{| ;; Gritt asks - Hmm, I'm not sure. I don't think he'll be a magic user (I have enough of them already honestly). I think he may be something of an escape artist? Or maybe at least a really good lock-picker and pickpocket. He's probably really good at interpreting maps and riddles, and may even act as a translator / voice of reason to the others when they get out of hand.
-----{| ;; Gritt asks - Yes, very much so. He's sort of the captain's right hand man, behind the scenes kind of guy. He's the small agile one of the group, and the thinker for most of the crew honestly.
-----{| ;; Gritt asks - Yes he and the captain are certainly close. The captain is probably the one who brings out the more brutal side of him, as before he was a pirate he was quite shy and soft spoken. However, the captain is also the one who helps him come to terms with his identity and acts as almost a father figure to him sometimes. The captain is likely the one who encouraged him to develop his skills in pick pocketing and lock picking for more nefarious schemes
-----{| ;; Gritt asks - I think the village was pretty indifferent towards him - or I guess her at the time? - , but not in a bad way. I get the feeling they kinda let him be the same way they let everyone else be. He was a pretty standard citizen honestly. The only real difference between him and the average person was that he was transgender, though he didn't know quite what to make of his identity at the time. They didn't persecute him for being trans because at the time he was still closeted to everyone and not even he really knew what it was.
-----{| ;; Gritt asks Given that he was pretty standard in the village, I assume he was not naturally a thief, and so learned EVERYTHING from his time as a pirate. Is that correct of me? Like as far as locksmithing and such
- Mm I would say mostly correct? I imagine he would've hung out or been around Tokala quite a lot, and Tokala was a little bit of a thief / rogue himself (though in a slightly more Robin Hood style kinda way) and was an archer as well, and probably taught him a little bit about that kind of stuff. However, most of it he probably would've learned by trial and error and from the pirates.
-----{| ;; Gritt asks So I read Tokala's bio, and given that and the tendencies of pirates, I assume that this character must have picked up a thing or two on fighting, strictly based on those facts.
- I can just about guarantee it. Tokala was well known for getting into a lot of fights (and even ended up getting kicked out of the village because of that but this isn't about him) and I'm thinking that he was actually first introduced to the pirates in the middle of a fight / raid. I also doubt the captain would've let him go around and join them on raids and stuff if he wasn't able to defend himself.
-----{| ;; Gritt asks - I imagine he works best on his own with a few key exceptions and so prefers to be on his own most of the time. However, if say there's a confrontation or a fight, he prefers to be in a group as he's not good at hand to hand combat due his stature and strength and prefers to keep his distance from enemies. If it's like a puzzle or riddle, he prefers to be on his own as others are usually a distraction to him. If he's close friends with someone though, he doesn't mind being around them more.
-----{| ;; Gritt asks - I'm not entirely sure if he's done anything extraordinary in his life at this point. So far in his life he's been fairly passive and has mostly been acted upon instead of acting himself. However, now that he's been lumped in with a crew of pirates I'm sure that's bound to change. I'd say so far his biggest achievement in life is probably learning multiple languages - a skill that very very few people have in their day and age - and acting as a translator for any foreigners they come across.
-----{| ;; Gritt asks - I'd imagine he's in his mid to late teens,
maybe very early twenties at the absolute most.
-----{| ;; Gritt asks - Right now, I doubt he has siblings. Though it's possible he may have an older brother? I don't think any siblings he did have would play too much of a big role in his life except for late childhood - early teen years.
-----{| ;; Gritt asks - There are certainly characters he trusts, but simply seeing as he's a pirate, I doubt there are any he trusts with no exceptions. The most likely candidates though would be his family, Tokala, and the captain. He'd trust them the most, but not unconditionally. He hasn't seen his family in quite a while, and while he was friends with Tokala, I doubt they would've been too close as Tokala was fairly aloof among the villagers (he was often too busy for most things) and he himself was a bit too shy to really become good friends with someone. Though he does see the captain as something of a father figure, he recognizes he's still shady and treacherous and he knows better than to let his guard down around the other pirates simply due to their nature.
-----{| ;; Gritt asks - I don't think so? I think anyone hes enemies with or anyone who considers themself his enemy is probably a general enemy of the crew. This may come to change later though.
-----{| ;; Gritt asks - I'm not sure. Possibly? I don't really have any clear cut concepts for the rest of the crew just yet so I can't say for sure.
-----{| ;; Gritt asks - As of right now, I don't think so. However, it's possible that some event in the future may cause him to change his mind and go his own way.
-----{| ;; Gritt asks - (Gonna answer these two as one as they're closely linked) A bit of both in a way. He'd gone out into the woods one day for a bit of exploring and alone time when he was kidnapped by a group of bandits. Those bandits then took him to a port city to try to sell him into slavery across the seas, but they were intercepted by the pirates who fought off / killed the bandits and raided their stuff. They found him probably hiding behind some of the caravans but unable to get away, and instead of killing him too the captain decided to take him in and teach / mentor him.
