Workshop One - Writing Prompt

Kalon Name: Micah L. Koval
Link to Kalon: XX
Prompt:
Micah sports a unassuming appearance, spare his horns. But with his curly tail that is often reminiscent of more friendly creatures, and his light coloring, many wouldn't assume much. When they learn he's blind, the case is even more so - and that's when people begin to pity him.

Micah hates being pitied. Micah is not what others think he is, either. He is manipulative and makes good use of people's quick judgement of him, playing the act of a poor kalon who cannot make their way to jump at them just right at the right moment. That's right - Micah is a space bandit, and one with a mean streak to sport. He's the leader of his little group, and is organized enough to have eyes everywhere and is strict enough to have everyone under his wing. He's cruel when it comes to getting what he wants, and Micah is pretty greedy when it comes to a lot of things: money, goods, and good ships. He's cunning, and always watching, not literally, but with his ears and his nose and his touch. Sometimes, he bores sightless eyes into you and it's enough to give people chills.

Micah isn't all bad, though. There are times, when he rests, that he does not think of being cruel or stealing or beating his crew back into shape. He doesn't think of much of anything in those times - he meditates, at peace and merely just listening to the humming machinery around him and feels the cold of space. This was how he learned to live with being blind, something he has had from birth: that quiet, that peace, gave him a piece of kindness, enough to give him hope of being a better person in the future.

What is your Kalon’s first, middle, and last name (if they have one)?
Olina N. Koval

Does your Kalon have a human appearance as well? If so, what do they look like?
Olina is still a child, and tends to be rather short. She has short hair dyed a dark purple - it sits on her head rather plainly, and at times she pulls it up into a tight spiky ponytail. She has light skin and one sky blue eye and one gold, the latter which tends to stand out on her profile. She wears dark, near-black purple leather gloves and boots and a light blue sweater with simple white angel wings on the back. Olina also wears a small gold-pendant star choker necklace that matches her eye and is also reminiscent of her mother's necklace.

Does you Kalon have any family members? If so, blood related or adopted?
Her parents are the suspicious Micah and the kind Leah. Her brother is Zach; are all blood-related. In terms of personality, she takes a lot after Leah, constantly doing kind acts and accepting most everyone. It has inspired her to be more active in the community, volunteering to help at the ship cafeteria or running around the ship if someone needs a runner to deliver an item or drag a late worker into the command center to take up their post. However, she inevitably took a bit after Micah as well. They tend to be very standoffish but unassuming. In times of trouble, Olina takes up a similar exterior when she's feeling threatened, which can be at any time: maybe an adult is getting to pushy to do something she doesn't want, or another kid is doing something she doesn't like. During those times she's sharper, and it shows through a different kind of personality she has potential to grow into: a responsible leader.

Who is your Kalon the closest too? Why?
While Olina does spend plenty of time talking to others around the ship, she always squirrels away enough hours to spend time with her brother, Zach. She loves her parents, but she is ultimately closest to Zach, as it's always easier for her to relate to someone her age. She loves to see him open up and talk to him about all sorts of things. Sometimes, if she's lucky, she'll be able to hear one of Zach's songs from his guitar. As someone who loves to listen to music and finds comfort in talking to someone else, Zach helps her in a lot of areas.

What sort of occupation does your Kalon have? Do they enjoy it?
She's too young to have a occupation at her age, but currently she plays the role of a runner on their ship. She does enjoy having the opportunity to help the people around her. When she grows up, she wants to be a ship pilot in the way her dad, Micah, never could be being blind.

List some of your Kalons likes and dislikes and give an explanation as to why.
Likes:
Music - she's always loved to listen to what Zach has made.
Helping people - picks it up from her mother Leah
Bean bags - they're comfy and Olina likes to live comfortably
The shine of steel walls - It's in her kalon blood. Plus, after living on ships for so much of her life, it's grown on her.
The color purple - It's just a very rich color that she's come to appreciate.
the universe - it's so vast that it fills Olina's heart with wonder
the sun - She loves the warmth of it and how greatly it contrasts to the sterile cold of space and ships
fresh air - Space doesn't have much of that

Dislikes:
Slime space food - It's artificial. She thinks ships can afford to have real food.
Scream music or people that yell too loud - it echos off of the ship walls n she really dislikes loud sounds as it disrupts her 'inner pce'
Water/rain - She hates how it sticks to her fur and is so hard to get dry in space.
Outright bullies - In her opinion, it's one thing to be the kind of person her dad is and another to outright be 'mean'.

