"Hello," says a voice on your car radio, and you are shocked because you
didn't turn it on- you never listen to the radio. As you reach to turn it off,
the voice stops you. "No. No. Don't do that. You. Yes, you in the green BMW.
Don't turn that off. I can see you, you know. Both hands on the wheel now.
Drive safely."
All goes quiet again, and you tap your fingers on the steering wheel of your
green BMW nervously, listening to the white noise that has taken over the
man's or woman's voice on the radio. After a moment, there's a crackling
sound, more static, then the voice is back. You don't dare say anything.
"Oh, silly old me, lost signal there for a moment! You know how these
things go! Right! You're going to want to pull off at the next exit. I'm so
excited to inform you that you've reached your destination!"
You know you haven't reached your destination, but you follow the
instructions you're given as if it's second nature, pulling your car into a
small, dimly lit town with one main road. The rest, you note, are dirt.
You are not an expert at directions, but you know this is not where you
intended to be.
"Welcome to Ajo, Arizona! Population: steadily increasing! Elevation:
... I'm not really sure what elevation is."

this will be editted to be a much more comprehensive list of the lore surrounding ajo as soon as i have a chance
basically, ajo is a wonderland trope- very unrealistic and very strange, but it still makes sense. Just not that kind of sense.

- Wive's Tales often come true in Ajo (example: opening an umbrella indoors is bad luck, people go grey from doing bad things, picking up frogs will give you warts)
- The only actual restaurant in Ajo is a small Asian place attached to the gas station. The food is pretty great, but the fortune cookies come true.
- There is, however, a Wendy's. It's pretty notable because that's where most people have their mental breakdowns.
- Ajo is located right at the edge of the Grand Canyon.
- Inanimate objects in Ajo grow heavier with memories associated with them.
- Sunsets in Ajo are unusually long. Hours long, sometimes.
- It's always spring in Ajo, but very hot and dry. It rains occasionally, but it's not really rain.

"Can you not?!"
Characters: Amerigo Reis and Jerran Fontaine

“Can you not?!”

Such simple words for a man of Amerigo’s degree.

Jerran shrugs simply, taking Amerigo’s hand when the older man reaches out to take Jerran’s makeshift microphone (a pen) and laces their fingers together. Taking the pen won’t do anything. The damage is done. The person in the green BMW is already trapped in Ajo. Amerigo frowns. Jerran bats his eyelashes.

Amerigo continues to frown.

Jerran brings the man’s hand to his lips and kisses his knuckles, staring adoringly at him. “Cheri, don’t make that face. There are much better things to put on your lips than a frown.”

That makes Amerigo smile, and he draws Jerran closer, leaning down to kiss the shorter on the forehead.

“That’s a good start,” Jerran says, smiling warmly to himself and resting his forehead against Amerigo’s collarbone. Neither Amerigo nor Jerran had ever been terribly gentle people, but their relationship had always been just that, ever since they met. There was something warm between them that made Jerran think that maybe he had finally found the person he’d spent so long looking for- that, or maybe the colour of Amerigo’s eyes just reminded him of galaxies forming for a moment. And Jerran, he had completely torn down walls Amerigo hadn’t realised he had built in the first place.

Jerran, a static eldritch thing who came to him through the radio, had saved Amerigo’s life. At least, that was the way Amerigo saw it- he didn’t know what path he had been headed down when he had met Jerran, but it hadn’t been a good one. Jerran had brought him two things; a medically fascinating community that never seemed to run out of mysteries, and a new take on life, one more safe and more frighteningly happy. And that’s what runs through his head when he buries his face in Jerran’s wild lavender hair, mumbling so Jerran could barely hear him. “You’re my best friend, you know?”

“I better be,” Jerran replies, staying put a moment, then taking a step back and smiling as he taps the pen in his free hand against Amerigo’s lower lip. “Now stop being so sentimental. We have a new member of our little community- and something tells me they’re going to be here soon enough.”
