it appears like it has some item on it but I can't see anything to remove?

Sometimes the item can go offscreen. Use the square green button on the bottom and try to select the area on the right to see if there's anything there :3

That is an edit. Sometimes, artists draw on things like items or change the baselines; it's not a removable thing.

The orange ribbon is not removeable, but from the size of the image box on the linked pet and the screenshot, it looks like MoonRaeven is correct about the item going offscreen.

As an alternative to using the selection box mentioned above to find the item, if you are on a desktop, one of the easiest ways to grab an item out of bounds would be to select "ctrl" and "a" at the same time while in the dress-up page. That will highlight all items on the dress-up, which you can then use the grabber tool to select and drag off of the pet.
If you are using the selection box tool and you are unable to reach the item, you may need to zoom out on the dressup and scroll to the right. c:

thanks guys! yeah ctrl a fixed it, found a little portrait that probably ended in there when I was trying to remove it.
