who would've thought? something you have no control over
            turns into your ultimate demise.
          ๐ฆ๐š๐ฒ ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ–๐ญ๐ก ๏ธณ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ”
          ๐Ÿ๐ซ๐ข๐๐š๐ฒ - ๐Ÿ”:๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ ๐ฉ.๐ฆ.
aella clucked her tongue at the male's poor attempt at a joke, shaking her head. his laughter resounded from across the table, drowning out whoever surrounded them with ease. albeit it was divine, musical. a sound she'd never tire of hearing.
"oh come onnnn, it wasn't that bad."
aella's gaze had wavered upon the realization that he was now staring directly at her, settling on the near-empty glass before her. "whatever you wanna tell yourself!"
lucien crossed his arms over his chest, rolling his eyes. "wait... i have another one... and this will really get'cha!"
            "oh lord..."
"what do you call fake spaghetti?"
aella sighed, rubbing her temples dramatically.
            "an impasta!"
            "oh my god..."
"ba dum tssss!" he exclaimed while doing some seriously questionable jazz hands.
            "please, just stop."
            --
the pair of best friends had seen to a normal friday evening up until that point. carrying on hourly conversations over dinner at their favorite restaurant, tuning the rest of the world out while they laughed rambunctiously over the most ludicrous of things. afterward, they'd find themselves in the company of the woods, a canopy of life. humming with creatures of all sorts. "stay on the path!" aella would scold, watching as her dear lucien, with childlike curiosity even at such an age, wandered all about. albeit that night, the term "curiosity killed the cat" would be ever applicable. in fact, it'd be the last words she'd hear before her world ceased to nothingness. folding into an alternate reality of obscurity.
            --
the mahogany-colored doors creaked to a close from behind them as they left side by side. a refreshing rush of lukewarm air hitting her, blowing her hair back in graceful waves. she was taken aback when lucien stepped before her, stopping her in her tracks. a gentle smile adorned his features, and aella felt herself flush crimson. outstretching his paw, he brushed the loose strands of brunette hair back behind her ear gingerly. leaning in moderately. all was as if aella had been prepping for this moment for centuries, as her eyes fluttered shut and her head shifted upwards to permit the meeting of their lips. there in the near-empty parking lot, they stood, indulging in each other. they maintained the outlandish moment for as long as they could, finally breaking apart. neither said a word as they gazed into one another's eyes. aella knew she wouldn't be the first to look away.

even as they leisurely walked towards the forest, neither spoke. the silence plaguing yet oddly natural. their paws brushed one another, and this time, she made the move. reaching just a bit further to intertwine them together. she felt as though what once was a void had been filled. even if nothing was confirmed - she knew the feeling was shared, and far from mutual. maybe that was all she needed for now. the lights stretching from the restaurant had since faded, giving way to blackness. lucien stayed on the path this time, never breaking away from the side of aella. that is until there was a quick snap of a twig, then a swift scuttle.
"what is that?" her male counterpart whispered nervously.
"i don't know... probably just some animal. after all, we are... in the woods." aella chuckled, simply stating the obvious.
            "and if it isn't?"
"if you're that scared, i'll go look." aella sighed, breaking away from his grasp, and the path.
and that was her greatest mistake.
"curiosity certainly did kill the cat," the voice snickered darkly.
then all she knew was gone.

          ๐ฆ๐š๐ฒ ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ—๐ญ๐ก ๏ธณ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ”
          ๐ฌ๐š๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐๐š๐ฒ - ๐Ÿ“:๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ ๐š.๐ฆ.
            she arose in a panic.
gasping for air, her heart racing a million miles a minute. the blood drumming vigorously within her ears. her claws scraping the cool ground as she propped herself up.
"w-where a-m i?!" she muttered, the words distorted, nearly incomprehensible.
her gaze fluctuated, rapidly running over her surroundings.
it was murky, dark. all of which surrounded her was stone walls, gray in color. albeit upon close inspection, crimson stains could be found painting the walls. a poor excuse for a cot off to the side. made of rusting, broken pieces of scrap metal. that was all of which was provided. the outside world was entirely gone. no windows, no light. the aroma putrid. stinking of rot and mold.
a flood of emotions hit her like a tidal wave, and suddenly she felt queasy. until remnants of last night's dinner came up in one heap. splattering across the floor in one sick mural.
adjacent to where she sat, there was a sizable metal door. of course, nothing she could possibly escape past. only an idea which could be left to wishful thinking. her mind was all over the place now, throwing questions left and right, like trying to figure out a puzzle that was impossible to solve.
            why was i taken?
            who kidnapped me?
            what did i do?
            am i going to die?

