xxx"Right, I'm leaving for work now. Help yourself to anything in the fridge, Sammy. Oh, but save some of that salad you made last night for me, okay?" Ruben Seale rose from his spot at the breakfast table, closing a thick scifi book he was in the middle of reading. He reached for his keys, which he had lately began misplacing all over the house. His son smiled at him, shaking his head. "Your keys are in your pocket, Dad. You put them there when you came downstairs." Sammy's father gave him a sheepish grin.
xxx"Righto. Hey, I'll be staying a littler longer at work today. There's an author signing going on. She wrote a few great thrillers. Wanna come?" Sammy smiled again and shook his head politely.
xxx"Sorry, I can't. I'm meeting up with a friend later and then I'm picking out colors for the upstairs bathroom. Mom wanted me to paint it something different, remember?" Sammy's dad laughed and mumbled something about flowers, then waved bye once again. After the door closed behind him, Sammy pulled out his phone and dialed a number. It rang for a few seconds, then the other end of the line picked up. "Hey, are you still on for 12 o'clock?"

xxx i bit my lip, watching as people i knew oozed in through the doors: kyle, with her amazing hair that i've always been jealous of. i stared at it, wishing i could dye mine. i hated having brown hair; it was just so common. a couple of times i thought about dyeing it pink or something, just to stand out, but i didn't want to seem like i was an attention seeker. i sighed, playing with my muffin, then i glanced at the stack of books. i had a lot of reading to catch up on, i realized. i reached for the book on top: the great gatsby. with a smile, i leaned back in my chair and cracked it open to the first page.
xxx normally, i'd be reading a mile an hour, but i couldn't concentrate. my eyes kept drifting to the door. last week, while i was out and about, i'd discovered this amazing tree in this little clearing. it was in the middle of a small forest about a mile or two away, but if i dropped off some books i could get there on foot quickly enough. i bit my lip before getting to my feet and struggling to hold all of my 13 books, laptop, coffee, and muffin. i had to take achingly tiny steps. with each one i was terrified that gone with the wind would slip off the top of my pile with all it's 1,000 page glory and whack someone on the top of the head. i really couldn't afford to get sued, or stuck in jail for killing someone accidentally. i grinned, hiding my face in my books so nobody could see. i was already enough of a freak to everyone, and being seen practically crawling through starbucks, grinning, would definitely not help my case.

xxxAdrian is not a morning person. He doesn't understand how people can just pop outta bed and be all like, "Praise the Lord, it's Monday! I love mornings! Can't wait to get to work!" Well, maybe that's not exactly what morning people say and act, but whatever. He just isn't that type of person. He doesn't have a clock in his messy bedroom, let alone an alarm clock. He uses his phone when he wants the time, or looks at the clock on the oven, microwave, the clock in the kitchen, the clock in the living room. Point is, he wakes up whenever he wakes up on the weekends, is late for school almost everyday and loses track of time so easily. His parents have begged him (on their knees) to get an alarm clock. He came in one night and there was an alarm clock in a box on his bed. He gave it to Sammy for his birthday, even though Sammy's always on time for everything. Seriously though, he just doesn't like waking up to the sound of buzzing, obnoxious music, radio talk. No matter the consequences, he trusted his body to know when to wake up, which his parents had explained over and over was not a stable theory. Oh well. His mother always leaves early in the morning for the local elementary school and his father is usually flipping through children's books for inspiration. But Adrian is most always asleep in the morning, unless it's a school day. In that case, he would be up and ready and almost out the door by the time the tardy bell rung. For shame.
xxxBut this day was different. It was Busking Day. He had it marked on his calendar, every weekend, every month. He grabbed his old guitar, his favorite pick, and left the room in the clothes he had slept in. He liked playing in a lot of different places. In front of the library, where Uncle Ruben had actually encouraged him to first play. In front of the parks when there are events. Today would be in front of Starbucks. His local fans mostly consists of prepubescent tweens who secretly fangirls over his guyliner and older women who like his taste of music, if not his appearance. He grabbed a muffin off the kitchen counter, yelled bye to his dad, and left the house with his guitar case slung over his back.
xxxStarbucks.. It was extremely busy as usual on every morning. He knew the owner pretty well, as everyone who lived there did, and it was totally fine that he played right outside. He quickly set up and started with a slow acoustic song, concentrating on the words more than who was watching. After the end of the song, he glanced inside the shop, a bit surprised to see so many people he knew. There were at least four kids from his classes. He kinda hoped they wouldn't notice him.
