Workshop One - Writing Prompt

Prompt:
- Althea is a relatively mysterious "young" woman to most, and she likes to keep it that way. In truth, she's lived close to two and a half centuries and isn't quite as daft as she'll present herself to be. Althea was born with a power that some would call a gift, and others would call a mutation. This gift was that of a healing ability that comes with a cost, that of which drains her physically each time she uses it. Due to countless issues and trauma she's had with this ability and using it on others besides herself, she tends to keep it tucked away and uses it only when absolutely necessary on others, and even rarer on herself. Althea has lived this long because of her ability, but most of the time dislikes having to do so. She feels that she's cheating life itself, but can't help it. After all, no one really wants to die.
Althea has a good number of friends, but is careful when making close ones. She tends to be secretive to friends that aren't very close because she feels that caring too much could cause problems. Since she has the ability to heal others, she's very empathetic and open to anyone in pain; physical or emotional. But people have used this to hurt her in the past, and this has taught her to be guarded and hidden around others. Althea does have a few "best" friends, the closest ones to her, but rarely reveals her ability unless she feels the utmost respect and trust with another. She doesn't like lying about anything, so when asked about some sort of secret she's been keeping, she'll usually tell said friend a different true secret in order to get out of saying the one regarding her healing power.
On a daily basis, Althea runs a small cart around towns that sells lanterns and candles; some scented, some not. She's been doing this business since she was truly a teen centuries ago, and never quit doing it. However, due to modern times really changing, this doesn't support her very well. Therefore, she works as a part-time translator, which pays well. A dream of hers is to one day open her own candle and lantern shop, a real one in a building. But she knows that she can't do that until she really settles down to have a family and to live in one place, and to her, she isn't sure if that'll ever be real.

Workshop One - Day One Exercise

What is your Kalon’s first, middle, and last name (if they have one)?
I have first, middle, and last names for all my Kalons! It's one of the first things I do when I adopt a new one, aha!

- Calista's full name is Calista Elizabeth Hewitt!
- Miles's is Michael Oliver Marinus, he actually just goes by Miles as a shorter, catchier version of Michael.
- Simon is Simon Graham Powell. He really likes the name Graham, he went by it growing up but steadily got more used to Simon than the alternative.
- Kathryn is Kathryn Melody Daina. Her middle name ended up being quite appropriate for a choir teacher.
- Eleanor Rachel Lesage is her full name! She loves her name, but sometimes goes by Ellie when she finds it easier for the other person.
- James Jackson Cabil actually went by "JJ" plenty growing up. Actually, he despises the name Jackson because he feels it rubs him the wrong way somehow.
- Althea's full name is Althea Calliope Elwell. She discovered her last name after filing through a lot of old orphanage forms as an adult, and found Calliope was actually a Greek muse! She loves her name for sure. Little does she know that Althea is Greek for "one with healing power" but we won't tell her that one
- Peregrine Cornelius Feiler is the last little kit's name. He feels like his name is a bid wordy sometimes, but he likes the fullness of it and surprising people when he says it, haha!

Does your Kalon have a human appearance as well? If so, what do they look like?
Just gonna do one of these for now because I have hers down, and because wow I don't think I could do everyone for this one,,,

- Althea has a pretty pale complexion because at the time and location she grew up, there wasn't a lot of sunlight. She still burns in the sun too long, but her arms and shoulders are dotted with light freckles. Her hair style remains the same and she likes to wear light, flowy dresses outside when she can!

Does you Kalon have any family members? If so, blood related or adopted?
Again just gonna do one for now since I'm kinda crunched for time!

- Althea used to have family members, but due to the nature of her ability and giving her a longer life-span, she never knew them. She grew up in an Italian orphanage until she was twelve and hit the road to France, so she never found out and had no connection to them.

Who is your Kalon the closest too? Why?

- Althea is really close to a good friend of hers, Azrael! She really likes his personality and has found him very different from anyone else she's met in her very long time on Earth. Despite their rocky start where they met (they met at a protest rally where someone opened fire. While Althea was trying to heal the wounded, Azrael was taking care of the dead and they had a big argument regarding morals), she's seen that he's actually not a bad person despite their disagreements! He'll even take her flying sometimes and she's taken him to carnivals and things! I find the two really sweet <3

What sort of occupation does your Kalon have? Do they enjoy it?

- Althea works holding her own candle and lantern cart that she takes on the road and sells things on! It's a little wooden handmade cart that she remakes when something happens to it. She sells scented candles and oil lanterns, both of which she makes herself. They don't sell well a lot of the time, unfortunately, but she works as a translator on the side to support herself since she does speak French and Italian besides English, which helps!

List some of your Kalons likes and dislikes and give an explanation as to why.