What is your Kalons biggest weakness and strength?
Her biggest strength is her ability to socialize and work with other people well. Both her parents taught her this in different ways, her mother kindly and her father curtly. From a young age, she has had opportunities to practice this 'skill' with her brother and all the people she helps around the ship as a runner.

Her biggest weakness might just be her fear of having the ship be attacked by pirates. This has happened in the past, and Micah just barely got away unscathed themself, but managed to get rid of them. She's worried that something like that will happen again - and it's very likely, considering the unstable nature of the solar system. This makes her nervous, and sometimes it shows through. In the future, it might just hinder her ability to be a pilot and to use the confidence she knows she has.

Workshop One - Day Two Exercise

Kalon Name: Radomir "Radon" Selan
Link to Kalon: Here
Write about a time when your Kalon(s) lost something important or someone close to them:
Radon's never lost-lost something, in the way that its physically gone forever. But he's lost his normalcy ever since his eye was attacked by a radioactive bug, and with it, his name - ever since that day he was no longer called his preferred name of Radomir or Mir, but Radon. The day the International Space Army radioed down to his home-planet of Nucleoris, requesting his help as a shielding specialist, he lost his family to traveling millions of miles across the universe. The day he met Micah, he felt like he lost a part of his sanity because to Radon, there was no one more calmly infuriating than Micah. And, some days, he loses his wrench or another important tool for his job and has to spend the day looking for it.

Radon feels like he loses too much. He's disorganized and his life has felt like a rollercoaster from the day he left Nucleoris, and many days he misses the busy, but predictable, day-to-day work on the shielding in people's home ships. As much as he hates green, he misses the glowing neon shade of his home because it's the color that's linked to the memories of his family, his few friends, and his childhood. He also wishes that Micah wouldn't be such a liar, hiding behind the excuse that they're blind. Overall, he wants to get back to work, but he can't find his damn wrench.

Radon wishes he hasn't lost a lot of things. He doesn't like that he wishes, and just gets grumpy about the entire thing instead. And then there's whispering words in the back of his head that's too wishy-washy for Radon to say out loud, but -

He's discovered a whole lot of things on his journey across the universe, too. He's both glad and a better person for those things.

Radon would say that counts for a whole lot of something.

Workshop One - Day Three Exercise

Kalon Name: Raymond K. Scheider

Link to Kalon: XX

Do they keep promises, or break them? Why?
Raymond is, in most cases, more likely to break them. That's because any promises he makes in the first place are made mostly made on lies. Raymond is too iffy a kalon and too quickly changes his mind to follow many things through, and in many cases he's not motivated enough to follow through.

Are they a leader, follower, or loner? Why?
Raymond's definitely not a leader; he's not decisive enough nor nearly as inspiring as he should be. He doesn't follow orders that well either, and tends to do his own thing or not do anything at all. Because of that, he's a loner. He works alone, takes requests alone, and does things at his own pace. It's not very efficient at times, but it is what Raymond is comfortable with, and with the kind of detective skills he has, people are patient enough.

If they could change one thing in their past, what would it be and why?
Raymond doesn't really regret it as much as he should, but sometimes, he wishes he could wipe away all the mistakes he's made. All the things he's stolen on impulse, all of the contracts he's failed to fulfill - if he goes far back enough, all the times that when group projects happened in school, he never helped. Especially all of the stealing; he's never done anything worse than steal, but a detective shouldn't be making their own cases, should they?

Do they care what others think of them? Why or why not?
Sometimes, he manages to convince himself that he doesn't. He messes up at so many things, makes so many wrong choices, runs over so many people's feelings and frustrates them very easily when he doesn't do anything. There's so many bad things that people have to think of him that he thinks he should be used to it.

