Trying to make an animation

So I am making an animation, I am using GIMP and I am using Preview. Once I finish each picture I try to put the pictures on top of each other but instead of them becoming one it just keeps them separate. So I move them into my sidebar and I click on the first image and press the down arrow it looks like an animation. But when I try to save it with ALL the images it only saves the one image. Instead of saving all the images as one document.
