Pet Organization: Groups vs Tags

Like as two different options!
A little thing in the my account preferences for tags or groups. First there would be the option for everyone to try tagging, then you could decide weather or not to want to keep using it!

As far as knowing how many of a pet you have, there could be an option to view all pets, either all at once or by month like the archives does. Since pets are already grouped by adoption date, all pets of a certain type should be close to one another so you wouldn't have to look through all your pets to count how many you have.

As far as a tagging system being more confusing than a group system, I don't see how it would be any different except that a pet could be in more than one group/tag at a time. With the check box system already in place on Chicken Smoothie you could tag multiple pets at the same time just like you can put multiple pets into a group at the same time now.
