I know this has probably been suggested before, but tree dogs, maybe? There could be birch, oak, willow, whatever kind, and the head could be the leaves? The willow could have little "strings" hanging down with flowers like actual willow trees. At the pup stage, the color of the dogs could be what the wood inside the tree looks like, or the color of the sapling. c:
