Help adoptions?

hi could someone help a total newbie out . . .I see forums for "free adoptions" I think? what does that mean? do you have to trade pets for them? or they are free given to you? or something? are there free adoptions for pets and if so where/how does that work exactly? I have no idea what/how to trade if all pets cost other pets, like what is valued at what or how to about pets or their worth? are there forums to share about your pets or talk to people or make friends or adoptions besides the site pound? thanks for any help