none of which could possibly be answered by her alone. not without explanation from someone - or rather something. what monster had torn her away from life as she knew it?
aella, after a staggering moment, found it within herself to stand. her balance not entirely easy but enough to keep her upright. she shook her head, attempting to recall what had happened just moments before she was here - confined to the walls of this unknown place categorized by misery. she rubbed her temples in response to a numbing headache that had suddenly overcome her. feeling as if a million knives were repeatedly being hammered directly into her head.
"dammit! come on!" she cursed, kicking at the floor.
            the memory wouldn't come.
aella paced about, back and forth, for what felt like hours. attempting to comprehend everything.
she was only stopped by the low, electric buzz of the metal door slamming open. followed by measured footsteps.
            "salutations," the deep voice echoed.
"who the hell are you?!" aella hissed, spinning around to face whoever this mysterious figure was.
they were tall and lanky, with bushy eyebrows and unkempt graying hair. looking to be in their mid-fifties. dressed in shoes, khakis, a polo, and a long, white lab coat. a biohazard symbol with the number "875" underneath printed in the corner. everything about the male fit the "mad scientist" title.
"well, excuse me. i'm doctor #875, and i'll be seeing to you, along with many others. you are our most prized possession, aella."
she was unable to make sense of his words. most "prized possession"? what the hell did that mean?
"what do you mean i'm your 'most prized possession'? i'm the exact same species as you!"
"ah, yes. perhaps you are. although your genetic code is... well, different. unlike any others. you don't know it, but we have been keeping an eye on you for years, ever since you were young."
"and what the hell does that have to do with anything?! why am i here?! where have you taken me?!"
"ms. proserpine, please, do calm down. answers will come with time."
she'd had enough. aella threw herself at the man in a blind rage. dragging her claws against his exposed cheek. the attack hadn't lasted for long, though. suddenly shocked into a state of unconsciousness by the collar around her neck.
"oh my sweet, sweet aella. you have so much to learn..." the scientist cooed from above her still body, before turning away and leaving the cell.

she'd already lost track of how many days she'd been trapped here.
deep, ugly circles ringed her eyes. her hair tangled and greasy. everything about her appeared rabid.
she hadn't slept; she couldn't. even in sleep, the horrors were inescapable. demons ran circles 'round her head, infecting her every thought. eating away at what little sanity she had a grip on.
they hadn't done much to her thus far. just some odd tests which she was always put to sleep for, and never awake to actually witness what was being done. afterward, aella would always check herself over but never found traces of anything that could be considered sinister.
questions had yet to be answered. she still didn't understand fully why she was here, or what they were doing with her. she'd tried to escape the first couple of times they removed her from her cell for testing, but always failed. the closest she'd gotten was barely making it down the narrow hallways lined with neighboring cells before they shocked her and she hit the ground with a powerful thud. only temporarily waking up before the drugs they'd injected her with pulled her back under for the time being.
her ribs were beginning to show through her fur. they barely fed her one meal a day, leaving her with a constant aching hunger in the pit of her stomach. days which she was tested on she received no food at all, and that was frequent. her attempts to retreat probably weren't helping, either, and only meant they'd prolong neglecting to feed her. aella was aware that they needed her alive, too, and therefore couldn't starve her.
the door hummed to life, opening.
"let's get going," the doctor growled, approaching her.
she didn't say a word, her body entirely still, facing away from him.
she felt his hands wrap around her wrists and bind them together with shackles behind her back, spinning her around and shoving her forward.
            "move," he hissed.
aella mumbled what would be deemed nonsense under her breath before moving forward, breaking out into the open. she hadn't needed him to direct her where she was going. she already knew.
but this time he stopped her.
            "what?" she snapped, facing him.
"we have... something else in store for you today, ms. aella. follow me."
there was a sudden palpable tension hanging in the crisp air.
            "w-what are you talking about...?"
"well, let's just say it will answer your questions."
"let me go!" she screamed, throwing a kick at his knees, causing them to buckle from underneath him.
            he collapsed to the ground.
she ran, moving as fast as her legs would carry her.
            she still didn't make it.