Raymond isn't used to it. You can't get past your problems that easily. It's something that stings him every time he thinks of it, but it's also something he can't dredge up in himself to fix.

Do they tend to argue with others or do they avoid conflict?
They avoid conflict. Raymond isn't much of an arguer - if someone gets on his case for something, he'd rather ignore them. Of course, ignoring people tends to fuel the anger of the other person, so sometimes he'll just run away and find an excuse to leave. Raymond's all about excuses, and while avoiding some arguments can be beneficial, it more than often leaves problems hanging in the air waiting to be solved.

Are they more spontaneous, or are they the type that always needs a plan?
They are spontaneous in the way that they come up with a plan on the spot. Raymond, for all of his deliberating, is a bit of a genius, and the moment he comes up with something, he's quick to execute it and wrap up his criminal case. His spontaneity comes hand-in-hand with his impulsive nature when it comes to stealing and other bad ideas, so it's not all good genius.

Do they have any quirks, mannerisms, habits, or other defining characteristics?
Some quirks of Raymond might be the way he fidgets in place, periodically checks his nails/claws, cleaning out excess dirt, and tends to bite down on his tongue or lips when he can't solve a problem or clench his teeth (the pain gives something for him to focus on). His hair always gets in his eyes, so he's constantly brushing it back or trying to blow it out of his face, which is something that fails at every time. Raymond is a bit messy when he eats, and sometimes uses his bread or whatever other side he has on hand to scoop up rice or beans to eat rather than using his fork and knife. He tends to walk in circles when he's thinking, and stretches often to loosen his muscles.

Workshop One - Day Four Exercise

Kalon Name: Ragiel U. Rossello
Link to Kalon: XX
Write about them interacting with their favorite thing:
Ragiel absently messed with the buttons of his well-worn game controller, feeling the mesh of the keys under his fingers and listening to their soft clicks. His attention slowly shifted to the tennis ball next to him. His tongue lodged between his teeth, he put the controller down and picked up the fuzzy green ball. He then took it in hand and hit it into the ground, and it bounced up and against the wall - coming flying back to him. Ragiel caught the ball cleanly with his purple paw pad. He looked down at the controller again, and then chanced a look back at the TV that was stuck on a pause screen.

He dragged his tongue under the tops of his teeth. His heart shaped pupils constantly shifted between the ball and the controller. Both looked so fun. How was Ragiel supposed to pick one to play with? What did he like better?

Typical Ragiel didn't know what to do, so he picked up his controller, unpaused the game, and went right back into hacking away at dragons and undead with his greatsword. Then, with his other hand, he picked up the tennis ball, and threw it in the same manner he had earlier. Ragiel did not consider the possible consequences of multitasking.

It was just when Ragiel was caught up, intense, in a fight with a difficult boss, mashing at keys, that he threw the tennis ball in his other hand a little too hard. And, it's impressive, really - Ragiel sometimes wasn't aware of his own strength.

The tennis ball, somehow, went slamming right into the TV he was playing on, and it went toppling backwards. A wire snapped, and the game was dead. He'd broke the TV.

Ragiel sighed, staring at his mismatched hands, one purple, one dark turquoise. Now he had nothing to play with. Instead, he'd have to clean up this mess and wait, the TV wasn't really broken, was it?

Oh no, Ragiel thought, my parents are going to kill me.

Workshop Two - Writing Prompt

Kalon Name: Ragiel
Link to Kalon: XX
Prompt:
Ragiel was born into a dysfunctional family as a dysfunctional child, and proceeded to lead a dysfunctional life.
His parents were not married - rather, his father had been married to another woman, but cheated on her for his mother, and accidentally got her pregnant. They didn't love each other, nor did they hardly get along together, but with a child coming his father divorced his wife, whom they had no children, and was forced to instead marry his mother. It was something of obligation that could never end well.

When he was born, things did not improve in his parent's relationship. If anything, it got worse. His mother and father, individually, were caring at times - especially his mother, who was a good person having never intended this situation. His father was more harsh, and was often the one to start the arguments - over him, over groceries, over this and that about her. It never ended well, but it was was it was. He loved best the moments when only his mother was with him, and they could have some peace. But even then, she'd get upset and start worrying over his father pointlessly, shattering any moment they could have had.

