Adèle blushed; it was going to be 1911 in three short months. And in December, she would turn eighteen. She smiled. “I like pumpkin, too,” she said politely. She started walking down the sidewalk; she had a stop to make at a certain Italian restaurant called Bella Notte, for a payment.

Sam happily walked with her. He breathed in the cool Autumn scent. A small rusty orange leaf landed on his hand. He laughed and brushed it off. "I love Autumn."

Adèle nodded absently. “I do, too,” she said as they passed Bella Notte. She glanced inside to see her friend Antonio. “Tony!” she shouted. The boy with black hair smacked his head on the bottom of the umbrella while he was taking an order, startled.

Sam turned to see who Tony was. He walked with Adele. He smiled at the restaurant. "Bella Notte," he said. There was a restaurant called Bella Notte in his old neighborhood.

Adèle frowned and padded into the restaurant. Boots came later; she had a beautiful, dark brown, sheepskin pair that she’d had to sew the soles back on to and expand. She smiled, knowing Tony would give her what she needed. The tall, Italian boy grinned and pushed a small parcel across the counter to Adèle, who regarded it with calculating, silvery-green eyes. She glanced up at him and he turned his face. Adèle laughed and gave his cheek a peck. “Paid?” she asked, still giggling. Tony nodded and wiped his forehead with a towel before venturing back into the kitchens.

Sam stood next to Adele. She was...beautiful. Her grace and happy personality....Wow.

Adèle turned to Sam. “We’d better get that coffee,” she suggested lightly. “Synagogue—for me—starts in about two hours.”

"Alright," Sam said. He walked out of the store and walked toward the cafe.