her eyes opened slowly, greeted by a blinding flash of light.
immediately she could tell she wasn't anywhere familiar. looking down, she gasped as she took in the metal restraints holding her arms and legs down.
"let me go!" she hollered as if anyone was going to listen.
aella wished, more than ever, that this was all just a nightmare. that she could close her eyes and she'd wake up, in her home, perhaps even in the arms of her undisclosed lover.
but such ideologies must be left to the mind of a child because that wasn't the case.
the room was purely white in color, an odd contrast against the technology which decorated it.
"greetings, ms. proserpine." a voice interrupted, coming into view moments after.
"why are you doing this to me?" she cried out.
"shhh, my dear. enough questions, please. i'm the head of your case, doctor #689. but, you may call me diana if you wish. you've already met quite a few of my co-workers. although today, the real fun begins." the last part was said with a nefarious smile, leaving aella truly petrified.
"i-i've never done anything bad my entire life! just let me go, please! i won't say anything to anyone, i'll keep quiet. i'll do anything! please!"
the doctor clucked her tongue, "aella, you know as well as i do you're never going to leave this place."
tears rolled down her cheeks, carving paths through the fur.
"now relax and close your eyes. you'll only feel a tiny prick for a minute."
she fought back with whatever willpower she had left. throwing her head around, screaming. her claws grazing the metal table she was chained down to.
"you're going to be the most powerful thing alive, aella. you will be the reason i go down in history."
            "no!"
the needle began sliding into her arm until she jerked it away, causing the syringe to go flying back.
            "damn you!" the female screamed.
reinforcements were there within a second, holding her arm down and keeping it steady. the amount was too much for her to fight. she was completely and hopelessly trapped.
            this time, they were successful.
who knew what - or rather who - she'd arise to.
one thing was certain; it wasn't going to be herself.

the kalon didn't know what to expect when she woke up. it left her absolutely petrified.
what had they done to her?
that godforsaken needle slipping into her forearm was the last thing she saw...
now, what was the first thing she was going to see?
obscureness turned to reality as she willed her eyelids open. chewing on the inside of her cheek out of anxiety, she could feel herself drawing blood with each new collapse of her teeth against the bare skin. finally, she looked down. nothing. absolutely nothing.
she shook her head out of confusion, questioning if she'd finally gone off the deep end and lost it.
she was still chained up, though.
          was the procedure not over?
she took the time to survey her surroundings and found that she was the only one in the room. not one single trace of the doctor or her assistants.
was it all just a nightmare? did the doctor even exist?
no, she was still here, still a piece in this endless mind game. still shackled and chained like some animal. albeit a fighting one, one which would never give up or bow down. one determined to rise above those which dragged it down.
the door swung open with one mighty creak, revealing yet another face she'd never seen before.
how many people did they have? each day it was someone new - some new recruit. did they work with the government? was all not as innocent as it had been perceived?
"let's get going, freak." the man spat, unfastening the cuffs only to quickly put on another pair.
freak? now that was new. she hadn't been called that one yet.
and how was she a freak?
everyone else here had told her about how... spectacular she was. like a god among mortals. except here, she certainly wasn't treated like one.
"my name's aella!" she spat, sending a ball of spit flying and landing in the middle of his forehead.
he wore a disgusted expression which rapidly contorted into one of rage. he raised a paw before smacking her across the face, sending her stumbling back. he roughly grabbed her and threw her forward, jabbing at her all the way to her cell where he discarded of her like she was nothing but dirt and threw the door closed.
she spat blood onto the ground, coughing. her paws extended before her. she hissed and peered back over her shoulder with a cold glare, then turned towards her cot and got up, dragging herself over and laying down.

a sharp, stabbing pain caused her to awaken.
the feeling extended all throughout her body, not just in one particular area.
she cringed, balling herself up and crying out silently. she began destructively beating her head against the callous surface of the cot as if it was going to do anything to treat the atrocious pain she felt.
            what was going on?
better yet... what had they done to her?
she could feel her bones rearranging themselves, forming into something entirely different. contracting and shifting. aella looked down, shrieking at the sight of what once was paws and fur.
scales, and reptilian feet. three, with serrated ebony claws extending from the forefront of her toes.
they had turned her into a monster.

