in the beginning, there was only him and the locket. the locket charmed him, enticing him with tender whispers of untold power, and having nothing else to do, he reached out to them. the locket flew through the air, firmly clasping itself around his neck. he tried to get it off, to no avail. all he was rewarded with was, "you will only be allowed to remove me when the universe flourishes." he experimented with his new power for a while, before becoming quite lonely. he decided to create worlds beyond compare, so that he would no longer be lonely. worlds unfurled from the vast emptiness around him, colors and lights springing to life before his eyes. when he was finished, a great tiredness overtook him, and he slept. he slept for what seemed like eons, but was suddenly awake. curious of how the worlds he had created were functioning and existing, he descended to what seemed like the most heavily populated; earth.

the earth was not as he imagined it. he saw with increasing horror the cruelty and savagery among the residents of earth. "why is this happening?" he howled to the sky. "why are they this way?" the sky lifted him up and set him on a cloud, tendrils of fog forming a blurry figure. "they have always been this way." the sky replied. "why?" he cried, stepping forward on wobbly paws. "i do not know this, but the ocean might." it dissipated and sent him back to the ground. determined to discover the true reason why, he went to the ocean. "why is the earth so cruel?" he asked the waves, lapping at the sandy shore. the ocean pulled him under, depositing him before the lord of the water. "i do not know." it rumbled, voice causing tremors in the water around it. "ask the fires and the forest, they might know." he went to all the denizens of the earth, but they did not know. at the end of his journey, he sat in a darkened cave, exhausted and hopeless. "why?" he whispered to himself. the shadows coagulated into a vaguely recognizeable form, and smiled. "they are corrupted. there is no hope for their redemption." they whispered, turning circles around the dazed deity. "it would be best to destroy this world." they hissed, dissipating into the darkness once again. he sat there for a while, contemplating the darkness's words. finally, he had made a decision. with a crackle of light, he returned to his place above the stars, and prepared.

the earth had split in twain, cleaved by his anger. he had seen dying stars before, but nothing like this. the emotions that flooded from it overwhelmed him, almost made him feel guilty. but they bolstered him to create a new world, a better world. leaving behind the wreckage of the failed experiment, he set out to find the utopia he had dreamt of in his first moments. the number of worlds that had fallen to his judgment grew and grew, until it was too many to count. the rest that were left were either uninhabited or unjudged. he frantically searched and created, until he finally gave up. "why should i interfere?" he said, letting his great wings fall to the ground beside him. "there will never be a utopia. my dream will never be accomplished." and with that, he created a sole habited world, an almost perfect replica of the first planet he had destroyed. the great weariness washed over him like a crashing wave, and he slept.

he awoke, surveying the worlds before him. nothing much had changed, except for a beacon of light. it was extraordinarily annoying to the drowsy god, who descended once more to put an end to this light. what he saw surprised him. the world was... purer, somehow. although the darkness which had spoken to him before had taken over, humanity, forced to survive without excess was more extreme. it was either straight up savagery or kindness. he preferred this to the morally grey cutthroats he had seen before. the light that beckoned but repelled him was coming from a duo of travelers of some sort. he watched them closely, and through all the obstacles that he summoned, they still stayed pure. that extinguished hope of that perfect utopia began to kindle inside his heart, but was forcefully extinguished by his mind. he would no longer interfere with the struggles of mortals, merely watch, and wait for the inevitable end.

now, dacaemis resides above the stars, waiting and watching. no one truly knows what he is anymore, save for olden tales shaded in darkness, and frayed by countless retellings. even dacaemis himself doesn't really know what he's waiting for, but he still waits nonetheless, spurred on by the addictive quality of watching worlds implode, collpase, and rebuild.

a news clipping appeared in front of his tired eyes, piquing their interest. he leaned closer, wings flaring out to stabilize him as he read on. ancient pictures reveal god? the headline read, eliciting a chuckle from dacaemis. "how close they are to the truth." he laughed to himself, eyes narrowing at the picture of a cave drawing. it seemed to be crude figures bowing to a winged figure. after a moment of scrutiny, he muttered to himself, "am i really that small?" shrugging off material insecurities, he batted away the clipping, which floated off into the void. he floated forward, closer to the sphere of swirling blue and white. he longed to go back down there, but he knew he could not risk it. if he got too attached, people might question him, and he'd have to start all over.
and he hated starting over. he'd done that too many times to count.