- Althea really dislikes people that are pushy. She can't get past it, it's why she can't stand hearing commercials too much or being around people that are like it in general. It doesn't even take much to convince her, but when she feels forced into something, you can forget it. She'll never agree with you or do anything you want if she feels pressured into it. But Althea really loves light! She feels like it just gives off life and warmth, it's why she sells candles and lanterns! Even though lanterns are outdated, she still uses them all over her house, along with candles. She thinks they're more calming than artificial light.

What is your Kalons biggest weakness and strength?

- Althea's biggest weakness is that she's too empathetic, if such a thing exists? She tries to help people so much that it actually interferes with her own needs. Her healing power can only do so much before it drains too much of her own energy, but she'll often heal people in places to the point where she'll faint. She believes her biggest strength is her determination! She loves keeping up and to keep going, and she always feels defeated if she doesn't finish something. Therefore, she always finishes!

Workshop One - Day Two Exercise

Write about a time when your Kalon(s) lost something important or someone close to them:

"You can't possibly be going!"
"You want to bet? I'm done with work today, it's not worth some extra money to work any longer. I'm far too tired."
Althea had wrapped up the remainder of her work day, in a small, poorer town at France in 1796. Her quaint wooden cart that had been full of candles and lanterns that morning had dwindled down to just a few of each. It had been a productive day, but not without its walking and facing the weather. Lots of rain that day, and it had now practically dwindled into the night. The sun was beginning to set, and Althea got a small match she kept in her cart and lit a lantern. It was the one that hung from a string at the end of a handle on the cart, and trailed behind it to light her way. It was cute, in her mind anyway, and kept the night alive.
However, something was...oddly wrong that night. Everything was fine in the little village, seemingly. Maybe it had been the dark clouds out night that shrouded the moon, or that the village people were just a little too happy and calm. But then a single scream rang out, adding to more yells. A raid, an attack on the town. And its people were defenseless, just as she was.
Fear began to build quickly in her chest, heaving as she ran her cart to hide behind some barrels that hid behind a building. She concealed herself the best she could, but her glow and halo were ever visible in the night. Through the raid, she remained unharmed. When the smoke cleared and the noises stopped, she had come out to assess the damage. Althea was defeated, tears welling up in her eyes. There were plenty wounded, and buildings were slowly burning. So many was lost, so much taken.
Makeshift hospitals then filled up with the wounded, but there weren't enough people to keep up with them. The nurses didn't know they were going to be made to do this much. Althea went in, secretly using her ability on people when they were the only ones in the room. One in particular got to her, a mother of three that she had helped through a near fatal wound. She survived, but Althea's energy was beyond drained. Turning from the hospital bed, Althea saw a nurse in the hallway that had witnesses the whole thing, and had been shocked by what she saw. She ran, either out of fear or to help more, she would never find out.
Panicking, more found out of her ability and begged for her help. She tried to assist, but what could she do? She drove herself to exhaustion, and using her last bit of energy, she launched herself out of the makeshift wooden hospital. Althea propelled herself to her cart that was still hidden near the barrels, and tugged it. The little lantern on the end was still glowing, barely holding on and flickering away. She took it and ran out of the town, ran until her feet could no longer go and she nearly gave out, looking back at the faint town with the flames still burning from the other buildings. Althea wept, crying for the town she lost and the people with it.
She just couldn't do enough.

Workshop One - Day Three Exercise

Do they keep promises, or break them? Why?
- She definitely keeps her promises! It's one of the things she always does, and it's why she usually only makes them in dire or important situations. Althea always makes sure to deliver on what she says because she knows she would want others to do the same, and finds it honorable in herself.

Are they a leader, follower, or loner? Why?
- It depends for her situation. Most cases, she's a loner because she just tends to stay out of situations with leaders. But if no one else is fit to lead whatever the situation calls for, she will become a leader herself. Althea does like to be in control with certain things, so she definitely doesn't mind it when she does have to be a leader!

If they could change one thing in their past, what would it be and why?
- There are a lot of things Althea would change in her past if she could, but one thing would have been jumping off a bridge as a young child, at eleven for a dare. It is when she first discovered her ability to heal, but it wasn't worth it. She wished that she stayed a child for much longer than she really did, because she felt she grew up mentally way too quickly. Running away to another country at twelve was a lot of responsibility for someone, and looking back, she just wished she had stayed a playful innocent child for a few more years.

Do they care what others think of them? Why or why not?
- Althea does care what others think about her, to a point! If it's just regarding how she looks or the way she acts, she cares somewhat. But in the end, she really only cares about what she finds morally right and what she finds to be good in her own style, etc. If someone recommends something to her, she'll definitely listen, same with polite criticism! But as far as people truly influencing a lot of her decisions, it doesn't happen that much.