fur had since been entirely replaced by scales. her tail completely transformed, right along with everything else she once knew about herself.
now she knew why she was referred to as a "freak".
because that's exactly what she was.
tests were far more frequent now with her changed appearance. though now, sometimes, she wasn't even knocked unconscious. leaving her awake throughout the duration of whatever they did to her.
she could feel herself mentally slipping away, giving way to something entirely new. a mindset of the beast she was - viewing everyone as prey, and she the predator.
she was forgetting everything about herself - her name, where she came from, where she was raised. all of it a distant memory, that day by day, was increasingly gone.
except she still hadn't forgotten about him.
she recalled every little bit about him, from his personality to his dark brown locks that were always kept short and gelled up, and those gorgeous blue eyes, the award-winning smile...
why had she not let go of him?
            --
"get off of me!" she roared, biting and clawing. the electric shock came within seconds.
but what she found when she arose was paradise compared to where she once was.
no stone walls and absence of light. in fact, it looked to be out in the open, protected by some kind of invisible forcefield.
at least, that was what she wanted to believe.
above her, towering in size, were trees of all kind. vegetation and flora surrounded her on all sides, and as she ventured further, she discovered a watering hole.
she was stunned. she didn't know how to react.
she began running around, weaving her way through the greenery, with no clue where she was going.
why was she acting like this?
there was one true answer, and that was that the animal was taking over.
it was only a matter of time before everything considered "human" about her was gone. when she lost her speech and could only communicate in grunts, groans, and growls.
her head tilted to the side when the dome opened, and a dead animal on a stretcher was lowered in.
it hit the ground a small ways away from her, inviting her forward.
she took the incentive and bolted forwards, but stopped.
she shook her head, dissatisfied for a reason she couldn't even explain.
the dome remained open, and another creature, which looked to be a deer, was brought down.
            this time it was thawed.
            she refused it again.
finally, they offered up something live. a massive cow.
it had no chance at all to move even an inch before she was digging into it.
            freak.

            ๐Ÿ๐ซ๐ข๐๐š๐ฒ - ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ:๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ ๐š.๐ฆ.
now that she was better accustomed to the so-called "tropical paradise", the tests truly began.
yesterday was nothing compared to what was to come today.
aella was losing her speech, as she had predicted. already growling and hissing in response to her environment. it terrified her.
how the hell had this all happened in a matter of close to two weeks?
she was someone - something - entirely new. no longer even the slightest bit compassionate or morally aware. whoever dared step foot in what was her new "home", would find themselves gutted from head to toe.
not that she had any sort of mercy to show to these people, to begin with.
she was consumed with rage, a flaming, ugly thing. and it threatened to eat her whole. then annihilate whoever dare proceeded to step in her way.
her iris' shifted in color, growing yellow.
            so who would be first?
            --
            the temperature dropped precipitously.
she watched as all around her, the trees began decaying, their leaves shedding, and snow littered the terrain once vast in plant life. the waterfall froze under the pressure.
she let out a bellowing roar, racing around recklessly. what she referred to as her "animal side" taking full reign.
it was entirely opposed to the cold, although not dumb enough to run itself into the forcefield, as that would only result in electrocution.
its claws tore through the deceased underbrush, darting and dodging overhanging vines and deceased underbrush. kicking up snow in its path.
then all returned to normalcy, just like that.
she had already figured out that she was living in a simulation, and while everything appeared authentic, it wasn't. she wasn't inside looking out, no, they created yet another illusion. and they would continue to do so until the end of her miserable life. she was foolish to actually believe they'd ever give her a chance to see the outside world. never again would she be kissed by the illuminating rays of the sun, or see the blue sky in all it's glory, or feel the soft touch of the grass against her smooth fur. nor the embrace of the man she fell hopelessly for.
what would he think if he saw her now?
would he run, or would he stay?
            of course, he would run...
who could possibly think something, such as she, was anything but ugly?
she was not something anyone in their right mind would ever admire.
            they would run, scream.
it's not like she had to fret, nobody was coming for her.
            --
            an opening, in the dome.
            she stalked forward slowly.
what had they in store for her now?
            another creature?
            no, a human. a man.
as she had expected, he reeked of fear, his pulse racing.
"hello..." he muttered, holding his hand out.
            she didn't move.
            prey or friend?
            it was her choice.
"i'm not.. i-i'm not here to hurt you.."
a low growl. aella maneuvered forward. her attention solely locked on him.
she snapped her jaws at him in one mighty demonstration of dominance.
            "i'm h-handler #59, but i've n-never worked with something such as y-yourself."
            she made up her mind.
            prey.
she lunged at him, and he flew back automatically, scrambling for the door.
she managed to grab his leg, but he still made it out.

they hadn't sent someone else in her cage since the incident with the previous "handler".
perhaps they'd take it as a lesson learned, and figure out that maybe, just maybe, that wasn't the best idea.
that they had transformed her fully.
she was wrong to uphold such expectations.
            --
she hadn't even seen him come in.
he was armed, though. they hadn't sent him in empty-handed.
this one held an aura of confidence, and even a desire to understand the unknown.
but as she neared him, a sensation shot through her.
            the face was too recognizable.
            could it possibly be...?
            no.
lucien... h-he would never work for such a place...
            right?
"hey girl..." he smiled weakly, approaching her carefully.
            he's better than that...
she watched each new step like a hawk.
had he been part of this whole thing?
was that it? he'd convince her he loved her then let them take her away?

