What are tokens?

Okay, so I have an old account but just started playing again a couple of months ago. I've really been getting into trading, and something people mention all the time is "event tokens." Are they popular event pets? Items? A currency I have yet to find?
Usually, I can use context clues and sort of figure out what people mean, but I am completely stumped on this one. Help?

During our big events (Halloween, Easter, Summer), there are items called "tokens" that can be used to trade in for pets!

Banners show up on the bottom of certain pages, and clicking them gives you a token! During the event, there will be a special event adopt screen, with a number of pets and items you can adopt. Some of the pets are free, others you need to trade in some of your tokens for.

Tokens are never reused in future events, and are just like normal items once the event is over.
