"Gran says it's alright if up you bury her under the oak by the fence line," said Gannet- or Patric, as he had been recognized. Someone had brought a length of canvas from the ship while Ingo and Indigo dressed the navigator, and the crew had wrapped her in it and put a chain and lock around it as was pirate's custom. On the ocean it would have caused the body to sink; on land it was an homage to the Sonja's loyalty to the ship and sea. Patric and Liam had, previously, taken two shovels and cleared a hole five feet deep and seven long, to account for Sonja's excessive height. Now Indigo stood over the grave, holding the navigator's battered bible. Slowly she knelt, placing the book on the canvas wrapping over the navigator's chest. "Safe journey, my friend," she whispered, wishing she could cry but physically unable to. There just wasn't enough sadness in her; she could hardly believe that Sonja was dead.

Jack stood next to his captain, staring with unfocused eyes at the now-covered body of the loyal navigator. In his arms he held the clothes she had died in, although they were damp as he had washed them the best he could to get rid of the bloodstains so they could be burried with Sonja. All the while he had been gipping, very near to retching again. Closing his eyes, he breathed deeply, trying to calm himself as he heard Indigo's words. Snapping his eyes open, he crouched beside his captain, placing the rags next to the canvas sheet.
"Goodbye, Sonja. I hope there are stong winds for you on the over side." His voice broke half way through the sentence and he hung his head; Sonja had been loyal, hardworking.... She hadn't deserved this.

Ingo knelt by the grave just as Indigo had. Ingo remained silent, she couldn't help the shivers running down her spine. It all felt so wrong. Ingo's head was hung, her hands spread by herside as if she were bowing yet still kneeling to Sonja. In Ingo's left hand was the dagger Sonja had presented to her a long time ago, "Make good use of that dagger- snakewood and bluestone are a deadly combination. I hope you find your parents, but don't spend your whole life searching." Sonja had said, she remembered it like it were yesterday, but yesterday was gone and for Sonja there'd neve be another tomorrow. Ingo pulled herself up from the ground and took a step back from the grave. She pulled a piece of cord from around her neck. It held a pendant, a wood-carved replica of Sonja's sword. Ingo held it to her heart then placed it in the grave with what once held the soul of her friend.

Quietly, Melody stepped forwards and unwrapped the scarf that hung around her neck. It was once of her most prized possessions, but it could be replaced; there would never be another navigator like Sonja. Folding up the brightly-dyed cloth, she laid it across the canvas bundle that sat at the bottom of the grave. "Cap'n?" she inquired, almost inaudibly. "I thought up a few words-" Indigo glanced at her sidelong and nodded, giving permission. Melody cleared her throat, then recited the short poem she had made up in order to stop herself from thinking too hard about her crewmate's murder.
"Open your eyes, look to the skies,
See the sun and the moon and the stars.
Let each day take your breath away
So you never forget who you are."

Then, because the moment seemed to warrant some kind of finality, she added on an extra couplet.
"Try to think of the best as we lay her to rest,
And remember that death's never far."

She bowed her head and, thinking of the cross that Sonja had worn around her neck, added "Amen."

Jack
With his head bowed, the cook stood and gave a brief nod to Melody and his captain before backing away a little. The urge to be sick was rising within him and he didn't want it to happen all over Sonja's body.
Clenching and unclenching his hands, Jack bit down on the inside of his cheek hard, trying to remain calm and stop the urge.

When Gannet saw that everyone was done with gifts and eulogies, he picked up his spade and began shoveling dirt into the grave. There was no use postponing the burial for any longer, and Gannet had a bit of a thing about dead bodies. They just gave him the creeps, maybe because he had almost been one. The woman with blue hair, the captain, she had attacked him. Tried to kill him, maybe, but she was at a disadvantage. She said he had been a pirate, and he didn't know if he believed her, but it was something. She said his name was Patric O'Hara, but the words didn't mean anything to him. Since the day he woke up on the coastline he had called himself Gannet. He knew that was the name of the birds overhead, although he couldn't recall just how he knew. He was a bad fisherman but he could read and write, so that was something, although there wasn't much use for the finer crafts in a poor fishing village. He didn't know if he liked the thought of having been shot and tossed into the ocean, but that was pirates for you. Nonsensical.

Ingo hung her head and murmured a few things, none of them legible to anyone around. She just didn't want to believe it, all that had happened, she knew becoming a pirate wouldn't be easy, but all this death recently, it had been horrific, terrible, and just sickening. What made her stomach churn the most was that it couldn't have been suicide. Sonja wouldn't do that, Sonja had no reason to do that. But what could one stupid little orphan prove? Sonja only ever used blades? Well woop de doo, that was totally going to be a case-solver, because everyone else just assumed Sonja would have a dagger. Ingo had felt like something, like someone,w hen Sonja was there, the woman had been like a mother, and a sister to the girl, like family, but now all Ingo felt like was a small, insignificant little orphan, even with her position of first-mate, even with all of Liam's kind words. She couldn't ever feel, well, useful. And she knew she was becoming sentimental, she always did around death, but she couldn't stop the battle emotions within her, she just became a pitiful child again. Slowly but surely she backed away from the grave, she didn't want to look at it much longer. She turned around slowly, wiped her nose and eyes and went back inside.

When the grave was filled with dirt, Gannet and Liam stepped back. The blacksmith took both spades and followed the Irishman back towards the house, speaking to him as they went. "I haven't been on the crew very long, and I'm wondering, why did the cap'n try to attack you? She called you... Patrick?" The red-haired man shook his head, and corrected him. "For one thing, that's not my name. I'm called Gannet, and I'm not a pirate. I've lived here as long as I can remember." Of course, his memory stopped short about half a year past, but that was not the point. "And another thing, even if that was my name, you're pronouncing it wrong. Patric. Less k on the end, and ya roll the r just a tiny bit." Liam shrugged his thick shoulders, deciding it was best not to press the subject.

"Ingo, stop right there. Not a one of us is leavin' this graveside until we figure out how an' why my navigator died." Indigo would have crossed her arms, if she had them. As it was, she put her right hand on her waist and kept her eyes on the crew. "Let's lay out the facts," she said, then glanced at Melody. "You were one of the first to see her." The petite girl took in a deep, shaky breath, then curled and uncurled her fingers. Finally, she said "Sonja was clubbed, first in the back of the head, and then across the temples. Afterwards, something was shoved into the wound. A stick, maybe, or the barrel of a pistol." She closed her eyes, grimacing. "It's a torture method I've only seen a couple of times. In jails. Tortuga, I think."

Jack
Jack sucked in a breath, trying not to be sick. Slowly, but surely, the urge died away and he swallowed hard, looking at his captain. "Captain, if I have permission to speak...." They all knew, except her, that it was Tessa who had raised the alarm. That meant she had to be the last person to see her... Tessa had said that they had fought...
