"You ain't nothing better than a filthy pig thief, Floyd Hatfield!"
Two households, both alike in dignity,
In the fair South, where we lay our scene,
From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.
"Sam and Parris McCoy murdered my kin!"
тнє ѕтoяу
Wiliiam 'Devil Anse' Hatfield deserted from the Confederate army, leaving his friends and comrades behind to die. One of his closest friends, Randolph McCoy 'Ole Ran'll' was captured by the Union and sent to a prison camp in Ohio, only one state away from his home in Kentucky. Randolph was the only soldier in his outfit that wasn't killed by the Union. While Devil Anse Hatfield reunited with his wife Levicy, started a family and managed a successful logging company, Ole Ran'll was starving in a Union prison camp. Randolph had a long time to think about Devil Anse, and to stir and brew a hatred for Devil Anse and all his kin.
When Randolph was finally released from the camp and returned to his own family, Devil Anse tried to be friendly towards Randolph, but Randolph wasn't having it.
This wasn't a feud. It was a misunderstanding between two men. There was a precarious peace along the Tug River border of West Virginia and Kentucky. Cousins of the Hatfields married cousins of the McCoys.
However, in 1865, Asa Harmon McCoy was murdered by a Hatfield uncle, the evil Jim Vance and his gang of marauders, the Logan Wildcats. No one was charged for the death of Harmon, and that infuriated the McCoys.
13 years later, 13 years of unevents, the death of Harmon nearly forgotten, Floyd Hatfield was traveling to slaughter his pigs when he met Randolph McCoy, and McCoy saw his mark on the ear of one of the pigs Hatfield had in his trailer.
Floyd Hatfields’s trial took place in McCoy territory but was presided over by a cousin of Devil Anse. It hinged on the testimony of star witness Bill Staton, a McCoy relative married to a Hatfield. Staton testified in Floyd Hatfield’s favor, and the McCoys were infuriated when Floyd was cleared of the charges against him. Two years later, Staton was violently killed in a fracas with Sam and Paris McCoy, nephews of Randolph. Sam stood trial for the murder but was acquitted for self-defense reasons.
Then, to make matters worse, on Election Day in 1880, Johnse Hatfield, the son of Devil Anse, and Roseanna McCoy, the golden child of Randolph McCoy, met and fell in love. They disappeared for hours, and when they came back to the voting place, Roseanna's brothers had gone home to tell their Pa that they could not find Roseanna.
Johnse and Roseanna didn't know what to do. Johnse offered to let Roseanna stay with them, so Roseanna spent the night with the Hatfields, in Devil Anse's own home. He was not pleased, and neither was Ole Ran'll when Johnse returned Roseanna the next day. Roseanna told her Pa that she and Johnse were in love, and Ran'll disowned his favorite daughter.
Roseanna went back to live with the Hatfields, and she and Johnse planned to get married. However, Levicy kicked Roseanna out of the house when she discovered that Roseanna was pregnant. Neither woman informed Johnse of Roseanna's pregnancy, and Levicy told Johnse it was for the best that Roseanna wasn't living with them anymore. He didn't believe her and still wanted to marry Roseanna, but he had no idea of her whereabouts.
Sally McCoy knew that Randolph would be blind with rage when he discovered Roseanna's pregnancy, (with a Hatfield, born and bred, no less!) so Sally sent Roseanna away to live with her Aunt Betty.
Johnse went to the bar one night to drink away his sorrows about Roseanna, and he said something out loud about wanting to find her. Roseanna's less polite, more cunning, ruthless cousin, Nancy, brought Johnse home and seduced him, because he thought she was Roseanna. She informed him of Roseanna's pregnancy and he was twice as determined to find Roseanna.
NOW
When Randolph and his five sons discovered Roseanna's compromising situation, Raldolph went mad with grief and threw out Roseanna's things into a muddy hole. Her brothers found Johnse, trapped him in a cabin, and are going to shoot him at sunrise. Roseanna's youngest brother, Bud, ran out to inform Roseanna that their other brothers had Johnse and her going to kill him. Roseanna ran to Devil Anse for help, and Devil Anse and Roseanna are standing outside the cabin, getting ready to go in and free Johnse.
