to be a murderer?" cinder growled. and that's when, all of a sudden, everything fell into place in her mind. according to panem, it was. it really was. paraded around like heroes, that's what all the victors really were. murderers. even domitria.
------>cinder side glanced at her mentor. she tried picture her as a young girl. soft eyes, innocent. unluckily picked for these games just as cindara herself had been. but the seventeen year old found it hard. domitria was kind toward mackey and cindara, but she could be rigid toward others. she wasn't as old as she seemed either. her cold eyes were just worn and tired, giving her that aged appearance. her cold eyes... they had been made that way. cold. cinder wondered what blood the woman had forever stained on her hands. who's blood. was that to be cindara's same fate if she were to end up the victor of these games? hardened and cold, stuck in this godforsaken world of glorified murderers against her will, forced to watch child after child be slain on her watch because she couldn't successfully teach them how to keep from death?

------>cindara thought of zayden again. zayden and jewel. 'since when did you become such a pansy?' cinder silently scolded herself. back home she would never let someone stare her down, make her feel so small, like those snobby careers were doing to her now. that was the one thing cindara hated more than anything. being made small. being shrunk and scrutinized. she wouldn't let zayden and jewel win this mental game like that. she couldn't.

------>"you ready?" his shy smile made her stomach turn. god, what was she doing? mackey didn't know what he did. what good was punishing him for something he didn't even remember? she was his last connection of home, as he was hers. he didn't deserve to be treated so poorly in his last days...
------>cindara could have screamed. oh god, oh god, oh god. her face flushed white. how could she ever think that? saliva turned to rocks in her mouth as she swallowed hard. she had to really keep herself from becoming lightheaded. oh man. she didn't want mackey to die. he didn't deserve to. out of everyone here, including herself, she believed he was the most deserving one to go home.
        ------>home...
------>only one of them could go home.
------>all sentiments aside, cindara was a survivor.
------>if the end came and it was just him and her left...
------>could she really give up her life for another?
        ------>would she?
------>she quickly shoved the idea to the back of her mind.
------>'not now. dont think, dont think...'

------>cindara nodded mindlessly and took the knives handed to her. she side swept jewel and zayden with a prudent glance before focusing on the target ahead. what was it? ten, fifteen feet away? she held two of the blades in her left hand and one in her right (she was right handed). of all the options he had, mackey chose daggers instead of being practical and grabbing hatchets. why couldn't it have been something, anything the two already knew how to use? what with zayden and jewel and god knows who else were watching them, showing off wouldn't have hurt. but it's not like she could trade them in now. so cindara did what cindara did best- she made due. she curled her fingers over the hilt of the dagger and squeezed tightly. 'don't miss.' she opened her grip and let gravity pull the blade downward, but hooked her finger through the loop of the butt just before it fell. she swung it back and fourth, pensively bouncing the blade. in a swift movement the blade was over her shoulder, chucked forward, and flying out of her grasp toward the target. it hit the foam board with a satisfying thwack, second ring out from the middle. not bad. but not as good as cindara would've hoped either. the next two she threw landed near the first. precise but not accurate.

------>jewel and zayden were still watching them, but cindara found that as soon as she stopped looking back, their stares were not as unnerving as before. instead she looked toward mackey with a defrosting smile on her face and playful glint in her eye.
------>"your turn. go on. lets see you do better, lumberjack."

[ tryin out this new double space paragraph thing... haha i dunno how i feel about it. ]