Do they tend to argue with others or do they avoid conflict?
- Althea typically stays out of conflict unless it really calls for it. She'll argue about the safety of others and other large arguments, but over petty things like someone being late or not paying for something, she'll just avoid the conflict and deal with it. However, if someone promised to do something for her and didn't do it, she'll silently note it and know they aren't truly honest. Still avoiding conflict, though.

Are they more spontaneous, or are they the type that always needs a plan?
- Oh man, Althea's definitely the one with a plan! Growing up as a young adult, she typically never knew what she was doing and just rolled with the punches, but she discovered that wasn't good for her at all. She didn't like not knowing what was going to happen in the end and it frightened her, such as running away to another country at twelve. So, now she makes sure to have a decently organized plan for everything. It gives her a sense of security.

Do they have any quirks, mannerisms, habits, or other defining characteristics?
- She swears that she'll only eat macarons that are truly French. She doesn't like any other thing made in America or otherwise and calls them "knock-offs".
- Althea really only likes to play the music she listens to on records, but if necessary, she will use newer technology to play her music. She's just really stuck in the past from growing up centuries ago, and doesn't understand certain technological advancements. But she does understand her iPod, and likes how easy it is to operate!
- She only writes in cursive! She feels like it's a dying art and loves how flowy and beautiful it is. She's perfected her neatness over all the time she's had to do it, and even attempts calligraphy when she has available tools!
- She definitely loves anything alive, even if it is a plant! Althea loves visiting gardens and other nature related things (i.e. parks) that are open to the public. She also loves brightly colored flowers and has plenty in her home. They're mostly the same species as flowers she's found in parks that she liked, and would pick up seeds on the way back that were the same so that she could have them with her at home.

Workshop One - Day Four Exercise

Write about them interacting with their favorite thing:

"There is no way you are going to win that thing."
"Oh, come on Althea, have a bit of faith in this angel."
"I have faith, faith that you're going to lose-"
Azrael had been waiting for this for a long time coming. This carnival had had the better of him thus far, those clowns especially. Just thinking about them sent a shiver down his spine, and Althea didn't need to know that they freaked him out. So he would win this not only to show that he could win to her, but to show that he was still good at other things. Just not interacting with clowns.
Azrael pitched the ball at the milk bottles, and they collided with a force that sent a shudder down Althea. He had knocked them all down all right, not one bottle remained standing. "Winner!" the host of the booth announced, ringing a bell to signify a win. 'Free Choice' was the deal of the booth if able to knock down all the bottles, so Azrael picked a very un-proportioned, large bear with button eyes and a red bow-tie. Looking at Althea, he smirked, and threw it at her. Althea had hardly been expecting that, and let out a small squeak as she tried to hold on to this ridiculously large item.
"For...me?"
"Well, I know I'm not going to use it...might as well give it to someone who cares."
He had shrugged and seemed uncaring about the whole thing, and so Althea looked at the bear with fondness. She rubbed her paw over the sleek button eyes, and could feel the beads within the bear that kept him stuffed. The bow-tie was a bit crooked, and she straightened it out. Althea felt herself give a warm smile while looking down at it, before looking back to Azrael. People had given her things before, but, this definitely seemed more genuine than those times. He seemed more genuine than anyone she had met before. And even though it really wasn't that big of a deal to him, to her, it meant nearly the world.
"Thank you, but I already have a gigantic teddy bear," Althea laughed, lightly nudging Azrael's shoulder. Yes, despite his very deep exterior, he was very alluring on the inside. Finding out so much about him and all of what he's been through has been such an experience for her, and he definitely was a big pushover when it came to her.
"Hey, don't get too confident, or I won't win you anything else."
"No, no! Wait, look at that booth, you could win at that, the one with the hammer! You're strong you know-"
The pair walked off to the rest of the carnival and the treasures it held, but when it all came to an end at home, Althea looked at that stuffed bear and was reminded of her real favorite thing. The most genuine person she had met in the centuries she had been alive, and the person that really meant the most to her.

