i. you can be you - saint motel
faolan is a dotting father, he believes in briar, faults and all. he always
encourages briar to be himself, to feel comfortable with who he is.
ii. happy accidents - saint motel
briar's abandonment was a blessing in disguise, a happy accident, if yo
u will. he wouldn't have it any other way, faolan is the best friend and
father he could hope for, blood or not.
iii. puzzle pieces - saint motel
briar's favorite song, he feels like it describes him and faolan perfectly,
the way they're both social outcasts. they don't fit in anywhere else bu
t with each other, two hearts moving in tandem through thick and thin.

once upon a time, with a story like many others, our hero was abandon
ed with a hush of words, running like clumsy apology stumbling on its o
wn feet. the kit felt the cold wind ruffle his short hair, and the morning
condensation settle on his head. it was a confusing time, actually child
hood was just a confusing time in general, abandonment or not, he tho
ught. because you see, briar knew that there was always something dif
ferent about his parents, in every sense of the word. afterall, noxxsane
kalon would just up and leave their child in the middle of the forest. n
ot when there was a big bad wolf that roamed the parts and ate small
children - at least that's what he heard from his parents, which were t
he only people he was allowed to socialize with. before being dumped
like yesterday's garbage, briar lived fairly secluded from everyone. the
only time he would step out was to help sow the fields before the next
flood of water came and ruined their crops again. 'its that damn werew
olf wrecking havoc on our village again with his curse, margaret', he'd h
eard his mom mutter to his other mom. the thought of being outxxhere
with the big bad wolf was enough to make briar's chest rattle and a hig
h pitched scream to erupt from him, echoing among the trees and send
ing the crows in a frenzy. this went on for a few more moments, a delib
erating sense of sadness overtaking him. until he heard a branchxxxsnap,
and glanced up to meet the palest yellow eyes he'd ever seen, looking at him.

briar's relationship with faolan can't be described with a simple phrase.
to truly understand the two and their weird, funky, and out-there rela
tionship, you'd have to spend years living with them. they say 'i love y
ou' with hot cocoa and a talk near the fireplace every time one is feel
ing down. faolan says 'you're just like any son, blood or not' every time
he tells a stupid joke that should belong in merriam webster's entry of
the meaning 'dad joke'. while briar may be the younger one, by decad
es, he's most certainly the protector of the family. faolan is a pacifist i
n every sense of the world. in a way, he lets people walk all over him a
nd run their mouths about the horrible kalon and father he is. briar isn'
t tolerant of such comments, he has a short temper and blows up in th
eir faces. lots of screaming and crying ensues, it almost always ends wi
th the person apologizing or faolan dragging him away apologetically. b
riar would like to see his father stand up for himself once in a while. f
aolan's unfortunate circumstances have taught briar to be more underst
anding and compassionate with other kalons. before that, when he was
too young to understand why people shunned them, he was much bratt
ier. while it might not be obvious to briar, faolan is always looking out f
or him too. he always encourages briar to do what makes him happy. if
that means buying expensive paints to indulge in his artistic side, and t
hen paying for swimming lessons so he could 'feel what it was like for t
urtles' than so be it. he supports briar's endeavors every step of the way.

briar could hear faolan splashing along, a little further down the stream. he was chasing after a fish he saw, to show briar the different classifications found near them. briar, however, was more interested in relaxing in the water. he sat near the bank, his whole body submerged but his head. he felt the babbling water rush past him, drowning out the noise around him until he was left alone with his thoughts and his father.
he watched as faolan flounced around happily. there was something graceful and beautiful about the way he ran, and the way his laugh rang around the forest. this was the man he knew. the kalon who gave the funniest nicknames, the funnest facts, who called him his son, and the one to tucked him into bed every night since he was five.
not the vicious killer who townspeople described, not the kalon who tortured those who entered his forest and ruled it with an iron fist. briar saw a gentle soul who would never kill, not even the smallest of creatures. he insisted on kindness to be the way of life in their home, and to forgive those who have hurt them. if anything, briar was the more dangerous one of the two. he would fiercely defend his father, even when he was young and not that particularly strong.
faolan caught the carp, and held it gently between his mouth as he brought over the fish to show to briar. briar put out his paws and faolan left the carp splash about in briar's arm before letting it go. "fun fact, goldfish are just glorified carp.", added faolan. briar just gave a smile, he loved his father. fun facts, dad jokes and all.
