This clan values wit, determination, and bravery above all. They are a group of felines that
strive to push themselves to new extents each day, and because of that, many have called-
them foolish. However, they are fearlessly themselves and their territory is unique in its si
mplicity. Cats that journey here are never turned away, so long as they can prove themsel-
ves to be brave enough to venture into the thickets of the forest. Bravery is important. xxx

Life in the Clan of Howling Wind is harsh, but the beauty is plentiful. Heavy fog settles over the horizon in the early mornings and the sky is an abnormally rich blue during the days. At nighttime, the forest comes to life with insects, prey, and predators alike.

Each season, color erupts across the land: winter calls for white snow and blue-glazed ice, spring for blossoming flowers, summer for dry trees and shallow water, and autumn for barren leaves. For that very reason, cats are forced to adapt quickly, and no matter how young they may be, it's their duty for the clan to survive each season.

During winter, the territory is most beautiful, especially the camp's entrance. Through a gap in the thickest branches of trees where they scrape together and the wind can hardly whistle let-alone howl, the clan resides. They live by a tall cliff-side the color of old ash and they keep off the ground by living high up in the old oaken trees.

The ground of the camp is rich with marsh-land and water, hence why cats don't sleep down there, but it does make for a good place to hunt for toads and frogs...

But the forest isn't as beautiful as it may sound on paper. Two-legs seldom venture out into it despite living rather close to the outskirts because of their fears. The forest is eery and empty at night and the howling of wind can sometimes mix with the howls of wolves, and those that live in the forest are constantly tempting death

The forest that surrounds the camp is made up of trees that shriek and howl whenever the wind blows in between them, which is where the Clan got their name from. It is also where most of the prey is found, and despite the scariness of the forest, it has enough trees and bushes to support any family of critters.

if you can get past the scariness of the territory, life is good.

(─ ⊱ ⋯ dens ...]

The clan makes their home a little ways away from the thickest edge of the forest, where the trees are unbelievably large, heavy-set, and old. They sleep in the hollows of the bark where owls have surely nested before, and due to the closeness of each tree, it's easy to navigate from one edge of the camp to another just by climbing from branch to branch. Despite how it may sound, the holes left in the upper-trunks of the trees are actually rather large and make for perfect homes.

Inside the tree-dens, the bark ground is padded with moss and it is the apprentices' duty to change out the dens once half a moon has passed, which is a job they grumble about often.

The den that the elder's rest in is, by far, the shortest tree of them all. Only a couple of tail-lengths tall and so stout that the branches sweep the ground. It makes for the perfect home because the older cats don't have to strain their already-aching bones to leap up into the higher dens. Due to it being low to the ground, though, it gets damp quickly in summer because of the evaporation of the swamp-water and that means the apprentices have to tidy out the bedding twice as often.

Just above the elder's den, only the slightest bit taller is the nursery where queens nest with their lovely little kits. They're rather high-up for a kit but they aren't yet level with the warrior trees, and instead, are just a little bit below the apprentice trees, so the risk isn't huge. The tree overlooks the deepest part of the swamp so that if a kit falls down, they'll land in the water and not on land.

Next, is the apprentice den. It is one of the taller trees but isn't quite level with the warrior's den just yet, and compared to the other trees, its hollow is the smallest because there aren't very many apprentices at one time. By the trunk of the tree and around the roots, there are plenty of scratch marks from where cats have fallen out of the den and have had to catch themselves on their ways down, and the elders like to tell kits stories about naughty apprentices being sent to the stars after playing on the branches like an apprentice.

Strangely enough, the only den on the ground is the medicine cat's den. Each medicine cat lives underneath the leader's den, a large cliff-side. It's an open, wide space, perfect for treating injured patients and storing herbs. Of course, it floods occasionally, but otherwise remains a nice dry spot for the injured.

The largest flurry of trees would be the warrior den-trees. There is more than one scattered about the camp but the branches are all inter-twined for easy travel. These dens are typically big enough to fit three or four cats in each, and so den-mates are typically friends or mates. The deputy also sleeps here.

Just beside the tree-dens is a large cliff-side where the founder of the clan sleeps. It is perfect for sunning and surprisingly warm, even at night, and respected warriors may rest there during the day. The leader nestles themselves in the crevice between two large boulders on top of the cliff-side, which makes for a nice spot to sleep. And, when they need to make announcements, they stand on top of the two boulders, and the rest of the clan (kits and injured cats excluded) flock to the cliff-side.

The camp is strange but comfortable.

(─ ⊱ ⋯ goals ...]

Due to only just being founded, the Clan of Howling Wind's foundations are still shakey. However, some clear motivations have already been laid down. Cats of this clan survive by depending on their wit and bravery. For that very reason, their primary goal is to have a clan of cats that can push past their fear and do what needs to be done.

Because, despite the scariness of the territory, many frightened cats find their way into the clan.

