Malk Owls

Hi, I tried to look for information myself, but I can't find anything.
Do these owls have any, more or less, official names?

If not, was it ever explained what is on their chests? I always thought it was a horseshoe or a submarine window, but now I can't see it anymore and I started wondering what it is?
