workshop one - writing prompt

prompt: cali is a very snooty kid. she's the type that loves herself just a bit too much, and she expects everyone around her to appreciate her as well. while she can get a little insecure about a few things (like her overly large nose), cali is generally very confident with herself. she's also pretty smart for a ten year old, which only boosts her ego. cal is used to excelling in everything she does as well, and she has extremely high standards for herself. cali gets super irritated when things won't go perfectly, because when she doesn't do her best, then what's the point? she honestly just wants to always do her best, being the little tryhard she is, and has a lot of faith in her own actions.

what is your kalon’s first, middle, and last name (if they have one)?
castor reagan prusa

does your kalon have a human appearance as well? if so, what do they look like?
i haven't drawn it yet, but yes ! she's about 5'1, and has a slightly lean body. she has very dark skin, and like in her feral form, she still has her extremely long black hair which she keeps in front of her eyes. castor has a large, rounded nose, and has fairly decent posture, as she carries herself with confidence. cas is usually the type to wear hoodies and t shirts, but will sometimes wear skirts too. cas is pretty okay with her looks, but she detests the fact that she has relatively large feet.

does you kalon have any family members? if so, blood related or adopted?
cas has her twin brother pollux, and after their mother died, they were adopted by my babe dove.

who is your kalon the closest too? why?
polly is pretty much one of the only people who can break through castor's hard emotional shell. while dove is also very close to her, polly and cas have that sort of "twin connection". they can manage on their own, but they're usually connected at the hip. cas has known polly for her whole life (well, almost. she was born a minute before him), and she'll do almost anything for her brother.

what sort of occupation does your kalon have? do they enjoy it?
cas is twelve, so she's still in school, not getting very good grades, and she's miserable.

list some of your kalons likes and dislikes and give an explanation as to why.
likes:
cas loves the rain. her eyes are super sensitive, and the fact that it usually gets cloudy or foggy when raining is a relief. castor also really enjoys jumping in puddles when it's raining as well.
another thing cas likes is flowers. she usually doesn't really like being seen as "girly", but she loves how fresh they smell, their beauty, and just everything about 'em! flowers are her weakness, but the only thing she likes more than flowers themselves are flower crowns. she and pollux frequently make flower crowns (usually matching ones), and it's one of the only things that can help calm cas down when she's super angry.
what cas dislikes, however, is schoolwork. she isn't very school smart, and too much work really stresses her out. cas is better at doing more creative things rather then using her brain.
castor also really doesn't like when others pick on polly. sure, he may be an easy target, as he's lanky and scrawny, but as cas is the muscle of the duo, she never lets things escalate. that also ties into her biggest dislike- detention. she constantly picks fights (usually over things being "unjust"), which often times leads her into getting in trouble.

what is your kalons biggest weakness and strength?
cas' biggest weakness is probably her troublemaking attitude combined with her stubbornness. she always believes that she's justified, and gets herself into sticky situations regularly. castor just frequently causes problems, which is her worst trait.
on the other hand, castor's biggest strength is probably also how stubborn and persistent she is. it can get out of hand quickly, but cas always stands up for what she believes in, and has absolutely no trouble speaking her mind.

write about a time when your kalon(s) lost something important or someone close to them:
cali sat on the edge of her bed, tightly grasping the locket that she held so close to her heart. the locket itself was still intact, shining slightly, but what was more important was missing. one of the only pictures of the young girl's grandmother had somehow slipped out of its spot.
she had absolutely no idea how it happened. cal's grandmother was one of the most important people in her life- she often watched cali before she passed. now, cal didn't have much memory of her grandmother, but she knew that despite how eccentric she was described to be, she was one of the kindest women she ever knew. she cared extremely deeply for her granddaughter.
so when she realized the picture was gone, she felt her whole body run cold. all of the few memories she had of her grandmother- her wild stories she used to tell, the way she'd sing cali off to sleep... the image of her grandmother in her glory days immortalized the memories, and now, they were lost.
cali threw the locket. as it hit the door, forming a crack in the side, she shut off the lights and cried herself to sleep.

do they keep promises, or break them? why?
cas is the type to always keep her promises. as someone who feels like she's been let down before, she tries her hardest to not fail those around her on the things they need the most. if you ask cas to promise to do something, there's a 99% chance she'll follow through. (the 1% is doing her homework. her thoughts on it? nah.)

are they a leader, follower, or loner? why?
castor is usually a leader. she likes being in charge and taking control over most situations she's thrust into, as most of her worst memories were due to things she had no control over.

if they could change one thing in their past, what would it be and why?
she would change the death of her mother. she died in a house fire, and it's the one thing that cas feels guilt for the most. she doesn't like talking about the incident, but she'd give anything to have her mom back.

do they care what others think of them? why or why not?
cas doesn't really care about how others think of her, as she has very little self confidence and believes that nobody likes her anyways, so why would she stress over it? (on another hand though, if anyone says anything about her twin brother pollux, cas will lose it.)

do they tend to argue with others or do they avoid conflict?
castor tries to avoid conflict, but spends a lot of time arguing. she's just an aggressive kid with a strong sense of "justice", so when she feels like something isn't morally correct, she'll fight for her way.

are they more spontaneous, or are they the type that always needs a plan?
cas is definitely very spontaneous. she doesn't feel the need to plan, and improvises almost everything she does. while her close friends have tries to push her to plan at least a little bit, castor has always been quick to do things without much thought.

