Melody noticed the loose cannons at about the same time that Emerald did, and raced across the deck to start tying them down ."Hold tight, me hearties!: cried Sonja from the bow, in full pirate swing now as she grasped the wheel with both hands. A gust of wind hit the ship, pounded it, screamed against the rails and the people standing on the deck. Then came the rain, lashing about, shrieking against the wooden planks as they groaned against the roiling sea. Waves splashed heavily against the sides of the ship, coming over the rails, soaking everything and everyone better than the rain had. The air was filled with the hiss and sting of salty spray, and above them roared the storm like a mighty beast of vengeance.

Emerald started to run over as well but got knocked over as the huge wave crashed down onto the deck. She stood, shivering a little now, and wiped the wet hair from her face. She grabbed two more ropes and rushed over to help Melody. She threw one to Melody, hoping she had aimed right considering she could barely see two feet in front of her. She half fell half knelt down by a canon and unraveled the rope. She wiped some rain from her eyes again and then started tying the canon down.

Melody caught the rope and lashed it to the railing, knotting it expertly before throwing it over the nearest cannon and tying it down as tightly as possible. A giant wave crashed over the deck and she coughed, spluttered, then wiped the stinging brine from her eyes and flicked her soaked braid back over her shoulder. "How does she know where she's going?!" cried the quartermaster over the noise of the storm. "Sonja, I mean!"

Emerald coughed and choked on the water that had entered her open mouth. "I *cough cough cough* don't know!" she called over the howling of the wind and rain. She wiped her eyes again and tried to finish off the last knot. Her shaking fingers couldn't hold the rope and the lack of light certainly didn't help. She finally got it and looked over towards the next one. "I just hope she gets us to land soon!" she said as she tried walking to the next one. A huge wave came at the boat from the front, making the boat lurch back. Emerald lost her footing again and flew forward, hitting her head on the hard canon. She cried out and rubbed her head. "Stupid boat!" she complained and started to tie.

Bree grabbed the old rope laying beside her and slung it over her shoulder, as she carefully crossed the deck the rough waves began to grow bigger and crash upon the ship and she slipped on the wet boards. She quickly picked herself up and continued on towards the cannons to help tie them down, those things could be very dangerous if they were rolling about the deck. Another large wave soared over head, soaking Bree and the floors.

The almighty wave had crashed over the ship, sending spray and debris flying. Bilge and slime gthered on anything it could touch, but Ingo was going on strong. She scrambled over to the wheel, but as the boat shook, so did she, she slid, less than gracefully to a cannon. Seeing an opportunity, she made to tie it down, but the next wave almost threw her over, grabbing on to the edge with her shivering fingers she tried to pull herself back up. She tried and tried, feeling her fingers getting raw. With one last heave she managed to get her legs back over. Just in time too, another wave and crash of thunder sent her rolling along the deck and into the other side of the ship. She desperately got to her knees, then finally she regained her balance, and stumbled to her feet, her breathing was fast and her vision was impaired, but at least she, and the rest of the crew, were surviving.

They could feel it below deck. Rodney was keeping a brave face and betty admired him for this, but it was hard for them both to keep upright and keep Indigo that way too. Most items had been tied down in here, that was Rodney's work, but the people could not be any more vulnerable. As the waves crashed they all juddedered and slid about a little. Water was dripping idly through the ceiling, but with every wave the flow became heavier. There was nothing they could do but hope the crew were doing well up there.

Melody grunted as a wave rolled the ship, trapping her between a sliding cannon and the rail of the ship, but she shoved her shoulder against the metal and forced it back just an inch so that she could wriggle out of the crushing gap and tie the thing down properly. The storm raged on about them, screaming through the tied-up sails and thrashing like a beast in its death throes.

Sonja checked her compass and turned the wheel so that the wind was at their backs, throwing the Maiden forwards at twice, even thrice the speed she went normally, even with the wind in her sails. Rain plastered her dark blond hair to her neck and face, then whipped it across her vision as the wind changed for a moment. She turned the wheel again, always keeping the storm behind them, letting it blow them forwards life a leaf before a gale.

As Ingo opened her mouth to call to Melody another wave crashed. With the force of it, she was slammed into the deck, her face and mouth plastered with slime and water. She managed to slide up to her feet, slamming the cannons in and tying them as fast as she could. They were nearly all down, but nearly wasn't good enough. The ship rocked with every blow, and the sail howled with every gust. Stumbling and sliding was an understatement, but they'd get through this.

Emerald finished tying down the third canon and grabbed another rope. She started towards another when she slipped on a piece of seaweed. She fell flat on her face, then when another wave hit the ship she got washed all the way over to the other side of the boat. She sat up, wiping the hair and water from her face. She stood, her kneees feeling a little weak, and trudged back over. She finally tied down the canon and scrambled over to another.

Melody tied down the last cannon and huddled behind it, watching the rain dripping down the cold, black metal and feeling it lash against the exposed back of her neck. She didn't know where Sonja was steering them to, or how long it would be until the storm abated- she would just have to wait it out. "Ride out the storm", as it were.