Workshop Two - Writing Prompt

Prompt:
- Althea was born in 1773, and her parents were frightened of the power she displayed shortly after her birth. Knowing they couldn't ever properly take care of her, they placed her in the care of a proper orphanage in Italy. They filled out all the following paperwork, only wanting the best for their kit, despite leaving her there. Althea grew up there, outcasted because of her rare traits. She never knew of her ability until age eleven, jumping off a bridge as a dare in order to impress some other kits. She thought that if she did it, that maybe she would be accepted. She broke her leg, and cradled it in her paws, until her paws began to glow a bright yellow. Suddenly, the pain disappeared, and when she removed her paws from the wound, the moonlight showed her that the wound had just disappeared. The kits that had dared her had run down to see how she was, and saw the whole display of her power.
- Frightened, they ran off, and Althea couldn't stop them; no matter how she tried.
After that incident, Althea knew the nuns at the orphanage would think she was a monster, and would probably turn her over to the authorities. After all, that's what they always did; assuming witchcraft. She couldn't stand by, knowing her fate, and set off with her few belongings and a friend. Where to, they had no clue. They ended up in a small city in France after much walking, and Althea set up a small cart to help her get by. She learned how to make lanterns and candles on her own in Italy, and although they weren't the best, they did sell and keep her afloat. Over time, her craft only got better, and she sold more and more.
- However, all good things must come to an end. In her early 20s, her town was attacked in a vicious battle. The wounded filled the hospital, and Althea had been there to help the nurses. She saw a wounded mother of three, and she asked her to tell her kits that she loved them. Knowing this, she gave in, and used her healing ability. Althea knew that it weakened her, depending on the extent of the wound, but she did it anyway. She became weakened, but saved the mother. She called her "an angel, a miracle sent from the heavens", and left promptly; presumably to see her children. A nurse in the hallway saw her display, frightened, and ran off. Word spread in the hospital that she had healing power, and many begged for her help. She healed as many as she could, until she was to the point of fainting, and could no longer look at the wounded. She took her cart, and with the strength she had left, ran off. Althea ended up in the town of Toulouse after all of her walking, and decided it would be a good place to settle down.

Where do they live and what is the geography like?
- Althea tends to move around a lot due to her very flexible line of work, but her main residence is in Toulouse, which is in France! It's a rather urban city with a lot of rich history that Althea appreciates.
What is the society like there, is there a hierarchy?
- There is not a hierarchy! It's a pretty normal city in France, very upbeat and modern, so there is no present hierarchy. There is a mayor, but other than that, there's nothing out of the ordinary.
What kind of technology does the world possess: modern, medieval, fantasy, etc.?
- Modern technology! Althea tends not to use too much of it since she finds it hard to use, but she'll use some tech if necessary.
Do many or only a few people live here?
- Many people live there! It's a very populated area, but Althea's home is near the less-populated part of the city. She finds it more relaxing to live there than at the heart of the city.
Is the history the same as our world, or is it different? If different, how?
- It's pretty much the same; just with Kalons, aha! Every historical event that ever happened in France (and in Toulouse) has happened there as well.
Is your Kalon(s) considered lower, middle, or upper class?
- She's considered somewhat upper middle class! She's accumulated some wealth over her long time of being alive, and her translating job pays pretty well.
What sort of language(s) is commonly spoken here?
- Mostly French! Althea can speak French and Italian fluently though, so if there happens to be any Italians that are in the city, she'll often make conversation with them in their language and offers to help tourists.

Workshop Two - Day Two Exercise

Story Behind their Name:
- Althea's name, in Greek, means "with healing power". Her parents, before putting her in an orphanage as an infant in 1773, actually knew of her powerful potential. Even though Althea only found out about her healing ability at age eleven, her parents knew of it long before she did, because she had healed her mother unknowingly after giving birth to her. The doctor's called it a literal "miracle", but her parents were not so sure. They were afraid she would have been born with something off about her, since in her family tree, her grandparents also had a legendary trait. Because of fear of strong powers that were easily considered something frightened enough to kill, her parents felt she would be better off in the hands of others, and surrounded by more normal children than herself.
Although they did it out of love, Althea was completely unaware of this growing up. Being a relatively outcasted child because of her odd halo and glow [rare traits were even rarer back in 1784], as a little child, she couldn't have cared less about the meaning of her name. Althea actually only ended up finding out about her name meaning when she was in her early twenties and found old applications that her parents had to fill out for putting her in the orphanage, and her parents put what her name meant in the "Additional Notes" section. Specifically, they said, "Her name means 'with healing power'. It does not mean much, but if something is to happen that is out of the ordinary with her, please remember this". Knowing her parents knew of her ability this whole time really shook her, but she ended up liking her name a lot more knowing her parents actually put thought into it.

How many different places have they lived:
- Definitely several! She's moved plenty in her lifetime.
Why did they settle down where they are currently:
- She grew up in France for the longest time and loved it! She wouldn't think of living anywhere else to settle down.
Is there an ideal place they want to live, or are they already there:
- Althea is already in her ideal place to live. She loves France, and Toulouse!
What are the biggest moments that have defined their life:
- Probably running away from her orphanage in Italy to France! It was a very long and large part in her life that defined the way she lived.
Does their future have a bright or darker outlook, and can they change it:
- She's extremely optimistic! She has a very bright look on life despite all she's been through, and loves others that have the same lookout.