do they have any quirks, mannerisms, habits, or other defining characteristics?
one of castor's major habits is that she likes to cover her eyes. they're super sensitive to light, so even if she doesn't have her bangs to cover them, she'll usually wear sunglasses. another thing cas does is that she fiddles with her hair. it's usually just twirling it around her finger, but it's a constant, as the kiddo has little to no attention span. doing something with her hands keeps cas on track, so messing with her hair is her go to thing.

write about them interacting with their favorite thing:
sometimes, venita regretted her decisions of running away from the noble life she was born into. other times, she loved the feeling of being free, being able to do what she wanted, to be on her own. but either way, ven had something that would always remind her of who she really was, regardless of her heritage or newfound life. her crown.
of course she took it with her. ven wanted to go out with a bit of a bang, so she figured she'd take her most valuable belonging. while it reminded her of home, it was funny seeing it out of its natural grandeur as well. it took her back to the days of everlasting summer, with the salty air, warm water, and life of immortalized luxury. but at the same time, it reminded her of her own control over things, and the cool nights spent snuggled under a blanket on her housemate's couch.
ven held the crown in front of her. maybe it was always good to pull it out every once in a while. putting it on, she smiled. it was almost a bittersweet sight, how contradictory it was that she longed for what binded her down. but having it for only a minute was too much of a risk. taking one last glance, venita stuck her crown back into its bag, and continued on.

prompt: rudy was always a happy kid, regardless of his situation. his parents didn't want him, so he was put up for adoption, and when he was about a year old, rudy was adopted by a very rich couple. they were the type that did care about their kids, but they also used them as status symbols. his father owns a large restaurant chain, and while this could probably lead into a lot of "destiny and fulfilling your role" mumbo jumbo, rudy doesn't have to deal with that due to his older adoptive brother. so rudy was always able to relax- he's never really had any pressure, and he's loaded anyways, so he's always been kind of a slacker. his grades were never too hot, but he was always surrounded by a bunch of other kids due to his outgoing qualities and clowning nature.
as you can probably tell, rudy's life hasn't really been too interesting. although, while he was a talkative kid, rudy has always been one to shut himself off from others. even from when he was little, while he'd chatter with others constantly, rudy has a hard time expressing his feelings to those outside his extremely close to him. it was a lot worse than it is now, but he never really let it show. rudy always felt like a disappointment regardless of how he didn't need to do much, and his parents usually paid a lot more attention to his brother than him. they cared for their younger son, of course, but he still felt lonely. it wasn't really their fault though, it was just rudy being overdramatic from the start.
all in all, rudy's life has been pretty darn good.

where do they live and what is the geography like? she lives on modern day long island, or somewhere extremely similar. to be more specific, she lives in a small yellow house alongside dove and her two kids: polly and cas ! it's in a small, relatively suburban area.
what is the society like there, is there a hierarchy? the society is nearly identical to ours, so not really, aside from the government stuff.
what kind of technology does the world possess: modern, medieval, fantasy, etc.? it possesses mostly modern technology, but magic exists there as well (in an extremely limited sense (ex. potions)).
do many or only a few people live here? it's closer to many ! the town she's in isn't overly populated, but it's not too small.
is the history the same as our world, or is it different? if different, how? the history is pretty much the same, except for the fact that wayyy back when pangea split, more small islands were created. also kingdoms are still more common in some areas ??? they ended up lasting longer there than here.
is your kalon(s) considered lower, middle, or upper class? she was in the upper class for most of her life, but now she's lower-middle class.
what sort of language(s) is commonly spoken here? in the area she lives in, it's mostly english and spanish. but as for the whole world, it's a parallel to ours.

story behind their name: dove's parents had her when they were extremely, deeply in love with each other (their marriage ended up falling through later), and as doves are seen as symbols of love and all of those frilly things, they thought it would be a cute, somewhat original name for their daughter. it was usual enough to keep their kid from getting bullied, but rare enough to not be bland.

as for why i picked it, THIS IS WHAT IT SOUNDS LIKE, WHEN THE DOVES CRY i'm just really into birds ??? my first kalon is based off of a bee hummingbird, and while i've never owned any birds, i'd love to have one someday. plus, i saw a mourning dove one time when i walked to school (which made my whole day), and that happened to be the day i tried out for my babe quq
also, i like prince, if that's any indicator.

how many different places have they lived:
he's kind of a wanderer, so he's lived almost everywhere. if you ask him about a place, he'll probably know it. but the only stable homes he's ever had are the apartment that he and his mother lived in when he was little (it was kind of shabby and in a bad area, but it holds a special place in his heart), and the other place is his current apartment, as he's been sticking to the same areas recently.
why did they settle down where they are currently: because it's cheap and in a busy area. palmer is a potions/miscellaneous knick-knacks seller, so being somewhere where he can easily be around people is key.
is there an ideal place they want to live, or are they already there: he claims that he loves where he is now, but truthfully, palmer would love to live in a small house in the countryside. he knows it's never going to happen, but he dreams of settling down somewhere quiet.
what are the biggest moments that have defined their life: the biggest moment that defined his life was when his mother died. she, uh, wasn't taken by natural causes, and palmer watched her life fade when he was a small child. it took most of his happiness and innocence away from him, which has in turn made him into the joking, unsympathetic, cunning person he is now.
does their future have a bright or darker outlook, and can they change it: his future doesn't really have a brighter or darker outlook. palmer could potentially change his fate at any time, but as of now, his future seems like it'll be exactly the same as his life is now. he's perfectly content with being a traveling merchant, and it appears that's all he's ever going to be.
