Charlotte stared down at the lined sheet in front of her. She blew a wisp of light brown hair out of her face. In her hand was a blunt pencil, decorated with misshapen splotches of orange and black. Her frown deepened. She was sitting hunched over her paper, which was on a low, smooth table. The wooden chair she was sitting in was cushioned, but Charlotte barely felt it. Her feet were crossed, with only her right foot touching the stained gray rug beneath her. The overhead light was off, and the curtains were drawn shut to cover the window, so that the only light in the room came from below the door and the plain lamp sitting on the table.

A loud knock on her door startled her. She sat up with a jolt, and in doing so, her left arm knocked a stack of thick books off of the table, which made a muffled thump when they hit the rug. After recovering, she turned to the door. She stood up and started to walk to the door, but it swung open anyway. In peeked a grinning face framed with brown hair.

"Charlotte! They all came here and we're playing basketball. Come on out!" The girl's hair was disheveled, and her face was red. Her long braid had hair sticking out of it all over.

"Isabel, I can't. I have to finish this assignment." Charlotte sat back down in her chair, staring at the page again. She sighed, wrote a word, and immediately erased it.

"That's what you always say. You need to live a little! There's more to life than school, you know." Isabel paused, then said, "What is it this time?"

"Writing...it's hard."

"When's it due?"

"I only have a month to do it."

"C'mon, that's forever! This is the nicest day we'll have for months! Come play basketball with us, just for a bit!"

Charlotte sighed, knowing that Isabel would never stop until she went. "If you're so intent on me going outside, I'll watch."

"Why don't you ever play sports? What's the worst that could happen?"

"A lot of things, actually. I could break a leg, get a concussion..."

"How likely do you think that is? Tons of people play sports and they're perfectly fine. It's just basketball!"

"I just don't want to, okay, Isabel?"

Isabel waited a few moments, then asked, "Are you scared?"

"Of what?"

"Of messing up while all of those boys are watching."

"Of course not!"

"Well, I think you are. Who is it? Gabriel?"

"Isabel, I don't want to play. It's not because of anyone who is out there. I just want to stay up here and work on my assignment."

"Is it Henry?"

"No!"

Isabel smiled, and said, in a teasing tone, "I'll tell everyone that you like Henry if you don't come and play with us. Starting with Henry and his friends."

"That's blackmail."

"So?"

"Fine, I'll play, but just this once."

"So you do have a crush on Henry!"

"No, I just don't want everyone to think that."

"We'll see, Charlotte. We'll see."
