Deleted messages

So, kind of a peculiar topic. I'm a very sentimental person! I like to keep things like first trade I ever made, first per I ever got, first gift I was given, etc!

Well, I used to save all my special messages (people who gifted me stuff, conversations with people, etc.) But I just now found out Marking a topic as "important" doesn't save it from being deleted. Figured this out because I was looking for a conversation where someone sent me an old tumblr post someone made about my account when I first joined. (Yeah that sounds weird without context, but it's a long story and very ironic. I laughed about it for a solid 3 months straight)

I can find the user who sent this to me & my message to them since it's in my "sent messages" area, but their messages to me were deleted, so they don't appear at all. The message I sent is from Sept. 03 2023, so a little over a year ago. My main inbox however, only go back to Sept. 29.

It really upsets me that it got deleted just a few messages ago and if I would've realized this sooner I could've saved it. I feel as though the main inbox used to be bigger? Or maybe settings got changed and they started deleting old messages...

Is there ANY possible way to get these messages back? Im pretty sure it's a, "once they're gone, they're gone," type of thing but I just wanted to make sure I've checked all possibilities first... Thanks so much for reading, appreciate any help/tips you have to offer!

Side note, while looking for a why to retrieve said messages, I found out the messaging system is actually a whole lot more extensive than I had known my entire... 6? 7? Years of being here. I've now created another folder called "special" so all the sentimental messages I can possibly salvage up can hopefully be saved for longer, and also changed settings to no longer delete old messages. (even though I don't remember this EVER being on. I feel as though I remember there being more than 7 pages of inbox) Wish I knew about this sooner :')

I'd suggest sending in a help ticket, it is sometimes possible to retrieve messages even if they have been deleted from your inbox, but its not always possible. If you send in a ticket we can check if we are able to retrieve this message for you. Be sure to include the date it was sent and link to the user who sent the message.

Usually a user's inbox will be set not to delete automatically, but many users turn this on since otherwise once your inbox fills up you have to manually delete messages in order to see any new ones that come in. It sounds like you've already found out about the ability to make other message folders, those are the best option for messages you want to keep. You can store sent messages as well as ones you've received there btw, in case you want to save ones you've sent since those will also be automatically deleted eventually. There is also the option to set up inbox rules which can automatically sort messages into certain folders for you. You can make several folders to increase the total amount of messages you can save (I believe it is 5 total).

Wait seriously!? I was really expecting to be told no one could help. This was extremely nice to hear.

I didn't think messages got deleted automatically, I'm not sure what happened to mine. I used to manually delete messages every month or so. And actually that's a fantastic Idea! I've now also created another folder called overflow and old messages will start to fall into there. It's actually crazy I had no idea about this 😭
