''now announcing, skater 47, miss Stella Starling!'
nervously, stella glided on her rollerskates across the smooth, almost gymnasium-like floor.
she was at the JEST, or the Junior Elite Skating Tournament. her bracket was small, only about
50 skaters. stella smoothed her hair and positioned herself at the beginning of the course.
her music started. it was a sweet melody, perhaps Beethoven.then again, she had no clue what
she was talking about and put the thought out of her head. stella began to gracefully glide around
several rows of cones. the judges looked pleased, and the crowd was nearly speechless. she took
this as a good sign.
twisting and turning, showing off her grapevine and t-stops, was where stella knew she needed to
be, not at alexander graham's birthday party. after the course, she arrived at a large, empty spot
on the floor. it was time for her freestyle. in the corwd, she saw her mother and coach. those were
the people she wanted to please, not those silly judges. (even though stella really did want to
make the judges happy, she'd never admit it. shes too nice!)
she began with a bow. then, she skated in a circle, spinning into a full dancer's turn. the crowd 'oohed'
and 'ahhed' at the sight before them. after that, she decided to do some quad tricks. skating on one foot,
she began to glide around and hop, switching from foot to foot. rolling on her heels, she skated sideways.
stella finished off with one more turn, then did a small hop. she landed gracefully on her toe stop.
the audience exploded.
breathless, stella looked around at all the cheering people in the stands. her eyes met with her mother's.
she was crying, which made stella cry, which made mrs. ophelia {her coach} cry. stella skated over to
her mom's front row seat and she embraced her in a huge bear hug.
"i'm so proud of you, my starling."
at the awards ceremony, stella stood in a group with about 49 other young women she didn't know.
sweaty, nervous, and anxious, stella nearly started to have a spasm episode when they got to her bracket.
'and in third place, miss lane! congratulations.'
she placed a bronze medal around her neck and had her stand on a pedestal to have her photo taken.
'and in second place, miss xavier! congratulations.'
another medal was placed around this girl's neck and she too stood on the pedestal.
'and last, but certainly not least, in first place...'
stella wiped a bead of sweat off her forehead.
'with a whopping 112 points...'
another one.
'is...'
she wiped a third.
'MISS STELLA STARLING!!'
oh. my. goodness.
she won! she had done it. she didn't let down her coach or mother and carried herself to victory. a large
gold trophy with a roller skate atop it was given to her. it was attached to a granite slab with her name engraved.

a little later...
'here's to the junior elite skating tournament champion, stella!' coach ophelia shouted.
'cheers!' they all said simultaneously.
'i couldn't be any more proud of you.' stella's mother gushed. a large vanilla milkshake arrived at their
restaurant table.
'congrats! your mom told me about the win, so have a milkshake on me!' the waiter said cheerfully.
'aww,' stella said, blushing. 'you're too sweet!'
