Pictures

When I came onto a role-play today, Ricorn has removed all of our character pictures. Why? That's never happened to me before.

If we were to give all credit, is that fine?

Here is the role-play: viewtopic.php?f=28&t=719259#p17573801

let me tell you 'bout somethin' called copyright law.

under that law, you can NOT use something that you don't physically own or is not listed as "stock."

drawings that you didn't not request/commission/draw, photographs that you randomly found on google, and other things that are not stock fall under this. doing so and using the things i listed is called art theft.
nobody likes art thieves.

Your pictures were removed because you used copyrighted images or drawings. To use images for roleplaying, you need to be sure that they are under the Creative Commons license. To find an image like this, there is a good method of doing so:

First, go to http://www.Flickr.com and enter your search into the search box (ex. brown tabby cat) and click Search. Then, click Advanced Search. Scroll down until you see a Creative Commons box and check "Only search within Creative Commons-licensed content". If you're just using this image to represent your character or show a location, check off "Find content to use commercially". If you want to edit the picture, check off all three of the boxes. Click Search at the bottom. Once you find a nice image, check in the right-hand column for the License section. Click the license and read what you have to do in order to use the image and what you may not do with the image.

It seems complicated at first, but it isn't that difficult. ^^

Is it fine as long as we give full credit to the rightful owner? I mean, this is the first time this ever happened since I was on CS, and I've been role-play most of my time.

If the Creative Commons license allows you to redistribute the picture, you may use it so long as you credit them (ex. Picture by SeasonalGrape of www.Flickr.com). However, if the image does not have a Creative Commons license, you cannot use the image whether you give credit or not.

How can you tell if it has a Creative Commons License or not if it comes from google? Oh, and Ricorn stated that if the picture did belong to me, I can't use it. Since when did that become a rule in role-playing?

No, you risk using a copyrighted image if you use Google and I highly advise that you use Flickr instead. When you search on Google, it says "Image may be copyrighted".

You can use your own pictures as long as you didn't put any content in them from elsewhere.

It's strange, though. A LOT of role-plays have anime pictures, which we used, and their pictures aren't gone. Some of them even used the same pictures as some of us.

If I go to google images, advanced search, and make all of the picture "reusable", can I use the picture? Basically, can I use a picture that is resusable?

They probably haven't been spotted by a Moderator yet and you should report those.

I'm not sure, sorry. D8