It was his childhood, hearing yelling in the halls and hiding in corners. His parents both took to work to get away from each other, and he was often lodged in day care - and the caretakers at day care were often too busy to spend time on one child. So he never received much affection and only learned from the children around him, and they were hardly role models at all - only teaching him how to play and be a child. But he was a child without affection, and did not know how to comfort, how to heal, how to be kind and what manners to use. He grew up rowdy, playful, yearning for attention and yet not asking for any at all. As he grew older, his lack of emotions stood clear when his few friends needed comfort, and he couldn't give it.

In the high schooling levels, he struggled, for his parents rarely provided much motivation for him to work hard and get good grades. They were too caught up in their own problems, only making sure that he was there at home, day to day, and fed and watered. His parents, in 8th grade, finally divorced and his father left them just to his mother and him. But by then, the damage was done, and the habits that were ingrained in him were too deep to break away from.

His high school years were peaceful, more normal. But Ragiel would never quite apply to the standards of normal and well-raised in his life.

Workshop Two - Day One Exercise
Kalon Name: Micah & Radon
Link to Kalon: XX & XX

Where do they live and what is the geography like?
Radon was born on the planet Nucleoris, one of the most radioactive planets in the universe. There are many glowing green pools of water that leak wisps of radioactive smoke and vapor that on some days make the sky a cloudy green. The only light seems to be this green light, and the sky is almost always dark and grey, but it rarely rains, and when it does, it is vicious, windy, acidic and deadly, with storms as powerful as one you would find on a gas planet. No ships move during this time. The ground is either black, 'volcanic' rock, and it forms rocky spires but few mountains. Sometimes, there is gravel, or lighter grays, but they come in few patches, far and between. In some places, there are deep canyons that cut 'reverse' mountains into the ground - these were formed over thousands of years as radioactive and acidic water burned away the rock. These are said to be full of dangerous, mutated creatures in many of the connecting cave networks.

Micah was born on a rickety ship that was stopped for the day at the Commercial Intergalactic Health Hub, which is located on a small moon of Lestoris, a highly technologically advanced planet. The Universe they live in is spotted with planets full of all kinds of cultures and geographies, but all are connected to the Universe beyond them. Because of this, there are many hubs on moons, asteroids, and smaller planets to work as pit stops, shopping malls and resting areas for the travelers of the galaxies. The Universe is full of many asteroids and comets - some comets even have societies living on them - along with many suns, stars, planets, and moons. Some places are floating ship junkyards, and some planets or even solar systems are merely floating space debris and rubble after their star died. Many ships, from well-off, technologically advanced ships built in Lestoris and made for the Universal Space Army to small, old things that had been running for a hundred years on oil and bones. These ships can make up entire cities, floating in space, and many live a nomadic life upon them.

What is the society like there, is there a hierarchy?
Nuclerois has little hierarchy. The planet itself is unforgiving, so the people and kalons that live there must work well together to survive. Living in many little ships spotted along the planets surface, and with very few daring to live longer than a day in the outside world spare the insane, communication can be difficult, and leaders are disregarded. With this kind of hierarchy, anyone has the opportunity to lead so long as they speak up and take action. All the same, no one is considered "peasants" or "nobles": it all depends on the role you take up in the community and how well you are acknowledged. However, gaps in wealth do still remain.

Each planet in the Universe has its own unique hierarchy. Some have monarchies, some democratic, and some are simply like Nuclerois, with no organization but still peaceful; that, or they have no organization and are constantly at war. The Universe itself has an intergalactic contract that states everyone should acknowledge the Universal Space Army, but they do not have reach over the entire Universe, rather, merely scattered sections, more concentrated near it's fringes. These areas are suppressed of space bandits, but beyond the Army's reach, whoever has the best tech and the biggest weapons rules the skies. In some places, entire galaxies are at the mercies of pirates who happen to be much more technologically advanced than the planets they steal from. However, such organizations tend to be eventually broken up by the Universal Space Army once they catch wind of it. Additionally, some individual planets tend to have stronger sway over the Universe's government, such as Lestoris and other strong, good-tech or good-government planets that keep foothold in the Army forces.