To add to that, many cats insist on gathering up former kitty-pets and allowing them into the clan so that cats not born into the wild can also discover their bravery and hidden warrior spirit. Many of the older cats disagree with that sentiment, but over time it is becoming part of the clan's views and goals

Another prominent goal is the desire to instill religion in the young cats of the clan. The forest spirits are shy and cautious, which is exactly why not many animals -- canine, feline, two-leg, or otherwise -- believe in the spirits. But as the days pass the spirits of the whistling forest grow weaker. Without the protection of faithful believers, they are forced to hide their presence from all untrusted strangers, which isn't fair for themselves. To strengthen them, they need more believers and faith, and without those things, the reality of a forest without the spirits' protection is growing more likely each passing moment.

In short, the clan's main goals are proving their bravery through means of teaching and gathering and cementing their faith in the forest spirits. Both seem like simple ideas but neither are easy to achieve, especially not with a pack of wolves floating about the territory and toying with the scent borders.

But to strive for a better clan, they must reach these set goals -- even if it takes them a lifetime of work.

(─ ⊱ ⋯ prey/predator/dangers ...]

Common animals of prey that roam the territory are thrushes, toads, frogs, mice, squirrels, and lizards. By the marshes, frogs and thrushes are seen most often. The toads and frogs are easy prey to find and catch because of their noisiness: their loud croaks and heavy foot-steps.

Due to their lack of speed on land, both make for good animals for apprentices to learn to hunt on so long as they keep away from the water, but out of the two, frogs are undoubtedly faster. Thrushes are a lot harder to catch and only the best hunters of the clan can catch them often, despite how common they are.

In the forests roam more squirrels, mice, and some more thrushes. The squirrels are typically plump enough that they can't run super quickly, and because of the clan's experience in climbing trees, they're very easy to track and hunt. On the other hand. scrawny mice are incredibly hard to catch because of all the tree roots floating around. They're far swifter than ordinary forest-mice! Finally, thrushes live up in the trees, and again, they are hard critters to hunt.

Uncommon prey is bird eggs, chipmunks, ravens, and fresh-water fish. Bird eggs can be found in any section of the forest, and sometimes even the swamp, but they only pop up during late newleaf and early greenleaf. They're very hard to reach because of the height that parent birds nest!

Next, chipmunks are small morsels of prey but they are, unfortunately, very delicious and highly addictive for the cats in the clan... They're also found in the forests but hardly ever venture out of their little trunk-burrows, and in that aspect, they and the cats have something in common with each other. The best way to hunt them is by sticking your snout into the small holes they home in and biting madly. If they're lucky, a cat will catch one!

Ravens, much like thrushes, are incredibly hard to catch, but these little birds are even harder to find. Due to their dark feathers, they blend in seamlessly against the shadowy backdrop of the forest and their only give-aways are their obnoxious crows. On top of that, they're very swift and vigilant. How annoying!

Finally, in a fresh-water stream only a little bit away from the marshes and camp live plenty of fish. Trouts, bass, and salmon all live in the rushing stream, making for a good spot to hunt. But because cats aren't yet equipped to hunt in the water, they find it awfully hard to track the fish down because their shadows give them away immediately. Hunting is a tricky business, but hunting fish is so much harder than the professionals make it look!

Next, common dangers around the territory include wandering two-legs, drowning, marshes that have turned into quicksand pits, and falling from trees. While two-legs aren't always an immediate threat, a couple of two-leg kits stumble into the forest every so often, giggling and making a mess of things. But the cats aren't the only ones annoyed...

Drowning is a surprisingly common occurrence: while swimming, a cat falls into the water and they don't come out. Out of all the dangers, this is by far the most common, because it can happen quickly and suddenly. Many cats avoid the fresh-water streams that run by the marshes for that very reason because at least the marsh water isn't deep enough to drown in.

Speaking of marsh water, quicksand forms more often than you'd think when sand, soil, and gluey-water mix together, creating a deadly trap. Though it isn't as common as the other two, it's a very real danger for younger cats such as apprentices, and they pop up randomly around the marshes.

In the forest, the most common danger is falling from trees, and sometimes those trees can be the camp tree-dens. It doesn't happen too often but just often enough to be noted as such, and when it does happen, it calls for plenty of mourning.

Littered about the territory are some rarer predators and dangers, such as owls, aggressive rogues, stray dogs, and wolves. The owls live high atop the trees and they are only truly a danger toward kits and small apprentices, but they are menacing in the way they scare away prey, and so they can be more of a nuisance than a danger at times.

Aggressive, catty rogues pass through often: cats who think they're much too good to join a colony of other cats below their level, but still use their territory to their advantage. Though they're uncommon, they're not that big of a deal and a couple of patrols can send them on their ways in an instant.

Stray dogs are far more dangerous. They usually come in groups of one or two and, even then, they cause significant damage. When they stumble into the territory, the clan cats tend to avoid them until they take their leave, and only if they've been hanging around for a little too long do they intervene. Many a cat have come back home from patrols covered in dog slobber and wounds, and some cats have had worse fates than even that.

Finally, wolves pose the biggest threat for the clan, aside from natural dangers, of course. They are constantly lurking and waiting at the outskirts of the whistling forest, where those tall, skinny trees turn into snowy pine trees, and where the air thins out to become a mountain-range. The wolves haven't yet dared to come near but they are a constant looming threat and a reason for tension to be in the air. Many cats, especially the elders, have a horror story or two to tell about wolf packs.
