The Valley of Astalon has long been home to feral horses, it's luscious expanses of forest and field, bountiful
land for numerous herds and groups. The herds and land in which they live on have always been protected
by the wrath of humans, with only the occasional mustang roundup. They have lived a quiet life. Until dis
aster struck. Violent rain and winds struck, ripping trees from earth & flooding once-prosperous meadows.
The horses waited for the rain to stop, praying that their lives could be spared. Herds were separated and
horses were displaced. When the rain finally stopped, the dark realization set in; they were alone. Many
had been lost in the chaos, without any family or companions. But that wasn't the last of the chaos. The
horses from surrounding stables around the valley had all been abandoned, with humans leaving without a
trace. Now, the horses most find their place in this chaotic world; and face the disasters that will come.

Listed below are a series of vocalizations and body language commonly used by horses.

      Vocalizations.
Neighs and whinnies ── which a horse uses to announce, "I'm here!" & to acknowledge the presence of another horse.
Nickers ── often used by a mare to encourage her foal, or can be used in greeting.
Squeals ── can be part of a threat display or out of fear/surprise.
Snorts ── horses sometimes use to sound an alarm, such as when a strange animal suddenly comes too close.

      Ears.
Pricked ears ── means that the horse is interested and/or alert.
Ears slightly forward ── means the horse is at ease.
Flattened ears ── means the horse is upset or in distress.
One ear back ── the horse is probably listening to something behind them.
Ears set to the side ── means that they are relaxed and/or focused on something.
Flicking ears ── a sign of alertness or worry.

      Legs.
Pawing/Stamping ── stamping or pawing can mean the horse feels bored, frustrated or nervous, or a mix of all.
Splayed legs ── means that the horse is about the run, or is thinking about running.
Leg lifting ── this can be a threat to other horses that the horse might kick out.
Cocked leg ── this means that when the front of their hoof is on the ground, the horse is at ease and relaxed.

      Head.
Head held high ── shows that the horse is alert and/or curious.
Snaking ── snaking is when a horse (typically a stallion) lowers their head and moves it from side to side, like a snake. This is a sign of aggression.
Lowered head ── a lowered head shows that a horse is peaceful, and they feel calm.

      Tail.
Tail swatting ── this often means that a horse is annoyed or upset.
Raised tail ── a raised tail usually means a horse is attentive and content.
Clamped tail ── a clamped down tail oftentimes means that a horse is fearful or worried.
