what are we like?

⠒ how does one advance in rank/get promoted?
A second of the cavalry, after being trained to their best combat and hunting abilities, will have to pass a life-threatening assessment in order to receive their place among the cavalry. Many will fail, and that is just the hard truth of it. The Tribe of Burned Claws has realized that only the strongest, most will-powered felines will make it among their territory in the city, and keep their tribe running for many generations to come. If a second fails their assessment, they will either die from the experience, be executed by their leader, the shaman, or receive their permanent place among the weaklings.

When the second is ready to take on their assessment, and most likely accompanied by a few others that have also trained, the tribe will send out the group among the streets of the city, alone, and at the darkest hours of the night. These young felines have several threats among their trek - humans, dogs, and the many cars among the streets. They are required to spend the entire night on these streets, and return unscathed to their tribe in the morning. However, there is one aspect missing - these seconds are up against each other, and they will most likely fight for it. Almost like in The Hunger Games, the seconds will encounter each other and fight so that only one of them will make it out alive. Although this may seem harsh, it proves to help only the strongest make it out among their tribe, and to pass their desired traits in the future generations.


⠒ how does one retire or be demoted of rank?
When an older member of the cavalry has finally reached the end of their glory-days, it's time to say goodbye to their placement, and take their place among the retired. As a sort of reward, and thanks for their service and contribution to the tribe, the shaman will come to thank him and bless him themselves, and the other tribe members will also standby to observe and bode farewell to the elder. Once this tiny ceremony is over, the feline is officially retired, and will retreat into the private room of the house that they will be escorted to. Rarely will they have any visitors, other than from family, friends, or the shaman's second to check up on them, and they will be confined to the single room. They will pass here, and then their body will be deposed of respectfully. It's not the grandest way to go, but to the cats of The Tribe of Burned Claws, it is worthy for them.


⠒ ceremony for the dead
Since there isn't much land around the city for the tribe to bury their dead, they use a different method to say goodbye. Only respected felines or members of the cavalry that have passed in battle will receive this ceremony as a gift to them for their contribution to the tribe. Friends or family of the deceased cat will carry them on their back, while the rest of the tribe will surround them in protection. They will take their hidden and secretive routes throughout the city, and down to the beach. They must only travel there at night, though, as the beach is fairly busy during the daytime. Once they reach the beach, the felines carrying the deceased on their back will wade into the water and send off the dead with a hard push out into the sea. When the sea is retreating, the body will be carried out into the ocean, and most likely be weighted down to the ocean floor from there. However, unknown by the tribe, the body may end up washed up on shore the next morning.

For cats that have been executed, or were weaklings and have passed away, their bodies are simply dumped outside or in any trash-bin they can find. It's a harsh thing to say, really, or for one felines to do, but this is their way among the tribe, and it has kept them alive.


⠒ greeting of the ancestors
This event happens every two-moons, and is only performed by the shaman, or leader, themselves. There is no special place that they travel to, such as a moon-pool or a cave with gems. On the contrary, the shaman will sit upon the roof of the mansion they call home, and reach up to its highest point. They will look up into the stars, and at the moon, and make their request. Either through a dream or a vision, the shaman will know if the ancestors have heard his plea.


⠒ reputation & temperment
The Tribe of Burned Claws are a ruthless, rule-enforcing group of cats. Their main, and only focus, is their own survival, and no one else's. All of the cats are extremely loyal to their tribe, and betrayal is taken very harshly. Training for becoming a member of the cavalry is a tough experience, and sometimes not all cats make it. However, this tough lifestyle for the tribe seems to work for them, as it weeds out the weak and only lets the strong survive, which is what the tribe needs in order to prosper for long. They have learned over time that there is no room for weakness among survival in the city.


⠒ executions
A cat that is found to have betrayed their tribe is executed by the shaman himself, and all other cats are forced to watch, no matter their rank or age. The cat will not have a chance to fight for their life, and will have their throat torn out almost instantly. Other members of the tribe that desire to take part in the execution can also take turns battering and torturing the feline, such as leaving claws-marks over their body. These executions are extremely violent and hard to watch from everyone. Sometimes, even the mate/family/friends of the cat of which is being executed are forced to take part in the killing. However, there is no slight thought of ending this tradition from any of the tribe members, and so it stays.

what do we do?

⠒ morning routine
The shaman leaves little to no time for the tribe to wake up naturally, and thus tends to wake everyone in the early hours of the morning, when the city is still quiet. They will send out hunting parties, patrols, and herb-gathering patrols as well.


⠒ afternoon routine
When the afternoon comes, many of the hunting parties and patrols will have returned from their work. The afternoons are spent lazily puttering around, and basking in the warm sun. Since this time of the day is the hottest, the tribe will save up their energy until the nighttime. Thus, many cats will eat their rations, rest their muscles, and quench their thirst until their work starts again.

When winter comes, and the air is cold, the tribe rarely has time to lay around in the afternoon. Most hunting and patrolling parties are sent out for the entire day, in order to catch prey that is hard to come across during this time. The members of the cavalry will take their shifts throughout the afternoon to prevent worn-out cats from catching a sickness. Felines have to be very careful during this time, keeping their own health in check, but the streets are nearly empty and less crowded.


⠒ nightly routine
During the warmer seasons, this is when most of the hunting and patrolling parties are sent out. Since the night is cooler, it is easier to preserve energy, and prey is also more abundant. Plus, felines are mostly nocturnal, and thus it is easier as well.

During the winter, when it is much colder out, the tribe will take a break from hunting, as the night can be very cold. Some hunting parties and patrols are still sent out, but rarely for very long.

⠒ the city
These cats live in the city of Valparaíso, Chile. Since the city is very large, the tribe only claims control of a large, but small region of the city, considering how gigantic it is. Below are a few images as examples -
streets are always busy with cars and people, therefore they are mainly avoided by the felines. However, at night, when they are more empty, sometimes they are used for ways of navigation.
alleyways are used as their hidden routes to different places among the city. They are the easiest ways to travel and navigate, considering that they are nearly hidden from sight. ( x x )
the beach is very, very busy, but also used for ceremonies of the dead. It is only traveled to at night, when it is empty.


⠒ the mansion
This is their home and their base, where they store prey, rest, and raise their young. It is an abandoned mansion atop a hill, large and grand. With the lack of money really available for the cost of tearing it down, the humans decided to leave this building up as a landmark and tourist-attraction. (x)
The first floor/bottom level - This area is used by the retired and weaklings, as it is the most exposed if a human were to enter.
The second flood - The rickety stairs takes one up to the second floor, which is mainly just bedrooms. Ranks on this level include the cavalry, the seconds, and the brood-mothers with their littleuns.
The third floor - Going up another flight of stairs, one will find themselves on the third floor, which is also the final floor of the mansion. There are two bedrooms here. Ranks on this level is the shaman and the shamans second, along with the guard put in place to protect them.