What kind of technology does the world possess: modern, medieval, fantasy, etc.?
Technology ranges from what we have today in terms of ships to highly advanced ships that can travel at the speed of light. A few planets still rely on bow and arrow or sword and shield, but many possess some level of gun technology along with flying tech. Lasers, artificially made food and anti-gravity tech is all commonplace throughout much of the Universe.

Nucleoris itself tends to be on the higher range of technology, with some fairly up-to-date tech. When Radon was born, this was not quite so until he began upgrading the tech himself.

Do many or only a few people live here?
On Nucleoris, the population is fairly small, merely only several million. However, the amount of people in the entire Universe span the billions, and into a trillion.

Is the history the same as our world, or is it different? If different, how?
Nucleoris was first settled by retired space pirates, wanted and looking for a place to hide away until the end of their days. They had been tired of traveling, and wishing to rest in a place that no one would ever find them. They were quick to realize that the atmosphere was deadly if exposed to for too long and the animals and plants were, unless heavily modified and decontaminated, not suitable for food. They helped develop the artificial slime-food that many residents of Nucleoris eat today.
The pirates were eventually found by the people they wronged, which was a large amount of people. The pirates sabotaged their ships so they could not leave. They ran into the caves, presumed dead, but the kalons left in the ships were forced to learn to survive there. Eventually, they fixed their ships, but in the end chose to stay and make Nucleoris their home. More rapidly than most planets, their technology level improved as the population slowly rose, and some began to migrate there in search of a quiet place to live.

The Universe itself was not always so well connected. It is said that the first discoverers of space technology and pioneers of the universe were part of a now rather small group that lives at unknown fringes and unknown center of the universe, constantly discovering more - they are called the Zeonirs. They come from the planet Zeon, from a solar system that had its star die long ago. The aliens of Zeon had a special trait that let them share knowledge with others. This made it so the ingenious aliens of Zeon could communicate with other smart aliens to quickly form plans and build technology, but also share this with those less gifted so as to quickly build upon their knowledge with the entirety of their race. Since their birth and discovery of their power, the Zeon race went from newborn to creating ships and the first space technology in a few decades. Their planet was also rich in minerals and rocks highly useful for circuity and the outside of their ships; however, there is little foliage or food, leaving it to the Zeonirs to be able to leave the planet one day to gather it.

When the Zeonirs left their planet in sweeping hordes, they brought to their neighbors technology and gifted them with the knowledge they needed to build it themselves. They went farther and farther, across the entire Universe to give their gift, and after that, the people from hundreds of planets came together to form the massive trade network and alliance they had today. With all of them bearing the same knowledge from the same source, many planets agreed to work together to obtain more knowledge rather than fighting, as they were all equals at hand.

As the thousands of years passed, however, the gap between the wealth of planets slowly grew. Wars broke out as some planets took on imperialistic tendencies, forcing the lower class to rebel against them. This was when forces such as the Universal Space Army came into being, along with a universal space government compromised of many significant planets. Bandits existed only a thousand years after the beginning of the international relations among planets, some people merely driven by greed for more. Of course, over the thousands of years as the gap in wealth grew, more and more bandits came together to form entire organizations that threatened, just like the imperialistic and rebel planets, the peace of the Universe.

Is your Kalon(s) considered lower, middle, or upper class?
Radon is considered to be middle class. They did not live in riches, but nor in depravity, and instead sit a fairly comfortable line at home. Many residents of Nucleoris tend to be middle class, with a select few with older or newer ships.

Micah was born lower class, a lowly resident of the Universe traveling on a old ship from planet to planet in search of a life to call his own. Over time, though, he grew up the social ladder among bandits, coming something close to an 'upper' class among them.

What sort of language(s) is commonly spoken here?
Hundreds of languages are spoken across the Universe, endlessly diverse and impossible to learn them all. Because of this, any planet in contact with the rest of the Universe is taught the Common Intergalactic Tongue, a simple and easy to learn language that originates from the Zeonirs themselves.