she wanted to cry, scream, run...
            but she couldn't.
"my name is lucien... i'm handler #89. i just took this job two days ago, and i don't know much about it... as far as i know, though, they've somehow managed to bring your species back to life..."
she didn't know whether or not she should trust him. pondering on the idea that this was just another lie, and that he knew exactly who she was.
he didn't say anything else, just continued to approach her with an outstretched hand and a kind face.
            that godforsaken face.
upon closer inspection, something about him was... different.
he looked like he hadn't slept in ages, and that once bright, gleaming smile had ceased to something far less extravagant.
            was it because of... her?
            no.
she had to stop believing that fairytale bull.
            she held her ground, unmoving.
his hand was inches from the tip of her face now, and it was growing closer and closer with each passing
            second.
            then he touched her.
"atta' girl," he cooed, his hand resting on her face.
within her mind, a battle carried on, warring between taking his arm off or leaving it be.
            but then he removed it.
"you aren't so bad after all, are ya?" he inquired, tilting his head to the side.
            nothing came from her.
did she try and give him some sort of sign?
            it was pointless.
"hey... i have this for you." in his hand, three fish. he proceeded to toss them at her, and she caught them midair.
a ghastly droning sound resounded throughout the cage before a booming voice overtook her home, "lucien, that's enough for today."
he had since turned around, and nodding to himself, bid her farewell before disappearing.
            but what did she believe?

              he visited her daily.
she still didn't know whether or not she should trust his story.
if he was and had been working with them, plotting all of this all along. after all, the pair had known each other since they were practically newborns, and who knows? maybe even his parents were involved.
or he was innocent and had simply taken the job because it was one unlike any other..? he was a curious thing.
it all seemed absurd, ultimately, but she wouldn't hold anything against anyone any longer.
she had witnessed just how dark the world truly was. how far one would go to achieve hidden desires.
even if it meant sweeping an innocent off the streets and changing them into an entirely new creature.
and all for what? some damn science project?
she wishes she knew. that she'd ever know. ever be able to even begin to understand such minds.
but she never would. and now everything about her, other than her thought process, was feral.
what a terrifying thought - the idea that she could do absolutely anything at any given moment, albeit
unable to control it, forcing her to give in.
she often had episodes of "blind rage" - where she just lost it and went after everything and anything. some part of her feared for lucien, but the other half felt nothing. two ends on the spectrum, one trusting and demanding he had nothing to do with any of this, while the other told her that he'd set her up, landed her here, and in this situation. that he deserved a horrible, long death.
and it was all up to her to decide.
did he live or did he die?
              she wasn't sure.
would she kill the so-called "love of her life"?
was that still even what he was?
she almost wished they stole her mind, too.
              --
he entered the cage with his usual small smile and a handful of fish. lucien clucked his tongue, telling her he was here. she emerged from the safety of the trees, and out into the open, looking him up and down. no visible weapons - but she knew he must have carried the device, which, if needed, could activate the shock collar sealed around her neck. he would be stupid not to - even she could say that.
"good morning, lilith." the name he'd since given her - like she was his pet. although it was better then #7666, which is what everyone else referred to her as.
"here you are," he held up the dead fish before her, allowing it to hang in the air, tempting her forward. she followed it before he set it on the ground and she took the opportunity to grab it before scrambling back, away from him. he sighed audibly as if disappointed she didn't trust him entirely.
              how could she?
the idea ticked her off more than anything. he was fortunate she had allowed him to get even this close to her without tearing his head off, yet that wasn't good enough? what more did he want from her? she probably had everything stripped away from her because of him. what was he offered that was even worth such a horrendous deed? who could possibly stoop so low?
then it happened, in a flash.
lilith was charging at him, dirt particles clouding the air.
her irises completely transformed, teeth bore, claws outstretched. all ready to deliver one mighty blow to the man she had once loved so dearly - someone she would go to the ends of the earth for. and now? now she was going to kill him. ensure she was the last thing he saw. he didn't have time to do anything - not move, or grab for the remote they'd given him to use if she needed to be electrocuted. he was down on the rough terrain now, looking up into the jaws of the beast, and those bright yellow eyes...
one powerful snap and all was over.
she was staring down at his lifeless corpse.
              she looked up.
the opportunity to escape was now.
              she ran.
              and ran.
