Genuinely curious, would a solution to the problem then be that all "character 4 character" threads be banned from Oekaki and instead only allowed in the forums? This seems like it may be a reasonable compromise if the concern is that these threads are increasing the amount of spam.
Additionally, should things like egg or gatcha adopts also be exclusive to the forums? This would give the freedom for people to draw adopts in whichever program they choose, but still have everything contained to one thread. Maybe there needs to be some official clarification that these types of threads are only allowed in the forums and not in the Oekaki boards.

i disagree with that, since i use character for character threads frequently, but i use oekaki as my primary art program.

Ideally, you could still use the Oekaki to create the character; since creating a character is in itself creating art, that wouldn't (or shouldn't) be a problem. You'd just have to upload it to the "character 4 character" thread seperately.

edit to add additional question;; Would "character 4 character" threads that provide a base to draw the character on be excluded from the rule, since you need access to the Oekaki to draw on the base? And are threads that disallow off-Oekaki characters allowed to stay on the Oekaki board?

There's no reason to ban "character for character" threads, so long as they are following the rules. Many people do use the Oekaki canvas to create their characters for these trades, and that is okay! Egg/gatcha adopts also aren't spam if they are drawn on the Oekaki canvas. If someone wants to use another program, they can use the User-made adopts or Character Designs Sales boards.

The Oekaki board is for making and sharing art in the Oekaki program. If that is what it is being used for, it's okay.

So just to completely clarify, so long as a "character 4 character" thread disallows off-Oekaki submissions, then it's totally ok to host on the Oekaki?

I feel like the staff has to be willing to work with the community on things like this.

scary wrote:oekaki as a program isn't useable for a lot of artists who want to participate in the art community & games. it is completely glitchy on mobile & the canvas isn't big enough for some to work on. how is it fair for people to draw hours and hours worth of a cover but get it locked. how are species covers for milestones any different? theyre hours worked on then off oekaki art. the double standard for that is confusing. the focus is on the adopt, but then its just a drawing of the adopt JUST like c4c instances. oekaki isn't welcoming at all to new people, learn it or you cannot participate at all in any games.

also make the lock symbol a feature you can STILL GET YOUR ART FROM.
getting art you worked hard on LOCKED than unable to even get your art back is completely unfair to the artist.

mods have said that you can send in a help ticket to get the unlocked ver. of art sent to you, just a little psa for those who have been locked ^^

And yes, I completely agree about chickenpaint. I struggle to use it, and most people i've spoken with agree.

What might help people actually finish on oekaki: add the magic wand tool to oekaki (+ sel pen like on sai), or whatever it is called
I am quitting so this doesn't matter much to me but chibi/chickenpaint made making a coloring layer tedious and often I will sketch or line and then color offsite. I know it is theoretically possible to edit the program in a way to allow it, since I have used a chibipaint mod that allows for magic wand coloring. I don't know how difficult it is to add admittedly as I am not familiar with most coding.

Tbh though cs's definition of what constitutes 'spam' is over the top. Because I am pretty sure some not detailed sketches don't get locked but some detailed covers have been locked. Not to mention shoving a big red lock image on top doesn't allow the artist to get a copy of the art, at least give some warning so the artists can save the finished product...?
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.

@jasps: please excuse how I quoted you here, I had to pull the text from the image ^^;

jasps wrote:"...it's disallowing participation in oekaki challenges such as character4character..."

This is one of the reasons I believe these challenges should be moved to the forums. If Oekaki is not compatible with an artist, that shouldn't exclude them from participating, and moving these threads to the forums solves this issue by allowing people to use whatever program they want.

jasps wrote:"...and alienating potential closed species artists who work off oekaki for no discernable reason..."

There are plenty of off-Oekaki closed species that such an artist could apply to.

jasps wrote:"Also why were pecos and keiikoa's images locked?"

I'd be very interested to see a mod response to this. I feel as though it needs to be made public exactly what the mod process is for locking an art piece.

scary wrote:how are species covers for milestones any different?

So long as the species under the cover are made on the Oekaki and shown on the Oekaki canvas, then they shouldn't be any different. Only when they're drawn off-Oekaki does it become a problem.

We should 1000% go back to the old way of locking things. The new lock cover is an eye sore at the best of times, and having to send in a help ticket to get to the art is going to cause extra work for a mod team that already seems to be struggling to keep up.

I normally just sitting in the background and watch theses types of things go down, but I wanted to come here to also point out that most of the things being locked are made by larger artists, and not people who come and go.
I don't really have a huge opinion on it and find that I am more in the middle. I agree with the staff and understand why they are becoming more strict, but I also understand why artists are upset by what is going on.

Even if the rules don't change, I would adore a change in the lock formatting. A big red lock in my gallery makes me feel as if I did something wrong. 🥺

Also, I beg to differ. I am a very small artist however a few of my c4c threads were locked.
