Dolce & Calliope
────────── .✦
“What’s on your mind?”
Dolce turned at the sound of Calliope’s voice. She had been standing on the balcony connected to her room, staring, pondering. Sighing, she shook her head and cast her eyes back to the rolling hills. “They always made it look so easy,” she said, her voice a whisper.
Calliope crossed the room swiftly, coming to stand beside the queen. She rested her paws on the banister and turned her gaze to where Dolce was looking. They stood in silence for a few moments. The captain waited. She knew how to be patient.
Eventually, Dolce continued. “I don’t know how Mother did it,” she murmured. A small smile played on her lips. “She was always so kind, thoughtful… she went out of her way to make sure everywerm was taken care of. I can’t help but feel like I won’t ever be able to fill those shoes.”
Calliope bumped her hips into the queen’s, fondly. “Stop right there,” she sniped. “You make a marvelous queen. The werms love you.”
The neapolitan werm shifted her eyes to meet the captain’s. There was nothing but warmth staring back at her. “I just wish she were still here. Both of them.”
Silent tears ran down Dolce’s face as she dropped her head onto Calliope’s shoulder. The captain’s tail intertwined with the queen’s as they both turned back to the neverending, gentle slopes. They stood in silence as the moments passed; Calliope only hoped her presence was enough of a comfort for the mourning queen.
