The male wolf didn't actually leap, in fact, it was just shown. As to what the female was thinking, he didn't do it. And he was already in close contact with that cat, he was surprised the other hadn't struck his face already. His hind legs pushed himself forward, not in a leap, no. His fur still scraped the ground. His jaws were open as he tried to lock onto something, really anything. He most likely would.