-----{| ;; Gritt asks - Honestly he was in that village just because that's where he was born. They really didn't move around that much.
-----{| ;; Gritt asks - He was probably excited at the thought of traveling and seeing far off foreign places, but I don't think he'd be quite as thrilled about all the other dirty stuff that comes with pirating, though I imagine he'd develop a sort of thick-skinned tolerance / indifference to it later on.
-----{| ;; Gritt asks He seems pretty aloof and not too attached to anyone or anything including his own morals. This begs a question of religion. Including of him, his village, his parents, or even of his crew and captain. Is he atheist?
- Possibly to some extent. His hometown, since it's more out in the open and connected, probably has two or three primary religions with a few extreme minority groups. At least one of those religions is likely a polytheistic religion as a guard in a short story I wrote for one of my previous entries swears in the name of the gods, plural. I imagine his family likely followed one of the three more common religions, though I'm not sure which specifically. He was probably raised to believe the same religion and the same god or gods, however I imagine he'd also begin to notice inconsistencies and other logical fallacies and other minor things that over the years slowly turned him off the religion. He'd probably have become fully or mostly atheist at some point after joining the pirates, possibly further prompted to question religions in general by the pirates' actions. He does have a sense of morality, but he's been able to sort of distance himself from it so it doesn't feel quite so personal, as he knows that if he's going to live this life he needs to be tough. He won't be cruel for cruelty's sake, but if you get in between him and what needs to be done or you threaten him, he won't let his morality get in the way. Both of these factors - the slow turn to atheism and distancing himself temporarily from his morality - has probably led to him gaining a somewhat nihilistic outlook on life.
-----{| ;; Gritt asks - Most of his motivation may honestly come from simple boredom or just having nothing better to do. Some might be motivated by curiosity and wanting to know the truth, or possibly out of some sense of obligation to the captain? But he certainly doesn't do it for personal materialistic / monetary gain like everyone else does. I don't think he's motivated by a sense of kinsip or responsibiliy to the rest of the crew either.
-- I also want to take a second to go back to what you asked earlier about him possibly favoring other crew members or wanting to leave the crew. Due to the circumstances of his arrival into the crew, I really don't think he'd be too attached to any of them. There might be one or two he ends up becoming friends with, but I think for the most part he wouldn't care overly much about any of them. It almost makes me think that the only reason he stays with them at this point is because he has nowhere else to go, and at this point he's gained a reputation as a pirate and it's just safer for him to stay with the crew than to go his own way and be chased and persecuted. I honestly think the only member he'd feel much loyalty to at all is the captain, ad that's likely because he feels like he owes the captain something for saving his life.
-----{| ;; Gritt asks - I imagine he's generally fairly quiet when talking with others and prefers to allow them to speak more while he just kinda stays quiet, with the occasional interjection / interruption to correct them on something, call them out, ask a question, offer advice, etc. He's generally quite guarded and I would imagine tends to keep most of his thoughts, opinions, and ideas to himself. He's respectful until you've proven you don't deserve his respect. He dislikes confrontations, so he rarely raises his voice, instead preferring to stay calm and composed except for a few circumstances.
-----{| ;; Gritt asks - Talking in person, he's quite a bit more reserved and mysterious, not letting others in on what's going on in his mind. However, he keeps detailed journal entries on what the crew gets up to and is prone to a lot of rambling and going off on tangents in his writing.
-----{| ;; Gritt asks - Yes, more or less. He was born biologically female but since he was young he never felt quite right with the feminine label, and being called "she" and "her" often made him deeply uncomfortable. At the time, he didn't know what he was experiencing or how to come to terms with this "split identity", and often felt like he was living behind a mask of something he wasn't. Living in the time and place he was, things like being gay or being transgender were rarely if ever discussed, and even then generally only in a negative light. After being taken in by the pirates and seeing how the captain acted, he felt fairly safe in confiding to the captain how he'd been feeling an that he'd been feeling like that for a long time, at which point the captain explained to him the idea of gender dysphoria and being transgender, and he was finally able to understand what he'd been experiencing and begin to come to terms with who he was.
- As long as he lives, he'll probably experience some form of gender dysphoria as he lives in a time before any sort of modern medicine and technology, where the most modern stuff is magic. With the right materials and preparations though, it might be possible to somehow do that kind of complicated surgery? I'm not entirely sure on how advanced "magic medicine" is yet.
-----{| ;; Gritt asks - Personally I think that under normal circumstances, Rohan would generally be too passive to really be of much use in positions of authority, but since these aren't normal circumstances and he's essentially one of the highest ranked among a crew of pirates, he's gotta do something to show that and earn the respect of those under him. This has likely lead him to acting more aggressively than he usually would, and I'd say his style of leading/ordering is somewhere between "yell threats and orders until you listen" and "get scarily quiet 'you dare question me' when disobeyed". I wouldn't be surprised if he carried a knife with him at all times, and he's probably used it to leverage his authority before when people try to sass, backtalk, or threaten him. He's likely quite skilled with a knife even though he's not good at hand to hand combat but only uses it as his absolute last resort.
