Groups are sorted by pet ID number, not adoption date. ID numbers are sequential so most of the time this appears identical to sorting by date, but sometimes there are cases where a pet has to be recreated for some reason, usually because it was involved in a scam and simply reversing the trades to get the original pet back would be too complicated. Recreating a pet makes an exact copy including the original adoption date, but since it's technically a new pet and can't reuse the same ID number, it gets a new number and ends up being sorted further up in the group.
