----Phoenixes, as I'm portraying, are swan-like birds of fire. They greatly resemble a swan's shape, though their tails are a bit more peacock-like. There are three main differences between male and female phoenixes; a male phoenix beak is short and parrot-like, while a female phoenix beak is long and swan-like, males tend to have shorter necks than females, but larger bodies and/or longer legs, and lastly, males tend to have more rectangular heads, while females have more rounded heads. Phoenixes have 3 types of feathers; Ignis feathers, Flight feathers, and down. Down and Flight feathers are already known in the bird world, but they work slightly different for phoenixes. Ignis feathers are what set phoenixes apart from other birds. They are alight with fire. Ignis feathers mainly consist around the head, back, tail, neck, and wings. When a phoenix hatches from its egg, unlike other birds, it comes out entirely dry. A phoenix chick's down is a light, creamy brown, and sometimes is rimmed with the color(s) it will become later. When a phoenix has hatched, it is called a hatchling. Hatchlings grow at the same rate as humans for 5 years, before their down starts falling out and their first fully-colored flight feathers start growing. Then, they are called a fledgling. Fledglings' aging time slows down to one phoenix year per every two human years. The fledgling stage is when they start learning the ways of the world and how to take care of themselves. In the middle of the fledgling stage, the aging process slows yet again to 1 phoenix year per every 3 human years. That's normally around the time they gain their first Ignis feathers and start mastering how to fly.
----There are four steps of learning in the fledgling stage; History and customs, Flight, Hunting, and the Decision. Each step is done one by one. The Decision is when the fledgling chooses to either learn about the art of battle, like nearly all of them do, or to leave and go become a Misticist. The Misticists are phoenixes that abandoned their parents and clans to learn deeper into history, to explore, to study the stars and nature, and learn more spells. Misticists are considered outcasts among the other phoenixes. The fledglings who decide to learn how to battle become known as Gradalings, and no matter what, after the Decision every phoenix's aging slows yet again to 1 phoenix year per every 5 human years.
---- There are four phoenix clans; the Bakara clan, the Sudu clan, the Gara clan, and the Aaena clan. The Bakara clan is the most aggressive, but the Gara clan has stronger and better trained warriors. The Aaena clan is the most independent and reserved. The Sudu clan is the most welcoming and kind, yet even they have strong limits. The phoenixes are rather battle-oriented, though most of them aren't necessarily 'cruel'. Most of them. The Bakara clan not only calls the Misticists outcasts, but also traitors. They're also harder to defeat, and they take longer to give mercy.
---- After Gradalings learn to battle, their aging process slows even further, to 1 phoenix year every 8 human years (I know, the aging system is very complex) and they become Rastlas, or adults. In the middle of adulthood, the aging process slows again (Ikr, what a surprise?) to 1 phoenix year per every 10 human years. The final stage is the Kreska stage, or the elder stage. Their aging slows to 1 phoenix year per every 20 human years. That's the slowest it can get.
---- Phoenixes can die from age, but it's after about 500 phoenix years. Most phoenixes die from battle wounds.
---- Phoenixes' feathers can be any shade of red, yellow, or orange. On a rare occasion, they can be pink or brown. On an extremely rare occasion, they can be blue. Phoenixes' eyes are usually any shade of amber. On a slightly rare occasion, they can be plain yellow or red. On an extremely rare occasion, they can be blue, pink, or purple. There's a 50/50 chance of a phoenix having a plume. A plume is 1-3 feathers that point straight upwards from the phoenix's head. Phoenixes with plumes are considered more attractive than those without, and are often given more respect.
Note: If there's anything I missed, or something else you want to know, please say so and I'll do my best to clarify.
