The shore was beautiful. Mother took me above the water every Saturday to commemorate the progress I was making in my studies. I was homeschooled, we couldn't afford the fees for me to attend the local school. Money was an issue for me and my mother. It was just us two. After Mother spent some time teaching me we'd both go our separate ways to our jobs. I worked at a small souvenir shop. I'd spend hours shelving things and keeping the shop clean. The manager was very nice, though. Every day she would share pastries with me and tell me stories about where each souvenir came from. Although my weeks were usually very pleasant, Saturday was always my favorite.

We'd always go above water right before sunset, which quickly became my favorite time of day. My mom took me at sunset because she didn't want to be seen by regular kalons, but I didn't mind going late at all. The colors of the sky were always so beautiful. And when the sun fell all the way down, we'd stare at the stars and find constellations. On some occasions, I'd glance over at the shore and spot a wavy haired kalon reading at the shore. I swear, every time I saw him my heart skipped a beat... He was about my age at the times that I saw him, with light and cloudy fur, and patches that looked like the night sky... The amount of Saturday nights I spent dreaming of him were immeasurable.

The path we took to shore every Saturday was devoid of others. The plants of many colors that battled the currents were always welcoming, though. No matter what pushed them, they always stayed in their place. They reminded me of myself when everything was beginning to fall apart. It started when my manager had to sell her shop.

There wasn't enough business. One day it all just came to a halt. It was as if nobody was interested anymore. Soon the manager would have nothing left to pay me, and then nothing left to support herself. When a businessman offered to take the shop for a nice deal of money, it was an offer she wasn't able to decline. She really didn't want to do it, and she could tell I didn't want her to do it either, but what else was she supposed to do? She was offered a position as an employee, but she politely declined. "I'm getting old," she said. "All that labor ain't good for me." I wish I knew where she was today, or if she's even around today. I'd love to catch up with her. We kept in contact after she passed the shop on, but as of today I haven't seen her since.

The new manager wasn't so kind. His employees meant nothing to him. It wasn't his issue if we were in pain, or sick. "Toughen up," he'd say. "You want to get your paycheck, dont you?" He had no problem with keeping us as long as he wanted if he wanted something done. If we refused, he'd threaten us with the loss of our jobs. We'd work until our fins were sore and could barely swim home. It was unethical, but we couldn't do anything but suffer for our diminishing paychecks. Slowly the manager would begin to take more money for himself. We weren't people, not to him. On some days I would think that he saw us as machines.

At least I still had my mother. I still had something to look forward to when I got home. Even after the worst days I'd go home and I'd get so happy when I saw her smile. Her dinners were always delicious and the stories she had to tell were all the best. Sometimes we'd go for strolls through the quieter parts of town and just talk. I could tell her almost anything. Bad days at work were all made worth it when I came home to my happy mother.