Workshop Two - Day Two Exercise

Kalon Name: Radon & Ragiel
Link to Kalon: XX & XX
Story Behind their Name:
Radon's real name is Radomir Selan, his last name coming from his father and his first, a dignified name reminiscent of planets not their own. Radon's father was not from Nucleoris: he was from a planet on the other side of the solar system, a small but dignified and rich trade hub with people that bore names not so unlike Radomir. Radon's mother had traveled to that trade hub, named Filorius, to exchange for goods she could not gain at Nucleoris. His father fell in love with her over the course of her many trips, and chose to come live in Nucleoris with her. He was the one who orchestrated the naming of Radomir primarily.
However, when Radon had lingered into an unprotected zone and was attacked by a radioactive bug to his eye, earning his glowing right eye, people began to shorten his name to Radon, for the radiation he carried.

Ragiel's name was, in another fantasy-universe, from goblins, a horrid species akin to how he was born, from a twisted love potion gone wrong.
In today's world, in Las Vegas, it is merely a unique name his parents bestowed upon him. Some people may think it sounds like "Bagel", hence his nickname.

Workshop Two - Day Three Exercise

Kalon Name: Izaari bin Najiyya

Link to Kalon: XX

How many different places have they lived:
Izaari was born in Malaysia, at Teluk Duyung, Penang. There, Izaari loved to wander the coasts and marvel at the beautiful forests and water. However, when he was young, his family frequently moved around the country as they struggled with getting a stable job, tending to jump from one occupation to the next. He ended up living in the Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia's most populous city, while his parents worked at bustling businesses, and Malacca City, with them working at hotels. At one point, Izaari's father got a job that required them to travel even more, resulting in them living in Singapore, Indonesia (Java and Bali), and the Philippines. Eventually, his parents returned to Penang, having exhausted opportunity and finally settling for a more simple job.

When Izaari grew up, he came to live in Australia, Japan, China, New Guinea and India. He traveled to these places in the course of a few years, shortly after he left his parents. He wanted to see more worlds outside of the smaller sphere of Malaysia and Indonesia, and at the same time investigate the coral & fish life in the seas of the area and see how well his craft goods would sell in the streets.

Why did they settle down where they are currently:
For now, Izaari has settled back at his home country, but in Malacca City. Izaari found that the city was busy and cultured enough for him to sell his crafts, and also close enough to the sea for him to have the opportunity to head out and snorkel or scuba dive. He has been considering settling at Australia, for the Great Barrier Reef, but Izaari doesn't know English well enough yet, and is in the process of brushing up on it before he travels there for a long time.

Is there an ideal place they want to live, or are they already there:
Australia, because of the Great Barrier Reef which offers boundless opportunities for watching sea life as well as plenty of tourism to fuel his craft business. However, he still needs to get better at English before he can really move there.

What are the biggest moments that have defined their life:
The biggest moments that have defined Izaari's life would likely be when he first moved away from Penang and when he last left his family to travel for those first few years. When Izaari's parents left Penang, with beaches and forests that were special to his bones, he had cried to them not to leave, crying out why and clawing at the sand that was his home. When he first arrived in Kuala Lumpur, he was very upset and did not like the big city at all. However, over time, and as they left each home after the next, Izaari slowly learned to accept that good things cannot stay forever, and adaptation would have to be a key thing for him to learn.

The second time he chose to go leave his family and travel on his home defined him for the contrast it bore to the time of his parents 'moving'. For once, he took it upon himself to not settle with the land that was home, but to search for something more and learn more, and all at once become a better person. The experiences he had during those three years when he traveled were many and rich, teaching him invaluable lessons and showing him that there is beauty in many places.

Does their future have a bright or darker outlook, and can they change it:
Their future has potential to work, but will difficult to get to. Getting by in his life just by selling his crafts won't be enough - Izaari will have to take up part-time jobs aswell. If he ever wants to get to Australia, he'd need a better education in language. And, if Izaari would ever want to have a stable life, he'd need to get a good enough education to get a higher paying job, such as a marine biologist.
