Cracked Hanukkah Lions Question

I'm just curious, as someone who does not celebrate Hanukkah due to being of a different faith, what are the cracked lions from this past year's Hanukkah pets mean/symbolise? I've seen it on other Hanukkah pets as well and can't quite place what it's supposed to mean. And searching on Google isn't really helping especially seeing as I don't exactly know what it is I'm trying to look up. Thank you in advance for any information.

I think they're based on the mud/clay golem but I'm not Jewish either so I don't know for sure
