I’ve been orphaned for as long as I can remember, and I’ve been in this forest
even longer.
I would love to write about my life story and such, and how tragic my past was;
perhaps like some of the other kits around here. Vengeful assassins, terrifying
monsters and urbanization are what I would expect. But truthfully, I don’t
remember my parents and don’t exactly care what they had in mind when they
abandoned a 6 year old in the forest. I’m fit, prepared and ready for whatever
comes in the future, not the past. But at the same time, it’s what I’m afraid of.
I only had to bear about one week in the forest until Miss Wish found me and
took me in. She’s a proper witch, but more importantly the most amazing
person I’ve ever met. She’s the reason why I write like a 6th grader with coffee,
why I love learning, and why my pollen allergy hasn’t killed me. But while the
other kits haven't had the same luck I had, they have had time to grow and go
out to face the world, I’ve been stuck inside, mainly staring at books, windows
and people thanks to said allergy flaring up in a flowery garden, in a flowery
forest. I’m not an introvert – social situations are exciting and meeting other
people in this world is the best thing since English. But I'll be lucky if I get to
spend more than 5 minutes with someone who isn't Wish - our garden is bigger
than our house.
However, wishful thinking with a side of angst isn’t why I got this book. I’m deaf
and not exactly skilled at pronunciation so Miss Wish is hoping this book will
clear up any issues with communication. And unfortunately it is not as enchanted
as I would like it to be. But these are the only worries I currently have, and any
others will be written down here, with spells and studies.
This book is owned by Miss Arcus, who wants a(n) enchanted prism.

What can a person do when they’re always alone? What does someone feel when they know they’ll never reach anything beyond their narrow scope of reality? What would such a person do?
Well, whatever the answers were, there was a time when she wanted them, quite desperately. Dreaming, sketching and reading had been enough to fill the few years before it all happened. This new house, a wooden mansion that had more secrets than any apprentice could know. This new family, with two sweet siblings and a parent in disguise. This new garden that didn’t make her feel like she was choking. Said things would’ve been the start of an amazing new life, if Miss Arcus had been able to access them. Or even wanted to.
The truth was that it was boring. Everything was boring for her. A spell that could let her explore the whole forest meant that she got to look at trees and flowers for a total of 20 minutes before returning to fall asleep from how tired she was. The garden was maintained, but always just a few tiers below perfect. The other kits were just kits in her opinion, good friends, but also people she wasn’t terribly interested in. Magic was simply a chore, being unpredictable and only good for its results.
That was why she wanted to leave, for somewhere else more interesting. It had been a quiet day, with her mentor collecting firewood and her sisters out playing. So being the witch in training that she was, she took her mentor’s advice and put it aside, taking a hodge-podge of items out of her hoard and stuffed them into a bag. Nobody would notice she was missing for at least 3 days thanks to such a large house, which was enough to get out of the forest into these things named ‘towns’. Maybe she could start a new life there – something always perfect with more interesting people to bond with.
She took to the woods by nightfall, lonely yet thrilled at the prospect of new things. The nightingales were chirping and the fireflies were aglow, and the gaps between the trees would perfectly capture the full moon beaming over her. It felt amazing, as she had taken her medicine and packed an extra week's supply. However, nothing would keep fatigue at bay and eventually the witch in training took a seat on the top of a hill, climbing up the nearest oak.
Arcus started digging through her bag, finding ingredients to continue a false trail of items in case anything (or anyone) had been trying to follow her. She felt proud as she pushed an old book aside - the only memory of her moving on from magic, as it contained all the spells she had known were predictable. As she shoved it aside, she found her paw slipping against a smooth glassy surface - a tiny ball. It shouldn't have been such a shock to find trinkets in her pile, but it seemed to be the most impeccable thing she'd felt, with no marks or imperfections on the surface.

After a few minutes of trying to pick it out pouring everything out the bag, the marble-like toy dropped out of the sack and fell a few feet away, starting to roll further and further from her camp. The kit dashed after it, in the awkward fashion that she did down hills. She managed to grasp it several times, yet the sphere would always escape her swipes, until the very bottom of the hill. Arcus planted a firm hold onto it, lifting it up against the moon as she tried to inspect it - to find something that she should have expected, yet never did.
Cynthia dropped the marble.
It was ironic. All the things that she had seen in the sphere were exactly the things she had seen in it before and dreamed of - perfection, a new start and something she could never reach. Arcus had seen every possibility she had thought of, all in their exact same form, but with a different tone. She saw how typical things turned out to be outside the forest, how everything was repeated in a way with no fun to it; she saw how ideas of perfection would change every time she achieved it and she knew this would render a new start almost useless.
It was her vision, yet slightly warped to become what reality could've given her.
She immediately bolted up the hill, fetching her bag and making sure everything she had left was still there, and sat down again.
She stood still and thought for a moment, on how lonely and bored she had been for her time at Wish's house, and realized there had to be a better way to change it. Maybe talk to the others a little more, and learn about their lives outside the house. Accept that magic was always going to be unpredictable, but that was what had made it such a popular art in the first place, for more than its results. Perhaps she would leave behind some possibilities, but there were ways to fix that. Just not in the perfect way. But first she would have to be better to her family, one that hadn't abandoned her but had allowed her to abandon them.
She picked up her bag and brought it back to the house, dumping it into the corner of her room and hearing a small rip. Lifting it up again, she saw a piece of glass in the shape of a triangle - jagged yet neat. Cynthia decided to investigate the shard, seeing if it had any magical properties. Maybe she could have that new world, but just slightly less perfect.
